Kiefer Sutherland Is Now Snake

I look forward to David Hayter squaring off against Kiefer Sutherland when Metal Gear 1 and 2 are remade.

I'm calling BS. Konami's promotional video:http://kotaku.com/kiefer-sutherland-is-snake-511672325 doesn't strike me as being particularly genuine. The footage of Kiefer and Kojima was all from the same shoot, I'm not getting the sense that Sutherland did any mocap for the trailer released earlier this year. I bet we'll find out that Hayter is still playing Naked Snake at E3.

If the voice is more important to you than the character itself that there's a problem. Voice actors are always subject to change. Hayter was a good voice, but he didn't make Snake. The convoluted writing did.

I think Kiefer is a good fit, and has done enough voice acting in his time to know what he's doing.

Ishmael is a hallucination. You don't see him in any of the stuff outside of the hospital.

@swaney: Do you really believe Kojima went and got Kiefer Sutherland to pretend he's gonna voice Snake in the next MGS in a fake announcement video at an attempt to arrange an ELABORATE RUSE? That's insane.

David Hayter isn't the "previous voice of Snake". Hayter is still the voice of Solid Snake, a character who is not in this game. Keifer Sutherland is the voice of Big Boss, aka Naked Snake, who is in this game. They are two different characters. They even talk to each other in MGS4, where Big Boss was, again, not voiced by David Hayter.

It blows my mind that there are people sharp enough to keep up with Metal Gera's convoluted plot but can't get their heads around the idea that these are two different characters, ergo two different voices. Keifer is the new voice of Big Boss; David Hayter is, by all accounts, still the voice of Solid Snake.

Disappointing because it's another case of a film star being chosen over a pure voice actor. Oh well, I enjoy Keifer a lot so it could be worse.

That is simply not true. The voice of a character, which would be the performance, is as important as all the other elements that bring it to life. A change is a change. Better or worse. But voice actors aren't just placeholders. A lot of people were also disappointed when they found out that the next Batman wouldn't be voiced by Kevin Conroy anymore. So let 'em be disapponted. They happen like the character that was created by everyone who contributed to it.

Big Bauer?!

It's not really getting fired though right? Isn't it more like he wasn't hired for it?

This is pretty cool since your bandaged friend in the original Phantom Pains trailer is also voiced by Sutherland. That could have been clever foreshadowing for the role, pure coincidence, or maybe he voices everybody because the game is bonkers.

This is crazy! I like Keifer a lot but that doesn't mean that every time I hear his voice I don't think it sounds like Keifer Sutherland. I am thoroughly confused by this. Replacing a famous voice with a different sounding famous voice....the continuity...my brain...SNAAAAAKKKKEEE

Thinking it through like that, yeah, it sounds insane. But if Kiefer is portraying someone else in the game? Not so much.

I'm not saying Kiefer Sutherland won't play Big Boss, but remember, this is Kojima we're talking about. The studio put together quite a bit of fake MGS2 footage to fool everyone with the reveal of Raiden. He's a master troll! ;)

Funny that both Snake and Sam Fisher are both getting new voices at the same time. If it's a reboot, then fine, but I hate it when actors are swapped out in stride. If the actor isn't available anymore, too expensive, or you just want to do something new, then just make a new character.

I say this as a fan of Kiefer. He's great. But as someone who loves Splinter Cell, but thinks Metal Gear is trash... if they both have to get new voices, I'm sad to see the best possible replacement actor go to the far lesser of the two franchises. Wouldn't Jack Bauer be perfect as Sam Fisher? The two characters are practically the same, so of course he would. Instead, he gets to play the role of an amnesiac, fifth-generation clone with nanomachines in his blood that make him think he's that guy who shoots bees from his mouth as he rides a unicorn through a wall of fire, or whatever absurd nonsense it's going to be this time. I admit, Kiefer would probably be more interested in playing that than a Jack Bauer doppleganger, especially since he's about to go back to playing Jack for 24 again this year. Ooh, I can't wait for that show to come back. It was awesome.

Their voices are pretty iconic, I'm sure the game will rock but it's a sad change.

As a huge fan of MGS i'm strangely okay with this. Honestly I would've felt betrayed if Hayter ended up voicing him after all this. And I cant think of anyone better to replace him than KS.

I still think this is more of a prank. I mean we knew Sutherland was in it, he voices the character thats not Snake in the demo, meaning he was at least available to take part. They tell us he is the new voice, yet still fail to provide even a snippet of Snake talking ingame, plus Avi Arad was the one that introduced Sutherland to Kojima...but Arad is friends with Hayter, as they worked on the X-Men films together. This also seems like the kinda thing that would be announced live at E3, not a pre recorded 10 minute video before E3.

Unless of course this is typical Kojima F'ing with us and this is all in service of leading to a Big Boss versus Solid Snake situation, in which it would be odd if they had the same voice.

They always lean towards real actors for performance capture, Nolan North and Troy Baker are the only exceptions as far I can tell, casting people tend to lean towards veterans of plays/tv or complete unknowns.(DmC, Infamous 2, Naughty Dog)

Hayter can voice an outrageous cartoon character fairly well, Guyver 2 is the only time we've seen him play a human being.

When ever I think about Metal Gear I'm always gonna say "Metal Gear?" in Hayter voice but i'm excited to see something new in Snakes character.

Also Hayter seems to me to be throwing a bit of a strop of this.

Its not exactly... confirmed hayter isn't in this game either. He won't be Big boss for sure. But, the dawn of the two snakes is coming. I would love for zanzibar land to be in 3d. Outer heaven even.

David Hayter portrayed Old Solid Snake. Sutherland should be great as Big Boss. You can make arguments either way. All I can say is that Kojima is a fucking idiot when it comes to storytelling.

Huge MGS nut here. I thought I would have been really mad, but I'm ok with it. Mainly because the moment Big Boss turns into the bad guy is approaching, and that only means that young snake (voiced by Hayter) must appear at some time :D

No seriously, I'm just happy they are making another one (or two) of these games.

That's another thing. I would have been fine if they'd cast Richard Doyle (Big Boss in MGS4) instead of Hayter. As a voice actor he's far more experienced than Kiefer and he's already played the part once, if only for 40 minutes. He was the only replacement that would have made me go "yeah, sure, makes sense."

I think the way it should have gone was have Hayter voice Big Boss for Ground Zeroes, because it takes soon after Peace Walker, and then after he wakes up from his decade long coma in Phantom Pain...have Richard Doyle, who voiced Big Boss in MGS4, take over.

Unless Hideo Kojima has Keifer re-record all of Big Boss' dialogue and patch it into MGS4. At which point, that'd show commitment. And, it'll be absolute proof that he and the people at Konami have lost their goddamn minds.

Snake just isn't Snake without Hayter. That being said Keif is a excellent actor and doesn't deserve the oncoming hate that's gonna be thrown his way. I'm sure he'll deliver an admirable performance. I mean who knows maybe Hayter will play a young Snake but I doubt it, hearing this news bummed me out more then I thought it would though. I guess I was more attached to the franchise and its cast then I realized.

What the fu...g. That's weird, but I guess it could be cool. Yet another thing I'm conflicted about. While I had originally thought they were just planning something, now, I do believe this is true. If you watch the video, it does seem like Kiefer doing Snake, though I wonder why he was voicing Ishmael.

I love MGS and all, but you people getting outraged over this are out of your fucking minds.

In their defense Hayter did voice Big Boss in games where Boss was younger, but his game takes place in the 80's and Boss is almost 50. The only other time we saw a older than late 30's very early 40's boss was in Metal Gear Solid 4, where Big Boss was not voiced by Hayter. So while they are sorta the same guy like you said, and Hayter does voice Boss in other games... there is a precedent for Old Boss not being voiced by him.

That said it you aren't going to use Hayter it is going to be hard to top Keifer Sutherland. He is a great actor and I have no doubts that he will deliver.
