How PS Move and PixelJunk lifelike Make Beautiful Music Together

Actually, "beautiful" might be subjective, but Q-Games' next PSN title is definitely more synthesizer than game.

PixelJunk lifelike is hard enough to describe that I'm just going to let you watch this video demo we shot at E3 before I say anything else about it.

That's Kyoto DJ and Q-Games collaborator Baiyon using a PlayStation Move to layer sounds and apply digital effects to create his own improvised music. Sony wasn't letting showgoers play lifelike themselves, but from their description it sounds like you can hold down one of the buttons on the Move to access a specific set of samples, then flick the controller in different directions to trigger and loop the samples. Moving the controller around fluidly will let you put some effects like reverb and flange on those looped samples too.

The game's audience feature might be the best thing about it. You'll essentially be able to stage your own live performance on the PlayStation Network by opening up your game to other listeners who have the game. There weren't a lot of hard details on how exactly people will connect to your game or how many people will be able to listen in, but this sounds like a pretty ingenious way to share your creations with other people. (Q hasn't decided on specific saving and playback features yet.)

This is an unexpected departure for the PixelJunk series, which has been a little experimental up to now but generally conforms to familiar genres like tower defense and racing. Lifelike isn't even really a game--Q's big cheese Dylan Cuthbert told us before the demo not to expect much gameplay, which is a telling statement in itself--but it's an interesting addition to PSN that I bet some people will use to create some pretty neat stuff.

I think this will be one of thous "games" where you look at the time and go "Oh no I need to go...." or you'll quit it after five minuts.

I love (maybe even LOVE) PixelJunk, but this video and the others I've seen leave me at 0% convinced.

I find it weird how people haven't at least mentioned Beat Sketcher with this game.

I thought Beat Sketcher was good and this is a good compliment to that.

Nope, watched this when it was put up yesterday, and a second viewing today doesn't improve it any. Still looks frustrating to play, and sounds like a random mess. Give me Ableton, FL Studio, Reason, Logic, Garage Band, or whatever with a decent soft synth wobble bass plugin, and I'd have more fun. I guess I'm not the target audience, but I don't quite see who would be...

I heard or read somewhere (probably yesterday in the original post) that you could use a vocoder effect on your own voice, and it uses the headset mic for that. I think maybe that's what we're hearing near the end of this video.

Still not interesting me any...

I love Baiyon and especially enjoy his DJ sets. Can't wait to play around with this. I think people looking at this as a game aren't really getting the point. It's just more of a sound or music toy. Something to mess around with and try to make cool sounds.

Probably one of those games you have to experience for yourself to really understand.

When I saw the video at first I couldn't figure out exactly how it would work, other than swinging the Move controller around. Thanks for the explanation Brad.

'Interesting' (lol) choice for the next Pixel Junk title. It is not for me but I can imagine people really into their music getting something out of it. On another note the idea of an Ed Hardy bikini creeps me out.

I like that the potential is there. Hopefully they'll continue to support it and offer more samples and loops as it ages.

I think I'm going to invest in Move now!

Been a fan of Bayion ever since Pixeljunk Eden introduced me to him,

but then I always loved minimal techno and I personally use Reason to make similar music.

When i heard about this i imagined that it would be something like this video

But was more disappointed... i might be one of maybe 6 people that could appreciate this video, but i still think that using the kinect as a modulator is the coolest thing ever. he has another video that explains it... its really cool and has to do with his hand placement in the x,y, and z axis controlling different parts of the modulation process. then dropping a basic drum line under it.

@NorthSarge24: Holy crap man, make that 7 people then, 'cuz that video had me thinking if I had that setup, I'd be calling in sick at work after staying up 'till 4 AM wobbling bass, or theremin soloing, or whatever...

@umdesch4: i know right? i thought it was really cool! someone should make this into like a kinect fun labs thing or something similar. it would be awesome just to screw around in, especially if you have some kind of sound system.

It is like a theremin, which is cool in and of itself, but with modulation. actually. someone should just make a kinect theremin mod. because its a similar concept.

Do you know what I see here? I see a less offensive version of the game .detuned . If you've ever played it.... You know what I'm talking about.

EDIT : Scratch that. This isn't a game. It's a demoscene. And it should be advertised as such.

I don't know why I can't start a new topic, but I really want to hype this game in these Diablo III days... Maybe someone like me exists that doesn't have the specs to play Diablo, yet has a Move and wants to groove out to some sick beats! Yep, weird sentence, I'm danish...

Check this game out! ... (I hope it's good)

Still waiting for the EU PSN Store to update...

Yours sincerely

That psynesthetic kid, Lorbst.
