Just Cause 2 Is Safe--For Now

Developer Avalanche has slashed its work force by half following the loss of two game contracts.

Stunt position!
Stunt position!
Headline on Joystiq gave me a rude awakening this morning.

"Avalanche Studios sliding 77 employees pink slips"

What?! Swedish dev house Avalanche, as you may remember, is the maker of Just Cause, the absurdly over-the-top game of open-world regime change set in a Caribbean dictatorship. There's a lot of affection for Just Cause around the office here, because the Latin lover-style secret agent protagonist, Rico Rodriguez, is so hammy. Oh, and because it lets you do things like leap from a speeding motorcycle, grapple onto and jack a helicopter, then fly that chopper straight into a mountainside military base just after parachuting lazily to safety. The game is stupid in the best possible way and I love it.

Avalanche has been working on a Just Cause sequel for Eidos, the fate of which I was immediately concerned about.

Nothing to worry about there--Just Cause 2 is still in production, as is another project I've never heard of called The Hunter. It turns out the job cuts resulted from Avalanche's loss of publishing deals for two other unannounced projects. On the upside, the studio says Just Cause 2 will get a "stronger focus" in the wake of the condensed staff. On the downside, 77 developers are out of work.

I wanted to make some kind of joke involving Tyrkish Peber here, but really there's nothing funny about people losing their jobs, so I'll just say: Tyrkish Peber! Avoid it!

I'm sorry Brad but I do NOT share your feelings about Just Cause. I thought it was just stupid. Period.

Just Cause was just ridiculous, I played the title and it felt like the developers tried so hard to do everything about open world sandbox games all at once.

Just Cause was good, but way too repetitive. I hope they will make Just Cause 2 better.

I've only played the demo of Just Cause, and I don't plan on changing my holiday-game schedule by squeezing Just Cause in there, but I'd definitely check out a sequel. Hopefully JC2 (AND PROTOTYPE GOD DAMNIT) come through afterall.

Depressingly, I kind of liked Just Cause.

It was stupid, in a fun way.

I picked it up used for very cheap and had some fun with it.  It's actually a better Mercenaries 2 than Mercenaries 2 ended up being, which is kind of bad.

The first one was Just Atrocious. I hated it. Though that didn't stop me from finishing it.

On a completely unrelated and less depressing note, oh how I love Just Cause.

Not being able to chose your side turned me away from the first one. If you can chose your side, and see the story from their perspective. That'd be fun.
