If Gears of War Was Developed in Japan, Dom Would Be A Lady

Get ready to read the words "Gears of War" in most stories written about "Quantum Theory" for the next 12 months or so.

With Tecmo still reeling from the loss of Team Ninja head Tomonobu Itagaki and the company's in-process tie-up with Koei, I wasn't quite sure what to expect out of the company here at Tokyo Game Show 2008. Would they just go bold and announce a new Ninja Gaiden or Dead or Alive, just to reassure the world that it's still business as usual?

Turns out a new Dead or Alive was announced, but it's going to be one of those weird fighting game MMOs that never seem to work out quite right and almost never make it into any English-speaking territories. But the company's other new game announcement, Quantum Theory, is probably one of the most exciting things to happen at this year's show.

Note that ESRB bit at the front of the trailer--that means that this trailer came out of Tecmo's US office and you can take that to mean that you'll see it hit North America as well as Japan.

Of course, it's just a trailer and a few screens, and there isn't too much additional information out there. Reports out of IGN confirm that it will be a third-person shooter that puts players into the role of a guy named Sid who holds a fairly massive gun. He'll be joined by a white-haired woman named Filena who, obviously, has a weapon that can morph into a gun or a sword, depending on the situation.

The trailer makes the game look like it will be based around the concept of taking cover behind stuff and shooting guys. Not to be all shallow, but I'd be lying if I said my first notes on the game simply read "J-Gears." It immediately reminded me of a more wild and Japanese take on Epic's popular third-person shooter. It'll be interesting to see if that's what Tecmo is going for with Quantum Theory, or if it's going to strike out in an entirely different direction. Either way, I'll be waiting to see and hear more about it. Jeff Gerstmann on Google+

so tecmo, does it have physics? if you know what i mean

Posted by The_Icon

LOL @ at the title. I can see the similarities with Gears of War in art direction...but........... I have to see more of cover play to make a decision.

Looks pretty cut-and-paste to me.

A Japenese Gears sound pretty awesome.

I don't want enemies made of glass. I want blood!

Ah, isn't this that game which was rumored to be a PS3 exclusive? is it still exclusive? If so, it could be that, they are trying to make Gears for PS3 or something.

But nevertheless, the game looks good :D

Looks cookie cutter.
Kinda lame.

a suped up, hyper stylized gears? sounds good, lets see how it turns out though.

Her breasts seemed very small by Tecmo standards. Guess the loss of Itagaki can be seen already.

Generic Gears of War is still Gears of War!  Bring it on!

It's like Devil may Cry and Gears of War at the same time. I have no idea what to think.

Posted by stephengotlost

Seems like a mix between Unreal Tournament III, Devil May Cry, and Gears of War

Looks pretty interesting, but since this is just a pre-rendered trailer, can't really say much about it except hope that it ends up as good as Gears of War.

Could be bad -could be epic- onlt itme will tell :D

I perosnally am hoping for it to be epic ^_^

May not look all that original but here's hoping to it being fun! That's all I'll care about...

Great blog title

That looks so amazing! I just want to see actual in-engine footage now. And just when i thought tecmo was losing it...

Also just as a side note, why am I being age gated if I'm signed in?

Posted by JamesKond

It looks silly, I´m just not feeling it, what is it a shooter running on a fighting game engine, it just doesn´t look good to me..

Posted by Cerza

It....looks....so...unimpressive....     Come on SONY! I want to buy a PS3. I really do! But I already own a 360 and with you loosing your exclusives and showing stuff like this, I just find less and less reason to purchase your system...

Umm.....this looks waaayyy to jap for me...

Hmm...

Posted by MasterSplinter

I don't know yet if I like the fact that it is a blatant attempt to copy Gears.

Posted by ArbitraryWater

J-Gears indeed. Also, the loss of itagaki is noticeable in the more realistic size of the female character's cleavage.

Gawd damn, I just got hit with a wave of japanese.

It's like if Ninja Gaiden and Gears of War had a baby.

The thing that made gears great was that it was a Sci-fi shooter grounded in reality whit real guns and not laser pistols and so on. This just looks like a stupid fantasy shooter where you jump up into the air and then shoot something for a couple of hours.

Posted by giyanks22

looks pretty good

i think this game looks great,  of course all the xbots will try and knock it though.

i hope this is on 360
i want!

Games like this makes me look back at my old consoles game library for some real fun. This kind of stuff is getting old... maybe not old, but too generic. Lets make another game with a human on a power suit doing amazing stuff. Or, lets just put a random outcasted guy on a city with supernatural powers. COuntless games.... it seems like all games must gave this dirty futiristic look. They all look the same. Sorry. Gears of wars 2 is coming this november... so I'll focus on that since after its real fun. Even thou flaots along the same formula, but like some one said it looks more real or has a rael feeling to it. Not taht I want games to be realistic.. cause no, but u guys get my drill.

Not really interested.  =  /

Posted by TwoOneFive

im sure it will be fun

Posted by oddjob

Silly Tecmo, didn't you get the memo? Space marines are lame now.

Posted by rateoforange

In what way does this game look amazing, or even good? Just looks like hyperadolescent cynical Japanese bunk.

Posted by Pierce

Looks like future weapons meets ancient demons.

Hmm.......

Hellgate London
Too Human

Fool me once ($50 for Hellgate London), shame on you.  I'm not gonna expect much outta this game...

(shoulda been the new Bond game, anyhow)

What in the slightest apart form the clolour palette and the fact that for 5 seconds the stand by a pillar - states this as a 'blatant gears rip off'?'

Posted by Shabran

the trailler looks intriguing......and considering tecmo have ninja gaiden under their belt the action could be very hectic indeed....but with a gun.....now im more excited

Posted by Charleslegrand

Not for me.  Besides, the hallway they were running in reminds me of the towers in Oblivion.  Got sick of those really fast...

Posted by Junpei

Slightly confused about how they worked together and then had a stand-off at the end, but somewhat interested otherwise. Course all I wan from Tecmo is a US date for Fatal Frame 4. Come on, it's already out in Japan... don't leave us hanging.

i've said that before lol

It looks flashy and stuff just what you expect from a Japanese developer but I seriously don't know how good Tecmo is in making a third-person shooter. It's an experiment for sure and very few of Tecmo's experiments have actually been successful especially those during the 90's.
