Indie Game: The Movie Trailer Likely to Make You Tear Up

Filmmaking duo also looking for financing as movie enters the home stretch.

I'm not a huge fan of the term "indie" because it forces developers into a stereotype, but I dare you to try and not fall head over heels in love with Indie Game: The Movie after watching its trailer. You may have seen filmmakers James Swirsky and Lisanne Pajot trudging around massive film equipment to places like PAX the past year or so, as they've put together Indie Game: The Movie.

Indie Game: The Movie follows Edmund McMillen and Tommy Refenes as they launch Super Meat Boy, Phil Fish showing Fez for the first time and the genesis of Jonathan Blow's Braid.

The film has been shot and edited, but in order to put that final coat of paint on--audio, color, mastering--Swirsky and Pajot are looking for a little help through a second Kickstarter campaign.

"So far, we’ve done everything ourselves on this project," reads the Kickstarter page, hoping to raise $35,000. "The producing, directing, cinematography, editing, and writing for the feature film and all the web videos we’ve made during the process. But, now we need some help from others and support to get the feature film done right and taken to the next level, technically-speaking."

Given the Kickstarter is already at $21,000 (as of this writing, anyway), it's probably not going to take very long before Indie Game: The Movie has everything it needs. I can't wait to see it myself.

Oh wow. I'm a bit of a film maker. When I get paid, consider some wedge pledged.

@Jethuty: I mean Braid is one of my favorite games, but I see where you're coming from too. That being said, these indie devs have dev cycles that are quite long and mostly silent until the tail end. He announced he had ideas/started developing something once Braid was released, but not much has been said from that camp since.

FYI: the 'um' in my username stands for University of Manitoba, and is the userid and email address they gave me back in '91. Obviously, I pledged! Can't wait to see this movie!

Given the self-determination and effort these talented guys put in, I'm happy to help in my little way. Looking forward to the final movie.

@Icemael: I mean, wouldn't you want to see this, knowing that there's at least a possibility that one of these guys will become the next one of those guys?

Also, donated. Can't wait to see it.

@johnLongview: No. The chance that one of these guys joins the ranks of those guys is practically nonexistent.

@MysteriousBob: I'd say that Braid being a fun and interesting puzzle game was why I started playing it, and was compelled to finish it. The story (as pretentious as the prose was that delivered it) was the reason I had my girlfriend watch the ending when I played through it a second time.

Also, I think that solo / small group nature of these teams leads to the personal nature of the games they make, and not the desire to "force artistic stuff" into them. David Jaffe has mentioned (as came up during the E3 Bombcasts) that God of War came from the stuff he was dealing with in his personal life. I think that because it's a team of one or five, not fifty, that the "personal-ness" of the result is much closer to the surface.

@Icemael: I guess I've seen enough "Making Of" featurettes on big-budget games, and don't feel like watching someone like Cliff talk about GoW, but that might just be because I'm not a big GoW fan. And I don't see him talking much about Jazz Jackrabbit.

That being said, I'd love to see a full-length doc on Miyamoto, since he always has such interesting inspirations that lead to his games.

The fact that Fez still isn't out yet worries me. I hope Phil can pull through and get it done this year.

Just saw the film at Sundance, and it was AMAZING. The film makers did a great job of being mostly objective, and there was a lot of great insight into Team Meat and Phil Phish. They shot most of the Team Meat footage before the release of SMB, and it was, for me, very emotional to see what they went through during crunch and launch day. The film is probably about 40% Team Meat, 40% Phil Phish, and 20% Jonathan Blow. I think tat's mostly because when they started filming, the story of Braid had cooled down a bit. I did laugh and cry; there are some pretty emotional moments that come off as genuine and not staged at all. HIGHLY recommend this movie to ANYONE. Being Sundance, there were a lot of non-gamers in the room, and when the credits rolled there was applause and cheering. Great film, and the film makers seem pretty cool and down to erf.

This is exactly what this trailer does.

It's hard to make a movie about a group of people without putting them into a group.

Wow.. how did I miss this article. That trailer was awesome... mostly I think due to the amazing music that was used. The cuts were amazing also... just enough time at each scene to make you feel the gravity of the moments.

I'm 40 minutes from Park City, and I've never been to Sundance. Would have been neat to see this. I'll have to wait, though. Oh well.
