Kid Icarus: Uprising's Surprise Use of Circle Pad Pro

If you were concerned about playing the game left-handed, worry no more.

Kid Icarus: Uprising was one of the first games announced for 3DS, and soon it'll finally be here.
Kid Icarus: Uprising was one of the first games announced for 3DS, and soon it'll finally be here.

Left-handed players can now look forward to playing Kid Icarus: Uprising properly, as The Official Nintendo Magazine UK reports the game will leverage Circle Pad Pro to aid the left-handed.

Circle Pad Pro add-on hasn’t launched outside of Japan yet, but the general use for the accessory, which gives 3DS two analog sticks, has been to more organically map camera or aiming controls.

Nintendo had not shown much interest in throwing its own weight behind Circle Pad Pro, suggesting it was a bone thrown towards third-parties. That Circle Pad Pro won’t be sold anywhere but Nintendo.com and GameStop lends more credence to the theory.

Kid Icarus: Uprising director Masahiro Sakurai claims he didn’t know about Circle Pad Pro until its announcement, which is why its use is limited. Even with more time, that might not have changed.

“[That] would end up being just the same as controls on other platforms and I think the quick aiming possible with the touch panel suits the game best,” said Sakurai.

Circle Pad Pro launches over here on February 7, aka my birthday, and Kid Icarus: Uprising hits March 23.

This is like Nintendo admitted they kinda fucked up with just one analogue stick, right? I'm waiting for the inevitable 3DS revision with both incorporated into the console.

Coolio. Hope the game turns out to be good. I only found out about it today when I went to a Game store and saw you could pre-order it.

I hope this thing doesn't become too integral to the 3DS. I don't particularly want to invest in one.

@JoeyRavn: By allowing a peripheral to be used as an option to help aid left handed players and absolutely nothing else? And selling that peripheral to exactly one retailer?

Enjoy waiting forever.

They said at PAX that they were working on a solution for left-handed play, so this doesn't surprise me in the least. That being said, I'll be buying the accessory because hey, I'm a lefty.

two analog sticks or not, this game will suck. Literally every preview - and everyone whose touched the game at GDC and E3 in the past - have complained about the awkward, finger killing analog slider/touch screen controls (yeah, because that worked SOOOO well on all the world class, super successful DS First Person Shooters in the past...yeesh). Not to mention the awkward, limited "arena combat" style on-ground gameplay. None of that is very "Kid Icarus-like", which was ultimately just a Metroid style game with some flight/gliding mechanics. Why can't this reboot be a Metroidvania game with gliding/flying mechanics? This is a terrible game, with terrible controls, regardless of if you're right- or left-handed.

Huh, thats a pretty clever use, i never thought about that. I remember a mode on one of the DS advance wars games that i tried to play and found nearly impossible due to needing to use the D-Pad and Stylus to move and shoot in real time. I eventually settled for just holding the entire device upside down which kinda worked. Of course using the main analogue with my right thumb will have its own issues after years of using it with my left but its a step up from using a stylus with my right hand.

I still think that circle pad pro looks like garbage, but I guess they gotta implement it into as many games as possible to someone will actually buy it.

@Grissefar: If you were going for the quest you didn't get it because you can't say "first" because it just makes you look stupid. So if you were going for the quest you failed and look stupid if you weren't going for the quest you just look stupid.

If ever there was evidence that the 3DS was a rush job, this is it (until the 3DS Lite comes out this year). Many a preview mentioned the game's absolute unplayability for left-handed people, and Nintendo's reaction of "Whuh...?" was atrocious. This whole situation is so laughably infuriating, in the way that makes you mad but you don't really care anymore. I just simply cannot imagine how either the hardware or the game made it past prototyping without saying, "Hey guys, what about the 11% percent of the population that is left-handed?" Now that I actually typed it out, I can see how they missed it, but now that we're here, the oversight is dramatic, or stupid at the very least.

Can someone explain to me the "thing" here? Because i've played games with crazy non standard use of thumb sticks for years, and I don't recall the Dreamcast being a horrendous tragedy for left handed gamers. I'm just not sold on the severity of the problem. I can play wiimote/nunchuck games with "hands inverted" just fine, and I'm right handed. Maybe people have to start sucking it up and practise something they're uncomfortable with for the grander sake of everything?

Is it really so that all these left handed gamers out there disregarded the DC or GameCube because the sticks weren't the "right way" around?

I still think the biggest surprise about Kid Icarus is that people actually still care about Kid Icarus.

@Sunjammer: You're forgetting about the stylus of the 3DS. Most left handed people struggle with a pen in their right hand and the stylus is no different. Its not about the buttons, if you have a stylus in your left hand you cant use the joystick.

Circle Pad Pro? That is what that thing is called? I've been un-ironically calling it the "Franken-stick" for months now! Curse you 8-4play!

I mean, I knew it wasn't the name but I didn't actually know the name and for some reason was content to not find out.

I'm convinced that it has to be a bunch of 12-year-olds who saw the trailers for Smash Bros. Brawl and went "Oh man, they're putting Pit in this one? I FUCKING LOVE PIT!!", despite having never heard of him or the Kid Icarus series before. And since then, they've been clamouring for a new Kid Icarus game, presumably.

I mean, Smash Bros. Melee is pretty much 100% responsible for Fire Emblem games suddenly being localized and released in non-Japan territories, because everybody lost their shit over how cool Marth and Roy were. The difference is that Fire Emblem is a pretty rad series, while Kid Icarus had been dead for over 15 years and wasn't worth bringing back.
