Irrational Asks, 'What Is Icarus?'

If Irrational Games' call for spoken speculation on the topic of Irrational Games' next game on popular message board NeoGAF wasn't enough to convince you that the studio is poised to reveal its latest in the near future, perhaps the fact that its asking the enthusiast press to hit a New York-based event in mid-August might. But if you're still skeptical, take a gander at this teaser Web site. It's a seemingly official creation whose URL includes the project name of Irrational's forthcoming game, "Icarus." One wouldn't drum up this anticipation for nothing, right? RIGHT?
 
The site, What is Icarus, begs the big question in its URL, but there is no answer--yet, at least. For now it's just a splash page with a decent-sized fleck and a sober message that springs forth if you gape at said mysterious fleck for far too long.

Clearly Nintendo sold part of the rights to Kid Icarus and this is an origins story.

Icarus is a third, up-to-now unknown adversary of Andrew Ryan who advocated for a return to polytheism.

Irrational are one of those companies that I can be fairly sure that whatever they make will be quality stuff.  I just hope it's not god damn Kid Icarus.

If its Irrational, considering the E3 Deus Ex trailer had the part at the beginning where he dreamt he was Icarus and having his wings burnt off, I'd venture a guess and say its that.

After playing Deus Ex, I do know who Icarus is. I will not spoil it, though.

Icarus is a sky platform created by the government to spy on everyone, so to 'keep' them safe. Unfortunately it's AI became self aware and it started creating armies of nanites which infect people, thus turning them into..well you could call them the guardians of humanity or 'Sentinels' 
You are someone who was able to fight off the infection, and yet retained a link to the mainframe, allowing you access to the same abilities as these...'sentinels' while maintaining your humanity.
Its so obvious from that image of the moon being eclipsed by the satellite. 

My guess? A social arcade spy thriller via facebook, with millions of microtransactions. :P
 
Nah, best guess is probably a spy or techno triller shooter or action rpg esc game.

I hope it's a video game adaptation of the Iron Maiden song "Flight of Icarus".  That would be rad.

Irrational must be working on the remake of Final Fantasy VII, or maybe a Pokemon MMO...

I'd hope for a well constructed, atmospheric environment and a complex, philosofical story written by Ken Levine. Also, for PS3, or I'm out.

Who gives a fuck about Icarus? Give us fucking System Shock 3.

I have zero hopes for this game. Irrational is the most over hyped developer around right now.

It seems like Irrational is making another original IP, rather than rehashing System Shock or Bioshock again.  This makes me very happy. 
 
My guess: it's a Panzar Dragoon-style aerial combat game with plasmids and moral ambiguity!

Irrational Games is also making a Deus Ex prequel?

Well, they brought Shawn Elliot on to work on this game - so it's either a magazine writing simulator or a grocery store sim. Those are my best guesses

All the news stories I can find have the same picture as this one, with at least one side of the dot squared off. None of them, however, mention the "sober message," and I haven't noticed anything after waiting as long as my attention span would bear.

I gave up on watching teaser sites after Kojima's "Next" project

@spotpilgrim - it looks like the moon through clouds. It's currently showing a full moon which, as of July 29th, seems accurate. August 11th will be a new moon.

Now it seems to have a couple of sides clipped. I wonder if there's not multiple shapes in the sky that this moon is passing over.

I think the speck has moved.
