Insomniac's New Property Will Be Multiplatform

New property, new console.

No Caption Provided
Insomniac Games announced this morning that it has inked a publishing deal with EA Partners for a new, unannounced franchise which is slated to hit the Xbox 360 and the PS3. This is sort of a big deal, one of those profound moments in videogame history. When this game launches--it doesn't have a ship date yet--it'll be the first time the studio has dropped a game on a platform not owned by Sony. They've racked up 16 years of exclusivity. That's crazy nowadays.

In a letter to Insomniac fans via Insomniac's official website, company CEO and founder Ted Price breaks the news in a friendlier way, promising quality with this new franchise that I--and I'm sure a couple of you--associate with Insomniac's other properties like Ratchet & Clank and Resistance.

"Today, we’re excited to announce that we have created a brand new universe and franchise for you to experience in the coming years," Price wrote. "As we develop it, one of our goals is to provide an awesome experience for as many players as possible. With that in mind, we’re working with EA Partners to bring this title to both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360."

In case you were wondering, this announcement doesn't mean the end of PlayStation exclusivity for Insomniac. In the same letter, Price says the relationship between the studio and hardware manufacturer is still good. "We know many of you are extremely loyal to the PlayStation family, and especially to Resistance and Ratchet & Clank. We are too. Our relationship with Sony Computer Entertainment is still very strong, and continues as we develop additional projects exclusively for PlayStation--projects that will take full advantage of our additional development time."

No Caption Provided
Sony talked with VG247 earlier this morning and it said much the same. “Sony Computer Entertainment and Insomniac Games will continue to build upon a strong, successful 14-year partnership that has led to more than 35 million games sold and enjoyed by fans around the world. We look forward to unveiling Insomniac’s next PS3 exclusive properties in the near future.”

I can see dudes getting angry over this because they feel like Insomniac owes it to them to stay tied to the PlayStation brand. I don't see a reason to be like that. A hip studio is making a game that can be played by an even bigger audience than it usually caters to. I think we should celebrate this and get pumped about this new franchise together -- because, at the end of the day, we're getting a new Insomniac game. What do you say?

Update: In an interview with Joystiq, Price says that this deal is simply for a game, not a franchise; however, it's plain that there is a hope to spin this property into a franchise. In the same chat, EA Partners global marketing VP Craig Rechenmacher adds: "... we're announcing a one-game deal, but our job is to make this first product a massive success. And if we do that, this is gonna be a long-term relationship."

I feel that the Ratchet & Clank and Resistance series will stay on the PS3 anyway.

Also, this could mean that we'll get a multiplatform game that is on par or superior to the X360 version, which would be a good thing. I'm tired of lazy ports, one way or another, especially when they're screwed up as hard as The Orange Box or Bayonetta.

I wouldn't be so sure. Sony has a long history of letting exclusive series go multiplat.

I don't know what to think about this to be honest. It's always been on the cards so it's not a pretty big surprise, but I do question whether they've shot themselves in the foot. Sony's ALWAYS treated Insomniac like a first-party developer, giving them access to more resources (i.e. they get to code-share with the likes of Naughty Dog, Santa Monica, Studio London, Guerrilla, San Diego and Japan Studio) and presumably really good contract deals. Sony also owns Resistance and Ratchet & Clank.

I dunno, I just feel like Insomniac may be a shell without Sony, but they did prove with Resistance they can make new franchises outside of Ratchet.

My main qualm is with their access. Ted Price from Insomniac's said they're still really cosy with Sony, but I just don't believe they're going to get the same kind of access to Sony's first-party as they once did. And I just wonder what effect that'll have on them as a studio.

I'm not trying to understate their talent, Insomniac are a great team and if they're stoked about this deal then so am I. They are definitely one of my favourite studios in the industry and will remain that way. I'm super excited about what they come up with.

But for a studio to go from being an exclusive developer with major access (first-party like) to top Sony resources, I'm worried the switch to multiplatform (which is undoubtedly more time consuming) and the lack of access will be detrimental to their product. Secondly, say what you will about exclusives -- there's much less need for marketing. Everyone's constantly talking about them.

I wasn't fond of Resistance and the latest R&Cs haven't "wowed" me like the previous ones have. I have a shed of hope they can get back to their glory days.

Ratchet & Clank and Resistance will never come out on another platform. Sony own them. If they want to get pissy (which they're not going to) they can give the franchises to another developer.

I'll admit, I laughed.

This can only be a good thing really. More people having the option to play more games right? It's kinda cool that they lasted this long as an exclusive dev for Sony, but as long as they just keep developing games to a high standard, I can't really fault their decision.

Big news.  Insomniac games have always had the sort of quality to them that was reminiscent of Nintendo developed games.

I wonder what sort of game they'll make?

This is great for Insomniac.  Seems hard to believe anyone could be angry about such a deal, it benefits the developer and at the end of the day (potentially) generates revenue, development time and resources that flow into all of their projects.
Ie. the PS3 exclusives get even better (somehow) and The 360 has a brand new A-Team developer providing fans with even more great games.

On top of that , it seems like PS3 owners (the community most likely to complain about the deal) actually benefit the most. They keep their AAA exlusives, and possibly a new one from the sounds of it, and gain yet another a new IP in the process. If you dont own an Xbox, who cares if its multiplatform?!

Win Win Win Win Win.

They can put it on as many platforms as they like, as long as it's still awesome.  And at least we know the PS3 version won't be some half assed port :P

And a nicely written article too Brad.

I don't know, maybe this is something Sony needs too. Up to now I imagine "the masses" just assumed Insomniac were owned by Sony, so when they come out talking about how great the PS3 is as a platform it's generally been met with "Big surprise, Insomniac saying nice things about their boss". It could end up being good on a PR level for people to see a good developer that's cozy with Sony while not being seen as owned by them.

Also, if Sony pulls out on their access, all that's going to lead to is a decrease in Insomniac's PS3 game quality, strained relations with the developer, and potentially bad press for Sony.

Time will tell I suppose, but on the bright side - it's a good day to be other platforms.

I'm all for it. Insomniac gets more revenue and the original exclusives, stay that way. Plus, this new IP can still be played on the PS3, it's not like they went with a 360 exclusive as much as some folks try to spin it that way. This is good stuff.

Does it matter? If Insomniac aren't making them then it really doesn't matter who owns the name and if they stay exclusive or not.

Just like Naughty Dog and Crash, the Ratchet & Clank brand will become almost instantly meaningless without Insomniac behind the development.

...well, unless they gave it to Naughty Dog - then it would become more valuable then ever :)

@ProfessorEss: You're right of course, and I'm not a developer so I don't know how these things work, but I just can't see Sony allowing Naughty Dog or Guerrilla or Santa Monica or Media Molecule to give Insomniac a big chunk of code that achieves "this, this and this" when that code may get adapted into their XBOX 360 title which strengthens their competitor's system.

I'm probably way off the mark about how all this developer stuff works (very likely), but yeah...

I just want to take this one: I hope console exclusivity never dies out. I actually think the console wars are great (not the idiot fanboy wars, mind) -- you get Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo (and hopefully others in the future) constantly pushing each other as hard as they can which I believe results in better games and better systems.

I also think exclusives help to "identify" a system. I hope we NEVER have one unified gaming system.

Having said that -- I don't want to come across like a negative nancy -- I'm a huge Insomniac fan and I'm looking forward to their new game! :)

Announcements in this industry are far too important and structured these days for him to drop it at the end of what was already a bombshell in and of itself.

Plus, now they've created this period where everyone will be talking about them and "what will this new franchise be?!"

Must say the response here is pretty well reasoned and thought out. I imagine elsewhere it's not nearly as true.

Still, this is probably a good thing. It's become sort of a trend now. Companies that aren't exactly owned by a company but has strong allegiances one way or another seem to be at the very least dipping their toe in another platform.

I don't think this could bite Insomniac in the butt. I mean, Sony is bereft of exclusive quality titles as it is, there are some for sure, but not to the same degree as other consoles. It would be a bad idea on Sony's part to pull some support from Insomniac, especially after so many years of loyal work. I mean, they've created  some of Sony's most recognizable franchises. That's got to be worth something.

While I don't mind them for being not exclusive, I just hope they don't overwork themselves for making multi-platform and end up making mistakes.

That's because those franchises weren't OWNED by Sony, and weren't binding Insomniac with a legal contract that does NOT allow these products going multi-platform,and Resistance   and Ratchet and Clank (waaaaay to many ends xP),are both ownership of Sony Computer Entertainment, and the best 360 owners can hope for is a WAAAAY to expensive clone,so bad news for ya'll 360 owners-Sony WILL resist the urge to let Insomniac release Resistance multiplat :(

" Not good for Sony.  "
Why not? New game is a PS3 game too silly-billy. "
They just lost a trusted partner making exclusives for 16 years.  "
Who will continue to make games for their system. "
But they aren't exclusives.

Exclusives move systems, Sony cares about that. I am not really a fan of Insomniac as of late so I don't mind it myself (not that any consumer should see it as a bad thing anyways).
