Killzone 3 Officially Announced

Jetpacks are the new Nolan North.

Unsurprisingly, the big boy Killzone series won't stop at two. This morning Sony Computer Entertainment's European wing confirmed the existence of Killzone 3, a Guerrilla Games-developed sequel to the original PS3-exclusive FPS. According to the official European release materials, the game will ship with Stereoscopic 3D and will feature "more vehicles, explosive high-powered weapons, and a vicious close-combat system."

It's also set to be a direct sequel, kicking off right where the previous title left me waiting for resolution (and a cure for end boss frustration). As told by the press release, after the big baddies' death, a nuclear bomb is detonated in the Helghan capital. This puts a stop to the ISA push, and more importantly, your chances of backup. It'll be just you (Sev) and company versus the evil, militant Helghast--sans a Pip-Boy and cute Vault apparel in Killzone 3.

This probably isn't the first time you've heard about this game. Killzone 3 has been rumored as a 2010 release since the dinosaurs started huffing cosmic smog. More recently, though, it was revealed that GamePro was set to feature the title in an upcoming issue of its gaming mag. As was leaked, yes, jetpacks will indeed have a place in the game. And do look forward to thrusting around in bigger levels. The Euro press release boasts that the environments in Killzone 3--which will apparently be a digital smorgasbord of exotic locations ranging from snow, to jungle, to nuclear wasteland--will be ten times larger than the ones in Killzone 2.

The US PlayStation blog threw out a couple of screenshots for the newly announced game this afternoon. As you can see, it's quite pretty.

No release date was mentioned, but again, Killzone 3 has been rumored as a possible 2010 release. You're ready for more, right?

Looks like Killzone

Amazing right Zach? I really liked 2 and can't wait to see what they do the second time around. Especially with regards to MP.

Posted by TurboMan

Hated the single player for the last Killzone, Multiplayer was pretty awesome though.

Sony taking a que from Activision and Microsoft and is going to drive their gravy train FPS franchise straight into the ground.  Have fun making millions until you cross the line and everybody suddenly hates you for being popular.

Damn you Rico, why did you have to kill off the best character?

Got to say, aslong as they dont make sacrifices for the silly 3D, i'm going to be pretty excited for this.

Looks alot like lost planet.

I just hope they fixed that stomach POV. Fucking annoying in an otherwise spectacular looking game.

Oh my, yet another new staff member.  GB is really expanding.

Awesome can't wait to hear more.

No, jetpacks are the new flamethrowers.

what the fuck is going on in that third picture? I like it :P

Posted by kariyanine

I'm all for Killzone 3 as I really enjoyed the second one but I'm not sure about the jetpack thing.

Whooooooaaaa. Just looking at those pics made me cold.

Also - KILLZON3

Is it me or shouldn't Sony keep this under wraps for E3? I know, it's a little over two weeks, but they've got to surprise us with... something, right?

Well, according to that old Star Wars Bounty Hunter game, they're the same thing.

All that needs to be said really.

Edit: I did my research. Hey there.

Those pictures look like some Uncharted 2 skins DLC. Mostly because of the perspective of course.

Looks like its time to kick some Helghast Ass.

Nice to see some images, but I am really looking forward to seeing it in motion sometime during E3. The first game had a great campaign and the online kept me occupied for about three months (at the time a new record for me playing anything at all online besides StarCraft) so this is an instant buy for me.

Ha that was so totally awesome! You sound just like Jeff Gerstman, I bet you're super cool!

I'm really excited for the multiplayer for this one, Killzone 2 struck a really great formula with the class/badge system and the on-the-fly objectives. The single player is still an unknown quantity at this stage but KZ2 had a pretty solid experience (apart from the very last level) and I see some potential with you losing backup and fighting the helghast army alone.

Let me guess it's the snow? amirite? I mistake every snow level in a game for Lost Planet as well.

looks pretty

much like killzone 2

At this rate there'll be nothing left for E3.

Edited by Majkiboy

Lamest franchise name ever.
The name, and only the name made me not buying any of the previous games.
Switching the 2 for a 3 won't make any difference for this one.

Looks like Metal Gear solid

I was thinking the same thing, everyone seems to be blowing their load pre-E3.

Oh look, someone read into my 3 word comment a little too hard. What the hell does "sound like Jeff Gerstmann" mean?

Brad Nicholson?

Didn't you work for Destructoid?

Edited by Sharpshooter

Holy shit they are some fucked up looking jetpacks.
Posted by Dizzyhippos

Anybody else think that 3rd screen shot looks like something out of MGS

Posted by TheHBK

The only thing that was great about Killzone 2 was the idea of having a multiplayer match go in and out of different modes.  That was awesome.  Too bad the controls sucked.  Dont care if they are weighty or need to get used to, they make the game less fun.  Plus fuck Rico and Sev.  Hate those bitches.  What would be awesome would be if Rico turned out to be a traitor and a new protagonist named either John Connor, John McClane, John Matrix or John Rambo showed up and shot him in the face.  All within the first 30 seconds of the game.  Only then will I buy the 3rd one.

Hope it comes out on 360 or atleast PC

Edited by vidiot

I hope they hire a writer this time.

If not, then I can't wait to play another eight hours of shallow, yet beautiful sound and fury...
...Without any emotional or contextual plot of any kind, while I'm surrounded by a cast of completely interchangeable/boring/forgettable foul-mouthed husks. To consider them actual characters would be stretching it.

I'm glad to see the Jar-Jar Binks of Space Marines is back!
Oh, Rico. I hope you don't die in an amazing spectacle in this installment, you don't deserve such a send off. I hope you die by some stray bullet while playing, completely random and devoid of any fanfare.

Posted by zombie2011

They somehow managed to remove even more color from the game for the sequel.

Posted by Spiritof

If they can tell me right now that Rico dies in Killzone 3, I'm in.

I want to relish in the death of that SOBin' assclown.

Posted by Creamypies

I still need to play the second one...

Posted by chilipeppersman

please dont be another ps3 exclusive..........

Posted by Diamond
@chilipeppersman: I can guarantee it's PS3 exclusive.  The developer is 100% owned by Sony.

Same thing happened last year. ala PSPgo.

Those aren't jetpacks, those are gliders. Check out Warhawk for some real jetpacks. :D

Definitely excited for this one, I enjoyed Killzone 2 quite a bit and I hope they make meaningful improvements to the third game beyond simply adding in 3D technology :)

Posted by Milkman

A possible 2010 release date? I don't see that happening.
