Jack Tretton No Longer With Sony

The lovable executive has decided to part ways with PlayStation.

It's a time of change at Sony, apparently. The company has just announced Sony Computer Entertainment America president and CEO Jack Tretton will be leaving Sony behind.

"This is a result of a mutual agreement between Mr. Tretton and SCEA not to renew their contractual relationship," the company said in a press release.

Tretton's successor will be Shawn Layden, who is currently exec. VP and COO of Sony Network Entertainment International. He starts the job on April 1.

Next news; Bobby Kotick steps down over at Activision. Tretton steps in and then enters a merger with EA.

You heard it here first!

He was a good face for the company. Hate to see him go; I always enjoyed his E3 keynotes.

Well good luck to him wherever he goes.

Well that's it. Sony is done...

That really sucks, I always liked good ol' Jack. Who would've thought I'd ever say that about some guy in a big executive position.

I wish him the best in whatever he does next.

Aw man. :(

You salute the man who annouced a monthly fee for online multiplayer. We parted ways back then, he and I.

And Adam Boyes inches ever closer.

No kidding. Things are afoot at the Circle PS.

What is that from?

Jack always seemed like the best at what he does. Kind of surprised Sony let him leave. Wonder where he'll go next.

I understand that internet nitwits get confused and scared when somebody actually quits while on top of things, but he did this gig for 19 years. Who wouldn't want to go try something else? He's in his 50's, too.

Edited by Feller13

WHAT?! Of all the soulless corporate whores, Jack was the only one that seemed honest and actually excited about the work Sony was doing.

Can't wait for the next bombcast!

I think Jack deserved no small credit in keeping the PS brand relevant and thrive in North America. Probably Sony, having outdone themselves with successful PS4 launch, considered his services redundant.

Good, get the fuck out. I've had no time for this prick since he claimed that the month long PSN outrage a few years ago was no big deal and "overblown by the press."

Posted by LucidDreams117

Well, unlike a lot of other execs, he's going out on a high note. Can't top last years E3. No sir. He dropped Microsoft and curb stomped em. I even felt it. Pure entertainment for sure.

And this is coming from a mainly Microsoft guy.

Edited by DrDarkStryfe

I am not shocked that much. He was pretty non-existent in the final marketing push leading up the launch of the PS4 in the US, with Andrew House, Adam Boyes, and Shu being the faces of the launch.

I will miss the man. As much as as last year's E3 press conference was fun to watch, my most memorable moment of the man was his apology to all of the PS3 owners after the massive breach of the PlayStation Network. He meant what he said that day, and did without a teleprompter to feed him words.

Best of luck in your future endeavors, Jack.

Adam Boyes, one step closer to the Iron Throne.

Skip to the end for the mic drop.

What!? This guy is the man! He's like the Sony equivalent of Reggie! The new guy's got some huge shoes to fill. Best of luck to Tretton! Gonna miss him at E3.

That..sucks? Maybe..?

Seems weird for Sony of America's CEO to leave right as the new generation is just starting, especially with how well the console did in America (remember it JUST came out in Japan). I guess he could be leaving for a better job, but he's the president and CEO of SONY America, you don't get too much higher than that.

There's the poster-signing livestream coming up in about an hour, you might not have to wait that long to hear some discussion about this.

That sucks. He gave the best press conferences. I don't know if he could top E3 last year and now that he just launched the most successful console ever maybe he felt like it was time for a change. Wonder if he's going to retire, do some passion project, or join up with another major company.

Damn, Jack was one of the few people at E3 that are always entertaining.

Or! He's been with SCEA for twenty years and wants to do something new. It's shocking, I know, but after twenty years of doing something, a lot of people want to try something new.

"Go out on top," as they say.

Well, shoot. From my perspective, Mr. Tretton was amazingly good at walking that tightrope between authenticity, artifice, humor, and professionalism. He has done a crazy hard job really well. Glad to see him go out in the midst of SCEA success, and I wish him the best in whatever comes next!

I give Jack Tretton 4 giant enemy crabs out of 5.

Edited by Castiel

Goddamn I'm going to miss him on the E3 stage or any other interview he would do. I always respected Jack Tretton in a way, cause he seemed like a tough but fair no bullshit business man.

Shawn Layden has some big shoes to fill.

Posted by Lausebub

Maybe he's leaving for the gaming division at Amazon? That would be pretty exciting.

Anyway, that's a big loss for Sony. He was a face of the company and one of the few liked executives out there, especially in this market. I really hope he stays in the gaming industry.

Edited by Vod_Crack

Why do people like this guy? He was a good talker, for sure, but why are people acting all heartbroken in this comment section?

Edited by gbrading

Who's going to look smug at E3?! Jack Tretton was my go-to guy!

Posted by StarvingGamer

There goes my E3 :'(

Edited by HellknightLeon

I would hate to start a new job or position on April 1st.

E3 2013 FOREVER!

I miss him already. So much.

Jack Tretton is my favorite CEO. Remember when he laid off all those people? Or when he said If you can find a PS3 on store shelves he'll pay you $1200. Or when he said when he can't sell you a PS4 it breaks his heart. The way he was totally silent on the PSN hacks. This whole loving the CEO thing is so weird. He sees you as sales figures. You're literally a walking dollar sign. And like a gold digger, he'll be want you want until you no longer serve his purpose.

Edited by Krataur

There must be trouble back in Boston. He's returning to consolidate power of his underground crime empire.

All the best in your future endeavors Mr. Tretton. A true BOSS. Sad day.

Posted by Legion_

Oh man, he's my favorite part of E3. My favorite part of Sony too, come to think of it. I HEART YOU JACK.

I don't even think he was that. He was super bland and boring.

At least he stayed until after the launch. Unlike a certain floppy-haired gentleman.

Adam Boyes just got that much closer to the top!

Posted by OneKillWonder_

Aw shit, that really sucks. The guy seemed very personable and did some great things for the company. Really gonna miss seeing at the E3 conferences. At least he's leaving on the ass whooping he gave MS at last year's.

A lot of people I like seem to be leaving from their respective companies lately.

Posted by Jedted

Guess he thought this was a good high note to go out on.

If this turns out to be an April Fool's joke then Sony has a wicked sense of humor.
