Irrational Asks, 'What Is Icarus?'

And I respond, "I dunno."

If Irrational Games' call for spoken speculation on the topic of Irrational Games' next game on popular message board NeoGAF wasn't enough to convince you that the studio is poised to reveal its latest in the near future, perhaps the fact that its asking the enthusiast press to hit a New York-based event in mid-August might. But if you're still skeptical, take a gander at this teaser Web site. It's a seemingly official creation whose URL includes the project name of Irrational's forthcoming game, "Icarus." One wouldn't drum up this anticipation for nothing, right? RIGHT?

The site, What is Icarus, begs the big question in its URL, but there is no answer--yet, at least. For now it's just a splash page with a decent-sized fleck and a sober message that springs forth if you gape at said mysterious fleck for far too long.

== TEASER ==As Joystiq points out, the domain registration of the site doesn't reveal an Irrational connection. It should be noted though that the site's URL and its nameservers, which are mapped to Take-Two and Rockstar Games, point towards this page being real deal.

So, what is Icarus? We'll know soon enough, be it from a far more overt webpage tease fans consume and puzzle out, or as a result of the event on August 11. In the meantime, though, what do you believe Irrational is working on? Will it be something we'll readily be able to associate with Irrational? That is to say, will it be something that builds on the atmospheric and RPG-light mechanics the studio has fiddled with for so long?

Hahahaha. I apologize. But it's the only way . . . . :P It'll never happen again. I can assure you.

@astrotriforce: I got it on a quick look by typing in actual words. So it isn't the only way. Congrats anyways.

On topic: I have no clue what this game is gonna be.

Clearly Nintendo sold part of the rights to Kid Icarus and this is an origins story.

Kid Icarus: Origins.

.....Interesting.

Whatever this game is it should have a commentary track by Shawn Elliot.

That tagline is excellent. "And I respond 'I dunno'."

Can't be any more mediocre looking then the other game the just announced.

Posted by MarkWahlberg

Icarus is the dumbest person in all of Greek Mythology.

/thread.

@crusader8463: What other game?
Posted by JasonNelson

What sober message is he talking about? I stared at that thing for a minute or 2 and didn't see anything.

Posted by crusader8463
@buzz_killington:  I got them mixed up with a different developer. = (

If I were them I would make 'Skyshock', about a Bespin-esque city in the clouds.  I have said this before, and 'Icarus' doesn't exactly make me want to change my mind.  Of course, it will probably be something totally different.

Weird, but excited to see what they are up to.

Oh I see, ok.

Icarus is a third, up-to-now unknown adversary of Andrew Ryan who advocated for a return to polytheism.

Irrational are one of those companies that I can be fairly sure that whatever they make will be quality stuff.  I just hope it's not god damn Kid Icarus.

@Tactical_Kill:
Sure it's not the only way but to guarantee you'll get it over others I'd say it is. Since most people just type "first" or "cool" or whatnot. But thanks. :) It made the rest of my day working easier. Haha.

If its Irrational, considering the E3 Deus Ex trailer had the part at the beginning where he dreamt he was Icarus and having his wings burnt off, I'd venture a guess and say its that.

Edited by Tru3_Blu3

After playing Deus Ex, I do know who Icarus is. I will not spoil it, though.

well it's obvious isn't it?
Icarus is a sky platform created by the government to spy on everyone, so to 'keep' them safe. Unfortunately it's AI became self aware and it started creating armies of nanites which infect people, thus turning them into..well you could call them the guardians of humanity or 'Sentinels'
You are someone who was able to fight off the infection, and yet retained a link to the mainframe, allowing you access to the same abilities as these...'sentinels' while maintaining your humanity.
Its so obvious from that image of the moon being eclipsed by the satellite.

My guess? A social arcade spy thriller via facebook, with millions of microtransactions. :P

Nah, best guess is probably a spy or techno triller shooter or action rpg esc game.

But Irrational has nothing to do with Deus Ex, they just have a tacit connection via game design and likely some staff that worked on both.

I'm really hoping it's the true sequel to System Shock 2.
Posted by WreckinRodRumbler

Rockstar Games, you say?

Sign me up, and I don't even know what the hell this is!

Posted by Trucker_Sean

I hope it's a video game adaptation of the Iron Maiden song "Flight of Icarus".  That would be rad.

Posted by NekuCTR

It'll be a zombie game.

Posted by blaakmawf

That fuzzy patch just before the toenail?

Posted by Gav47

God damn it Irrational, get back to work on 'Irrational Interviews', I need my episode 2.

Posted by Willy105

It's Avatar vs. Avatar all over again.

Posted by frsty13
@Jazz: Interesting take...that could potentially be a solid game idea if it's off lol.

Personally, I'm hoping the player's progression ties into the myth instead of the antagonist's.  If the first Bioshock's team is on it, they could pull it off.  If it's the sequel's...I'm very skeptical.

Irrational must be working on the remake of Final Fantasy VII, or maybe a Pokemon MMO...

Posted by Cristoflanga

I'd hope for a well constructed, atmospheric environment and a complex, philosofical story written by Ken Levine. Also, for PS3, or I'm out.

Posted by Napalm

Who gives a fuck about Icarus? Give us fucking System Shock 3.

Edited by MrKlorox

I have zero hopes for this game. Irrational is the most over hyped developer around right now.

Posted by gbrading

I'm wondering if it has anything to do with asteroid 1566 Icarus.
Posted by rottendevice

It seems like Irrational is making another original IP, rather than rehashing System Shock or Bioshock again.  This makes me very happy.

My guess: it's a Panzar Dragoon-style aerial combat game with plasmids and moral ambiguity!

Edited by Blackout62

Irrational Games is also making a Deus Ex prequel?

Posted by Franstone

I worked for Irrational a few years back let me see if I can find out...
But I won't tell yoouuuuuu!
Mmmmmwwuuaaahhahahahaaaa!!
Posted by dexterslu

Well, they brought Shawn Elliot on to work on this game - so it's either a magazine writing simulator or a grocery store sim. Those are my best guesses

That thing is totally growing - on the site currently it's bigger and more round than it is in the article's picture.

You heard it here first, kids.

I think I agree - it appears to at least be in a different relative position and have a different shape than it does in the picture on the story. Hard to say though that it's definitely bigger for sure.
Posted by HaciendaSquish

All the news stories I can find have the same picture as this one, with at least one side of the dot squared off. None of them, however, mention the "sober message," and I haven't noticed anything after waiting as long as my attention span would bear.

I gave up on watching teaser sites after Kojima's "Next" project

Posted by Insectecutor

@spotpilgrim - it looks like the moon through clouds. It's currently showing a full moon which, as of July 29th, seems accurate. August 11th will be a new moon.

Posted by Woodroez

Now it seems to have a couple of sides clipped. I wonder if there's not multiple shapes in the sky that this moon is passing over.

I think the speck has moved.
