Killzone 2 Gets More Better-er This Week

A new patch is coming that explicitly addresses the analog controls in Guerilla's shooter.

Sony's got a gang of new and upcoming games to push at E3 next week, but at least somebody over there is still thinking about ways to improve yesterday's top-tier PlayStation 3 titles. Case in point, Killzone 2. Yeah, remember that game? February wasn't that long ago! For those of you still playing, Guerilla's shooter is getting a new patch this week.

Most interesting aspect of this patch? Further refinement of the game's occasionally maligned analog controls, which are getting a whole new "high precision" mode via this update that you can turn on or off. Quoth a Guerilla rep:

When this option is switched on, it makes the analog sticks more responsive to small movements. Turned off, the controls behave exactly as they did before the patch. It’s not a radical overhaul of the control system, so the layout and the ‘weight’ of the controls remain the same.

Still, a lot of us here at Guerrilla really enjoy the new High Precision option, so we’ve decided to switch it on by default for new players. Existing Killzone 2 players will have the option turned off by default after patching – we wouldn’t want to force a sudden change to the controls on you!


As someone who burned out on Killzone 2's campaign halfway through and would cite the controls as at least one reason why, I hope this will be enough to get me through the back half of the game's single-player portion. But then, I hope this new mode is even applicable to the campaign, come to think of it, since the rest of the update seems focused on matchmaking, game balance, and other issues that primarily affect multiplayer.

I think the sixaxis movement on the sniper is excellent and can be used to a player's advantage, just for tweaking your aim slightly to ensure a headshot. Spawn camping however, is the work of satan. The fps equivalent of people playing as Sagat.

Hey, maybe I'll finish the game now.
Usually you get used to the controls of a game over time, but I just got more and more frustrated with them
I wish they released a patch which gave Sev high heels too. I'm tired of staring at dudes nipples.

Imo the controls of kz2 aren't what made it less than what was promised, its the sheer fact the game is just boring as hell.  I bought it thinking 'man this will be insane!' 3 missions later I stopped playing, haven't touched it since.  A tweak to the feeling of the controls isn't going to make up for all the 'been there done that' strewn throughout the game.

For the record I think halo, gears and cod4 are equally as yawntastic, the shooter genre needs to go away for a while and come back when devs finally decide to be creative and innovative with it again.

you make it sound, like few people play that game. lots of people still play the game. looking forward to this new update. gotta check out the controls casue that has been bugging me the entire time. jsut doesn't feel right. too much COD4 is proably the reason.

Pumping? Have they been putting a lot of stuff out? I didn't really think so... Although I haven't been keeping up too much on how they have been supporting the game since release.

They should also update the demo, so I can see how this effects things. It was one thing that kinda bugged me, at least I think this is one.

But hey, while your at the controls, fix the "press and hold EVERY BUTTON/TRIGGER/BUMPER to shoot and aim from cover!" thing. Whihc is about the biggest breaking point for. In a cover based game, such things need to be streamlined more.

The problem with the controls was that there seemed to be a DeadZone on the analog sticks. For instance, you would have to move the analog stick about 15-20% in a  particular direction befor your input even began to be registered.

That was my only gripe with the controls hopefully they nailed it. :D

I'd like to see how this actually works before I pass judgment.  I know I'd like some finer precision in the game.  The other day I was playing online and when I tapped the analog stick to the left for a headshot, the reticule jumped passed his head to over his left shoulder. When I tapped it right, it returned to aiming over his right shoulder.  The scene did not end well for me.  I'm not saying the patch will make me any better a player, but removing some of my frustration will go a long way in keeping me interested in the franchise.

This has always been my number 1 problem with Killzone 2. No matter how hard I try to aim for what I want to hit, I always wind up a little off on either side and find it pretty maddening. Hopefully this patch will fix the issue and make me want to pick up the game again.

The controls weren't to bad, though I couldn't use the default settings. Sensitivity wasn't a problem though.

This is one of the best decisions I could possibly think of. When will people realize that the L2/R2 aren't "triggers"? R3 for aiming and R1 for firing is perfect.

The controls are definently subpar, the dead zone as it was put, was significant so hopefully this helps, also I fin the controls unresponsive in general, when I go from dead stop to an extreme as fast as I can, there is an EXTREMELY noticable delay before any movement whatsoever.  Still, for a multiplayer that sounded so badass I sold resistance 2, I find almost everything about it to feel cheap and unconnected, I might as well be playing vs CPU's......I want my RES2 back dammit.

Quake 2 was a dungeon shooter with very limited gameplay elements. Killzone 2 has huge open environments and gorgeous landscapes and contain very innovative gameplay (1st person cover) that adds to the fun of the game without actually changing it too much.

Quake 2 had stupid enemies, Killzone 2 has smart enemies.

No, your comparison is not good. Not even Quake 4 or Quake Wars are comparable to Killzone 2.

i personally like the controls for the single player campaign but they are hard to adjust to in multiplayer. after not playing for a few days i find myself taking 2-3 matches online to get used to them again. otherwise i think K2 is an amazing game and i'm really glad Guerilla is keeping up with the support. do we know when exactly this patch will be available? i checked this morning at 6 EST and it hadn't gone up yet.

Also I guess it is good to see they are upgrading the air support, they should do the same for the Turrets, itd be nice if either of them were an actual threat.  Also its not surprising people complain about getting owned, when so many of the classes are cheap.  Its pretty frustrating to be getting roid rocket launchered, 1 shot sniped and are running into proximity mines when all you start with is a relatively weak rifle with enough bullets to kill 1 person.

Thank god, I don't know if I'm alone in this but after playing this game since release I never got comfortable with the controls. I love the game and that didn't stop me from playing it but I always felt I could do a little better if it wasn't for the aiming.

You are sort of rewarded for teamwork, with the x1.5 bonus to score if your team wins.  Not directly though.

No, because it is impossible for halo 3 to be release for such a shit console, I think bungie would rather kill themselves then to see a class game on a shit console, by the way I use my ps3 as a toaster, it is so shit it can't make good toast well compaye to 360 toast, and don't get me start on wii toast it tastes like someone piss on it. BY the waiy I use my uther ps3 as a toilet, because it's full of shit already and when i try to eject a game, shit like little shit planet and metal shit solid cums out.

I think they've already done a stealth "noobification" of the controls in the previous patches.

I used to play with the x-axis sensitivity two notches above medium not I have to have both axis two notches below medium to regain the original feel.
