Kinect Launches November 4 in North America

The pitch was made this afternoon.

Today, at its E3 press conference, Microsoft announced that Kinect is launching on November 4 in the North America alongside fifteen compatible games. No price details were announced, but some retailers are beginning to publicize speculation that the hands-free device will launch at $150.

No Caption Provided
Based on the games shown during the press conference, and the amount of  time devoted to the Kinect experience, are you guys sold on the hardware? Are you interested in purchasing the game this holiday? And, based on the conference, how much should Kinect cost?

Well we know those are just guesstimates since there is now no such thing as an "arcade" or "elite" as of the end of this week there is only one xbox and that's the new one.

@UncleBenny:  I fully agree - Microsoft wasn't sure if $150 was too much, so they leak that as a possible launch price to gauge reaction.  Reaction was mostly negative, so they don't announce the price at its unveiling - keep the positive momentum going.

To me, it's obvious they know $150 is too much, especially if they don't pack in games, but they can't get the price any cheaper, and they won't sell it for a loss.  Also, not announcing the price gives the hardware engineers a couple more months (at best) to possibly get the price down.

I'd guess that the $150 price point will be announced a month before launch - unless the engineers pull cold fusion out of their ass and can get the price down.

Personally, I'm still not convinced.  It's an technological wonder, no doubt, especially if lag is a non-issue, but I still think they need an Arcade + Kinect at $300-350.  With the new 360 model at $300, I don't think they'd have 2 SKUs that close in price.

I'm not really sure anymore. I've never actually tried it out myself, so for all I know it could be a ton of fun. But unless I have plenty of spare cash laying around when this is released (which I doubt), I'll most likely be passing. I'm not really digging the whole motion tracking stuff that developers are going crazy with this generation.

I couldn't give less of a fuck about this gimmick. I'm a big fat slob, because I like playing videogames and not running around like a freak or benchpressing stacks of weights all day. it's not like I wander around all week, talking about how I'd sure love to do some physical activity, but if only there were some sort of "game" to facilitate that.

150 seems reasonable if it came with a few games, otherwise, it seems kind of insanely expensive.

I've changed my mind. I will not be buying Kinect for $150 if each game also costs $60. 200+ dollars just to get started with a game? (at least according to gamestop's online pricing) Count me out. For $150 i want kinect sports and joy ride packed in at the very least. Joy ride was supposed to be a free avatar game in the first place.

exactly....they're smart waiting so long to tell you the price, because they'll build up your hype to the point where you want it regardless of the price.

Meh. I am totally underwhelmed. Some of the tech looks neat, but I don't see it being for any non-casual games. And I hate the name.

I'm pretty underwhelmed by the Kinect still.  Maybe once I've seen all 15 launch titles I'll be able to decide.

I find it strange that they didn't announce the price at E3, which makes me think that they wanted to avoid all the price based flame that may result... which makes me think that the Kinect may cost around the $150 that was being tossed around a couple months ago...

i kinda see where they were going though. Tried to mix connect with kinetics.  Makes for a better name than Natal though.

I think the biggest problem with Kinect is the fact that it's so radically different from the competition. Now, different ways of playing games are good and all, but I feel that the Sony Move is in the better position because it almost exactly mimics the Wii remote. Basically, anything the Wii does, Sony can ape with better graphics and 3D, which is sure to attract consumers. What can Kinect do in relation to everyone else, other than games solely developed for it? Would developers really be willing to develop for something that only makes up 1/3 of the potential market, as opposed to 2/3? It's simply too unique in that regard.

No real interest in this, my interest in all these motion cap stuff is very low, I actually WANT a controller. I enjoy the controller experience.  At least Move retains some of that, but I probably won't buy that either.

Just give me a good old gamepad, a couch, and some solid games and I am happy.  I move around enough in my daily life, gaming is my break from that.

Dun' care about Kinect/Natal/stupid name at all, the games they've announced suggest that the future applications for this thing amount to "Hey look you can wave your hands around like you're playing one of those Wii things except without the controller I don't know just wave your fuckin' hands and open your Zune app wheeeeeee it's a party!"

And that's kinda dumb.

Not only is it Wii 2.0, I have a good guess that games will still be 60 bones and probably not much better than Wii quality minus the HD. I already have a Wii and play the Xbox for the style of games already on it without this gimmick.

It just feels like Microsoft (and Sony) have said fuck it, Nintendo, you were right, there's money here. Microsoft paid way too much attention to this and not enough to actual games. I want games I control with a CONTROLLER damn it.

I'm not gunna lie, but every launch title they showed (and even the other 9 on the board at the end) was absolute shite. The only promise it even showed was the two 2011 titles, and even the Star Wars game looked cruddy.

The only way to sell me on Kinect is to show a killer app and announce an appropriate price.  What was shown so far wasn't enough but the tech did seem to have potential.  Only time will tell.

Weirdly, my GF ended up watching an old Kinect (Natal at the time) video and she said she thought it was awesome. She looked heartbroken when I told her the video was nothing but lies.

The only game that looks even slightly interesting to me is the dance game. The rest look like it should be packed in with the system.
So I guess that's a no for me.
It looks like it works better than I expected though.

Sorry Microsoft, but just not interested in Kinect. I watched the presentation today and far too many of the games came across as high definition version of Nintendo Wii games. People would call me a hard core gamer and none of these games appealed to me sadly.
