Jeff Gerstmann Heads to New York, Takes Questions

Watch the video of Jeff's trip to Brooklyn and the NYU Game Center, where questions were asked and answered.

Before PAX East consumed us all last weekend, I took a quick trip to Brooklyn to make an appearance at the NYU Game Center. They've got a very cool thing going out there, providing students with high-tech setups like 3D printers, motion capture gear, and so on. If there were more game-dedicated curriculums out there when I was getting out of high school, perhaps I would have found my way into one of them, rather than rushing straight into the job market. But, of course, there's no one way into the video game industry. There's no one way into the "covering the video game industry" industry, either. Anyway, enough preamble. Here are a couple of hours of video with me speaking with James Marion, who was kind enough to invite me out in the first place, and taking questions from the audience. I had a good time, and unlike the events that followed that weekend at PAX, no bottles were broken over any heads during the course of this discussion. Oh well, there's always next time...

For more on the NYU Game Center and its ongoing series of talks, check out this website on the internet.

(Also, if you're on mobile and the Vimeo embed doesn't show, perhaps you'll have better luck by going directly to the video.)

I'd love to see more stuff like this from Jeff and the rest of the crew and for them to continue down the path of moving away from reviews and towards more industry connected-type stuff.

I can't imagine how cool this must have been to see. I think its great that there is literally no secret Jeff that comes out in interviews. It's still just Jeff.

Man, that moderator is REALLY handsome.

Thank you so much for arranging and putting this together. Had a lot of fun that night, made a new friend, got some pics with Alex and Jeff, and got to pick their brains a little bit during the impromptu meet-and-greet at the end. I think I could listen to Jeff talk for days in lieu of things like...eating, or going to the bathroom.

What makes me happy is that they have a decent cameraman. I'm used to these talks being filmed by someone who makes background noise or even talks. And usually the brightest neon lights available are turned on and the image is shaky.

I like to hear Jeff Gerstman talk, no matter where.

I thought someone would ask "the" question and ask since Ryan's passing, did he ever think about shuttting it down. Ryan was such a huge part of the "personality" of Giant Bomb, I still can't believe he's not out there somewhere.

I think it has been addressed at some point and Jeff did think about stopping GB but eventually kept on going. Might've been in a Jar Time/Tumblr or I'm just making it up in my own head and not realising.

Oh man, did it take so long to go up because Jeff broke an NDA at the end there? That'd be great!

Fantastic interview. Really enjoy getting Jeff's perspective on topics, not to wear the band tee to the concert or anything.

This was really fun and interesting to watch (cool interviewer too) and I can't wait to see the new faces Jeff is talking about. I vote for Danny O'Dwyer and Phil Fish!

I really appreciate how open @jeffand the rest of the crew are on the current state of the website and what their future ambitions are. That openness doesn't seem to be available on a lot of other websites, and it locks the community out. Whether me supporting GB makes the slightest bit of difference or not, I personally feel like it helps encourage the dudes to push forward with their plans. It's clear, and this talk helps demonstrate, that they are all so hyper aware of gaming culture and where it's at, that it reinforces why I trust every decision they make.

@alex's Big Rigs review was one of the first videos I saw as I was starting to get a feel for who I should be paying attention to on Gamespot; and here I still am.

Also nice to hear about why the GB/GS show was scrapped. I always wondered why.

Awesome talk. I even stopped it in the middle last night because I was dead tired and immediately jumped back in where I left off when I woke up this morning.

I'm glad to hear they plan to hire another person or two. Hopefully that will all work out!

I'd care about giantbomb a lot less if a bunch of freelancers I didn't care about started writing reviews I didn't want to read.

My hope is that they don't use the freelance budget for reviews but instead use it to pay people to write long-form articles about games/game related topics. You know maybe have a former dev write a series about making games, or some big Sega 32x fan write a big article about the 32x.

I hope so. But didn't Jeff say "give patrick freelance money" which sounds pretty bad. Might as well rename the website to Kotakubomb if that happens.

No, don't be stupid.

This is honestly one of my new favorite pieces of content.

The talk was top-notch, and man, the questions were incredible! Probably the best Q&A I've seen in ages. Really insightful questions that got Jeff talking about some complex and big issues. Gave some really solid and thoughtful responses that reminded me of why I keep coming back here. Guy knows the industry and culture like no one else in the enthusiast press.

lol did the dude in the beginning just say queer people?

As I understand it, "queer" has become a kind of catch-all term for people not confined to "traditional" binary gender roles, inclusive of LGBT and a whole spectrum of other social-sexual identities. It's been reclaimed and mostly lost its power as a derogatory word.

Really fantastic talk. It's great to hear a lot more up-front info about the future of the site; stuff we've only heard light rumblings of beforehand.

And Jeff really knows how to speak in just about every environment; dude is talented as heck. I hope GB can sort out the business end of things soon so that he can go back to doing more of what he's good at.

Really happy to hear Jeff acknowledge the wiki and all, as you would otherwise suspect it was about ready to be put to pasture. However, I feel like Jeff has long aired his aspirations for the wiki and yet it's been stuck in the same state for so long now. I'd like to hope these new workings within the wiki will be implemented sooner rather than later; maybe when they at least finally hire these new staff members.

Yeah I agree, but I honestly think they don't have the resources to improve the wiki. So much of that was Dave and the other Whiskey engineers and designers. I don't think we'll see a significant move to improve the wiki in quite some time. I can't even remember the last time I edited anything. Also it's kind of the same way with a lot of the proposed changes he's discussing. We'll see I guess, but I really don't see Jeff writing long-form criticism, for instance.

@hollitz: shots fired at PAX panel. You're right though, when people try hard to be funny it sort of kills a show.

I've never been to Pax and I've never watched any video outside of the GB ones from previous years, but I have to say, if what I saw from the twitch streams this year is any indication the people asking questions were more natural, comfortable and funny than the people behind the desks. Every time I turned the stream on, if it wasn't JWong selling monitors (itself a very poorly produced cringeworthy piece of video) it was the worst panel I've ever seen in my life. Every single time it was the absolute worst thing ever.

I'm guessing it can't be that bad all the time, as there's about to be a 4th pax, but what little I saw was terrible.

The guy hosting did an alright job. I give him credit because it's hard to ask questions, give prompt replies and keep everything under control. Not enough experience but a good show nonetheless.
