Just What Is Bethesda Up To Next?

Is it more Fallout? A new Elder Scrolls? The Internet is aflame with conflicting reports and speculation.

"Hey! Over here! I'm on shelves now!"
Fallout 3 is scarcely a day old now, and all anyone cares about is Bethesda's next project! Can't you animals be satisfied with what you have for once?

The story last week (here it is on Kotaku) had Fallout 3's executive producer Todd Howard talking about the decade-long wait between the last Fallout and the new one, and saying the next one won't be so far off.

I think it's good for people to miss things. Ten years between 'Fallout' is a bit long, but I think there's this nostalgia factor...three years is a good time frame between games.

OK, cool, another Fallout in 2011 then? Righto.

But wait! In a story posted today, Bethesda publishing exec Paul Oughton chats with Gamesindustry.biz about the company's future lineup, wherein he drops this gem.

At the moment we've got Fallout 3 for this year and potentially there's a new Elder Scrolls title in 2010...

Wait, really? So which is it, Fallout or Elder Scrolls? Or could it be both? I haven't heard anything about Bethesda dramatically staffing up lately, so the idea of the company working on both Fallout and Elder Scrolls sequels simultaneously--both of which would probably be sprawling in scope and thus intense in production overhead--doesn't seem very feasible.

My money would be on a Fallout 3 expansion and then a full Elder Scrolls game, and then perhaps a new Fallout sequel after that. But that's just knee-jerk speculation.

How are you liking Fallout 3 so far? If you had your druthers, would you go for a new Fallout or a new Elder Scrolls next from Bethesda? And what would you like to see changed in either one?

I like what I've played so far of Fallout but Oblivion has had me (and still has me) wrapped up in it's clutches, even though I've finished it almost totally (main quests, and all major faction quests).  I'd like to see another Elder Scrolls before another full Fallout game.  I need to spend time with Fallout for the next couple of years first.

Fallout ftw, Oblivion had a flawed leveling system, where you maxed out your secondary skills to be better than the mobs that kept leveling up when you did leveled your primary skills. And the combat in oblivion just sucked.

Well assuming they work with how the releases are now, I think a new Elder Scrolls game would come first, and then another Fallout game. But I don't think it's all that crazy to think the first one might come in 2010 and the new fallout in 2011. After all, I doubt they worked on Fallout 3 for a mere two years because that would be just crazy. So my guess is, they'll focus on a new Elder Scrolls and in the meantime try to squeeze in some Fallout work here and there. Then when they ship out the new TES they'll go full steam on the new Fallout.

Man that would be game of the decade for sure then

I'd say give me a new Elder Scrolls game first, then Fallout4.

As for improvements, I can think of several, some of which sound like they have done with Fallout 3.

1)  More distinct voice-acting
2)  I'll settle for less of a world if it has unique dungeons
3)  Don't have critters auto-level around you.  I want to start weak and end bad-ass
4)  No more telepathic guards.  If you aren't spotted committing a crime, you should get away with it.  Period.
5)  And for the love of god, better face models and/or lighting effects

Bethesda stated when they announced Fallout 3 that they had brought in a second role playing franchise so that they would be able to keep their artists and designers busy between Elder Scrolls games.  They staff up as the project continues, so as Fallout 3 went gold, all those people are moving over to the real "building the game world" production part of the new Elder Scrolls game, and the company is just starting the planning phase for the next Fallout game.  The games still have a three year production cycle, but you're ideally going to see 18 months between releases, with Elder Scrolls being the series that drops in Spring, and Fallout in fall (note that there were 18 months between the release of Elder Scrolls 3 on PS3, and they wrapped up all the production of DLC for Oblivion in that time frame, and the release of Fallout 3).

The more interesting thing to me is that previously Bethesda has talked about how much they liked being a game that followed in the wake of the Xbox and 360 launch windows because they got strong sales as the first role playing titles out of the gate, and also got a nice long tail on the games.  If ES6 runs into a 24 month schedule, we could conceivably see this as a new gen console launch title.  If so, then we should probably only be seeing concept art and PC screens going forward until they can reveal themselves as a launch window title when the next Xbox is announced.

Oh i know, i dont know what peoples problem is, as soon as a game is out all they care about is the next one, thats fucking dumb!

However "what is their next project" is a little different, healthy speculation can be achieved, all i want is a game that isn't a elder scrolls oblivion re-skin, which i know wont happen again.

well judging by the time frame, i think your assumptions are spot-on. its high time for a new scrolls entry, and too soon for another fallout. bethesda games are the kind that take years to fully play, and i think oblivion might have finally run its course.

hmm I haven't played Fallout games before but the third installment seems to be ok, I played it like five hours now, feels a lot like Oblivion.
Nevertheless I would prefer a new Elder Scrolls title. Oblivion had a good story which was better tied into the game than the one in Morrowind (never completed it even though I spend at least 200h on this game). Still Morrowind felt better in my opinion since you didn't feel that you have such a limited amout of power like in Oblivion. For example I hated that the enemys leveled with me because I never encountered enemys out in the wood where I said: "dude, ten more levels and I will kill that beast", and the same on the other side: I didn't feel as powerful as in Morrowind, actually I was quite frustrated when I entered the addon-world after completing all the stuff from the main game and still getting beaten up by 2-3 monsters. And I really missed the levitation skill. Reloading magic items was a pain in the ass in Oblivion as well since they didn't do it by themselfs.
So what I am hoping for is a new Elder Scrolls, with the story telling of Oblivion and the technical outfit of Morrowind!

Don't make me choose between the two...god...way too hard.  I think I'd like what Brad said the most though.  A Fallout expansion...maybe a few(dog armor anybody?) and then another Elder Scrolls.  I think I'd want the next Elder Scrolls to be on the next generation though...I don't think they'd be able to change it enough on this generation to make it feel that new.  Heck even Fallout feels really close to Oblivion, but they can get away with it for this because the themes are so different.  I must say though, I think I like Fallout's leveling system more than Oblivion's...maybe they should raise the cap from 20 though...I don't feel like I've played very far at all and I'm almost level 6 already.

I'm 11 hours into Fallout 3 so far and loving it.
It is not perfect because to me once in awhile somethings feel unfinished or not as fleshed out as surrounding areas in the game would indicate.
I got a feeling that had Bethesda been able too they would have pushed this games release date back til' march or so to fine tune it a bit more. Kinda like they ended up doing with TES IV: Oblivion.
Still I'm more than happy to be playing this great game now.

If Bethesda has any ideas on how to expand and/or change Fallout 3 I'd like to see them work on DLC packs for release every 3-6 months. Kind of like what Criterion was been doing with Burnout Paradise. It'd also be pretty sweet if they could manage a small co-op campaign. One thing for sure though, I really don't want to see them hammer out another Fallout game just 'cause they can. Take some time, let this one sink in, expand on it and keep people interested. The fuck and chuck model the industry uses at large needs to go.

"how about oblivion with guns. literally.  enemy wizard boom headshot."

Almost, yeah. I'd like to see them go this route with some sort of Steampunk themed game. I used to hate them but they've made so many improvements over Oblivion for Fallout 3 that if they can just go that one more step and finish up polishing the engine and it's features then they could really be in with a chance at winning over those who still hate them (Me).
