Kiefer Sutherland Is Now Snake

24 and Lost Boys actor taking up the mantle for The Phantom Pain.

As part of its pre-E3 show, Metal Gear series creator Hideo Kojima revealed actor Kiefer Sutherland is the new voice of Snake for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.

Sutherland is best known for portraying Jack Bauer on the long-running TV show 24. He was pretty sweet in The Lost Boys, too.

One of the reasons Sutherland may have been chosen to portray Snake is the game’s reliance on performance capture for the role.

The previous voice of Snake, David Hayter, tried to take change in sarcastic stride on Twitter.

“Can't fault [Kiefer], “ said Hayter. “Great actor, good man. The game will probably still be excellent. Like New Coke! [...] To my beloved Tweeps, I can't thank you enough for all your support. Getting fired was never so heartwarming.”

MGSV: The Phantom Pain is scheduled for a release on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3...someday? A release date isn’t yet known.

I'm not exaggerating when I say this news has literally ruined my day.

I don't think I can justify buying MGS5... and that makes me very sad. :(

This is great news. I was growing tired of Hayter's voice "acting."

@spitznock: He is conveying inaccurate information. Trying to make sure it is correct is not "being dicks". Relaying news is a service and people who use the service deserve to have the correct info. Not all criticisms are personal attacks.

So my theory is, the game is Ground Zeros and seems to be in two parts, you play the first part as Naked Snake/Big Boss voiced by Keifer as you establish outer haven. Then you play the second part as young Solid Snake and you have to take the old man down, effectively making it a retelling of the original Metal Gear. Im maybe being a little too optomisitic but i hope its the case or im probably going to pass on this one, just like Kevin Conroy is Batman, Nolan North is Deadpool, to me David Hayter is Snake.

Edited by Gruff182

I like Kiefer Sutherland, he will give a great performance, but he will never be Snake.

Hayters voice is far to recognizable and iconic at this point.

If you just hear an audio clip, you'll know exactly who it is. Now you'll hear Jack Baur.

Again I really like Kiefer's stuff but at this point it would be like changing Nathan Drake or Shepards voice to a bigger stars voice. No need.

Konami fucked up.

David Hayter is trolling WAYYY to hard for him not to show up somewhere. Ever since this whole deal about him getting replaced started he's been doing nothing but poking people with sticks and getting them riled up about him not being in the game. The "Like New Coke" thing is just....too good.

Edited by Smokey_Earhole

Did Avi Arad kind of throw David Hayter under the bus, in that Konami show?

That was...awkward.

EDIT: but then again - Hayter's reaction to him being replaced, is also a bit childish.

I'm torn. On one hand this is awesome. On the other it's frustrating. IT'S AWESOMELY FRUSTATING!!!!!

To me he will always be the dude from the 2nd english version of armitage the 3rd the movie cut and that is all I am going to see the entire time I see words come out of snakes bigboss mouth.

he should be in a snatcher game.

I wish it was still Hayter, but I'm fine with Sutherland taking over as Snake. He'll do a fine job with the role.

THIS LEVEL OF BADASS-NESS IS SURELY ILLEGAL IN MOST COUNTRIES?! HOW WILL THE GAME GET RELEASED?

Posted by hollitz

I'll play it, but it's going to bother me the whole time.

Edited by Batmeng

1. I will miss Hayter.

2. I still hope they will announce that Mgs5 is also coming for the Ps4. I want those fine PC graphics, damn it.

Edited by mrfluke

i still think hayter will make some sort of cameo as a solid snake at the end of the game.

but Kiefer Sutherland should do a decent job

btw @patrickklepek, he's voicing big boss (naked snake) , not solid snake, might wanna fix that in the headline :P

aand you would want to attach the story to the big boss page. not the solid snake one.

Edited by HatKing

Is it just me, or was Solid Snake always kind of trying to be Kiefer Sutherland anyway? And I can't be the only one who thinks that the older Big Boss from MGS2 kind of looks like Donald Sutherland.

Posted by paulunga

I'd rather still have Hayter. I never liked Kiefer Sutherland. So sad, Donald's fucking awesome.

Edited by EnduranceFun

No he's not. He's "Snake." Ostensibly Big Boss. Giant Bomb's awful knowledge and no respect for this series continues to get on my nerves.

Hayter will be back when we reach Zanzibar and Outer Heaven (MG1 MG2 Solidized remakes), He has to be Right?

Guys, it's Revolver Ocelot's birthday today. He was born on D-Day. SIX SHOTS!

Apparently I share a birthday with Revolver Ocelot. Not sure how to feel about this. I'm so overshadowed.

EEEeeeeehhhhhh... Snake is Hayter to me. Mr. Sutherland is going to have to turn in one hell of a performance to not garner a lot of disappointment from fans. If they wanted a change I think they should have just gone with an unknown actor, oh well.

Tiny bit down about Hayter's reaction. I fully understand how he might feel especially if things were as unceremonious as they looked from this side. But man, I expected more from the Man I know as Snake. Fingers crossed there is a little bit of theatricality in there for his eventual return as Solid Snake along side the legendary soldier Keifer Sutherland.

I'm totally cool with this.

If Twitter is good for anything, it's inflating Patrick's word count!

Not that I'm super attached to any video game voice actor or anything, but there is something crumby about popular TV actors replacing them. Especially for such an iconic part in what will be an obvious big deal of a game.

Then again, I would have picked Kurt Russell.

CalorieMate was an item in MGS3: Snake Eater.

Kiefer Sutherland did CalorieMate commercials in Japan.

COINCIDENCE?!

Remember guys, Kojima is insane.

No he's not. He's "Snake." Ostensibly Big Boss. Giant Bomb's awful knowledge and no respect for this series continues to get on my nerves.

Konami hyped this as "THE NEW VOICE OF SNAKE!" So get mad at Konami.

Posted by billyhoush

Yeah that is awesome. I remember when I was in Japan 24 was soooo huge.

Edited by pingolobo

David Hater could've done the facial mocap just as well.

By the way. Hayter not being Snake (be it Naked/Solid/Liquid etc) is a big deal. He'll be alright and does not need the money but he'll be like Conan without The Tonight Show. There are things that money (or credit) can't buy or replace.

Edited by Cubical

FAct Kurt russel already played and perfected snake and big boss back in the 80's.....Oh wait he invented it,

Edited by kerikxi

It hurts me inside that Hayter isn't Snake. I have a connection with the Metal Gear series that no other game shares. It's irrational, unconditional love, and this feels a bit like a break up. Ultimately it doesn't matter, because if it has Metal Gear on the box, I must have it, and I must dominate it.

Last time Kojima flipped us fans the bird and did what he wanted, we got Raiden in MGS2. Excellent, incredible game with an absolutely god awful main character. I'm really hoping this isn't a repeat, but it sounds like Keifer understands how significant the role is.

Edited by sephirm87

He has 24 hours to determine whether or not love can bloom on a battlefield.

Edited by KoolAid

Man, this is odd. I love Kiefer Sutherland and Jack Bauer. I love Snake and David Hayter. I don't really want them to mix... I want them to stand on their own! I can get with what Kojmia is talking about, it seems like he is trying to push the performance aspect of the medium, kinda like how the first Metal Gear Solid did. Looking forward to it.

Sutherland will be Big Boss, Hayter will be Solid Snake.... I betcha'

He was NEVER liquid though. He was not big boss in MGS4 either.

There was always the chance they would call him in again if solid returns in a later game, but I think his bitterness is hurting those chances :(

@patrickklepek: Small error that isn't even really an error but I'll be "that guy"

Sutherland is now Big Boss, not Solid Snake

It's just you. If he was trying to be anyone, it's Snake Plissken.

Anyway, nothing against Kiefer, but he could not have sounded less interested if he tried. Talking about "the game" this and "the character" that, he could have been talking about any other game and character ever.

Say what you will about Hayter, whether you like him or not, he fucking knows Snake and MGS. I also don't think it's a good idea to put a big hollywood name at the center of your franchise. Kiefer might not be Robert Downey Jr in terms of popularity, but voice acting a game is a big time investment and you don't know if he'll always be available when you need him. That's not a problem for professional VAs, especially one you've been using for 15 years and who is part of probably the most iconic voice actor/character combination in the medium.

Edited by Rabid619

Wow that... hm. I'm not sure how I feel about this yet. I'm more than willing to welcome a change in Snake's voice (in fact I'm all for it), but I'm not sold on Kiefer being the right choice.

Going to have to wait and see a cut scene or trailer of some kind and see if the voice fits.

Edited by ArbitraryWater

Sure. I think Kiefer Sutherland could pull off old man Big Boss (not Solid Snake). Also, the Hayter stuff is obviously all part of the long con for when he shows up at the end of The Phantom Pain as a young Solid Snake.

Edited by Jaytow

I predict a trailer, at e3, similar to the mgs3 trailer where snake takes raiden out and sits in the main character chair. David Hayter is in this game, of that I have no doubt.

Posted by Hero_of_the_Day_2004

So if a young Solid Snake shows up in this game, what are the odds it's Hayter doing his voice still?
