How Id And Bethesda Will Work Together

John Carmack speaks about how development processes will change now that the makers of Doom and Fallout are living under the same corporate roof.

Kotaku's Stephen Totilo flexed his journalistic muscle this morning with a first-out-of-the-gate interview with id Software's John Carmack and Todd Hollenshead about their company's just-announced acquisition by ZeniMax, the company that also owns Bethesda.

Immediately after the news hit, we started seeing speculation all over the place about how the two development studios will work together. And for good reason. With id leveraging its immense technological advantage and Bethesda bringing its open-world role-playing chops to the table, far-flung ideas like the next Fallout or Elder Scrolls game running on id's super-impressive-looking id tech 5--which already powers Rage--don't seem so terribly outlandish. Though they do seem terribly awesome.

Imagine a Fallout game with visuals like these. Enticing.
Imagine a Fallout game with visuals like these. Enticing.

Anyway, Totilo rightfully addressed the topic of what kind of beautiful music Bethesda and id might make together in his story.

And will there be any Bethesda-id crossover coming out of this? "The teams are very much separate," Carmack said. "There is a lot of mutual respect there. There's going to be a lot of communication and cross-pollination. I doubt there's going to be any technology shifts between the two companies, but there's certainly going to be cooperation. And I wouldn't be shocked to see some hints of different things crossing over in different ways. That's just the kind of stuff when you have lots of people who think everybody is working on cool stuff together."

Sounds like nobody's rushing into anything, though who knows what the future holds? These are two respected developers with what I feel are pretty different strengths, so any way they can collaborate together seems like a win-win for the consumer. Hollenshead feels the same way about the ZeniMax ownership; he had this to say about how the deal will affect the day-to-day business at id.

"Things aren't really going to be different in terms of what's going on at id," Hollenshead said. "We're not going to change the kinds of games we make…. It allows us to accelerate the growth of our internal studios, so we can focus on making all of our internal games as opposed to working with external partners where there has been a step down in quality… There will be more, better games from id. So if you're a fan of the company, then it is all upside and all things to look forward to."

That quote about "external partners" and a "step down in quality" seems like a pointed dig at studios like Splash Damage and Raven, which have respectively done Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, and both Quake 4 and the upcoming Wolfenstein under the id banner. But the guy seems to have a point. I'll be really curious to see how Doom 4 turns out, since it will probably be the first major id title to be developed almost entirely under the auspices of ZeniMax. Wolf and Rage will be published by Activision and EA, respectively, per existing agreements.

Id may not be the 800-pound gorilla it was in the mid-'90s, but this news still blew my mind this morning. Those guys have always had such a reputation of fierce independence, part of me thought they would never sell out, never submit to any degree of control by an outside party. I guess no company stays the same forever, though if all the details of this acquisition are as much on the up-and-up as they're purported to be, I'm hopeful id will at least remain a company that makes some pretty sweet games.

How does this news strike you? What was the first id game you played? Mine was the boxed shareware version of Doom, the original, which I bought in a Babbage's for maybe $5 and which went on to completely and utterly blow my young mind before quite literally changing my life in a nontrivial way. So I've always had and always will have a certain place in my heart for id.

My first id game was also the Shareware version of Doom which was installed on my very first PC with Windows 3.1.

Not sure if want.

Sure you could get Fallout 3 meets Rage, but you could also get Bethesdas incredibly ability to churn out very buggy games combined with id's preference for delays and useless tech upgrades (Who really needed 64 bit fire, honestly, delaying Doom 3 for that was the worst fucking idea ever)

I don't see this having a major impact on the kinds of games produced by either company, but if it did I can only see it being a positive thing - id could do with some of the world-building and story depth that Bethesda crams into their games, and Bethesda could seriously use a hand tightening up their action sequences and combat systems. Seems like that would be a good trade in experience on both parts.

This is kinda funny since when I was about 10,
I was knee-deep (in the dead) in id games; Wolfenstein and Doom 1/2.
At 20 I spent countless hours with Morrowind and I've been
completely oblivious to id ever since.

Imagine ID's FPS knowledge applied to a Fallout game, or Bethesda's story talent added to a Doom game...oh, the possibilities.

Between this and the Mythic/Bioware deal, it's been a busy week around the developer communities.

I'm getting real sick of the Morrowind/Oblivion/Fallout 3 Engine.  I hope this changes things for the better.

First id game I played was probably Commander Keen: Keen Dreams. I played it at a cousins house before I had a 486 and got into getting my parents to buy me those dodgy 101-shareware-games-for-$5 CD's you used to get at supermarkets. Man, that takes me back...

This is a good thing. If there will be cooperation between the two companies we will be seeing subtle differences with animation, combat, dialogue, stories, etc.

@Oy: Indeed, the characters look pretty bad and stiff in Bethesda's engine. id might help change that for the better.

I can picture this being a win-win partnership for both studios.

My first id game was Wolfenstein 3D at a friend’s place. My first Bethesda game was a shareware copy to Elder Scrolls: Arena

Honestly? I'm surprised it hasn't happened yet. Blaming outside developers for the relative weakness of the recent installments/spin offs of their franchises is just another way of saying "Yeah, we didn't care enough to make the games completely ourselves, nor to make sure the product shipped was up to our customers' standards"
You guy's didn't even make the first 3D shooter for god's sake,
As much as I love the original Doom and Quake games, id has a tendancy to think that because they have been so big for so long, they get to do that. Glad they realzied that Quake 4 and Quake Wars were not the quality they need to put out, and hopefully they are more dedicated to making the games like they used to.
I'm also a little dissapointed at the lack of technical cross-over. I hope this isn't something id pushed for, because they should want to spread their expertise in that area to as many fans as possible. And let's face it, Bethesda really CAN'T make a gorgeous engine when they make games with so much content and stuff. It would simply be too much work. And all that has shown in their games. It's not really a bad thing, but better visuals would be AWESOME, as I really love the way their games look. Hopefully they will be more willing to share technologies and ideas in the future.

Fallout 4 is being made by Obsidian, not Bethesda. Obsidian is essentially ex-Black Isle guys, so sort of funny how that happened. "

seriously!? sweet. Bethesda sucks when it comes to story and character design. at least in terms of npcs. only good story elements of fallout 3 were the directly carried-over trends they borrowed from fallout 1 & 2. and they also rushed the shit outta the game. if they don't have the time and money, then they shouldn't bother. ex: ps3 version.

id Software is actually based here in Dallas, where I live. So I actually got to read about this acquisition, of all places, in the  Dallas Morning News.
I think it'd be interesting to see if any collaborations come from this.

My first ever game was Doom, I'm pleased to hear that something awesome, like Scrolls V or Fallout 4, could have something to do with id in the future.

@Death_Unicorn:

Yeah, there's been no formal announcement about any kind of Fallout 4, it's New Vegas that's being made by Obsidian.

Which means it will have a halfway decent story, but be buggy as fuck. the only balck isle people at Obsidian are artists/writers/etc, all the programmers and the key creative talant went elsewhere (Troika)

Still, I remain cautiously optimistic.

My first Id games was the original Doom.  I must've put about 30 hours into that game.  That was an hour per day, 5 days a week one summer.  Awesome, awesome experience.  My favorite Id game, Quake III Arena on the Dreamcast.  My friends and I used to frag each other with the shotgun while screaming GATLING GUN!!!!! It was just memorable.

I'm really anticipating Brink now given that Splash Damage is making it under the auspice of Bethesda.  Interests are now peaked.
