King Hippo Back in Effect in New Wii Punch-Out!!

Do you remember Little Mac's original title bout as fondly as we do? It seems Nintendo has got all our backs.

You just can't help but root for the guy.
Over the years, I've spent a lot of time thinking about why I and many other people remember the original Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! so fondly. There wasn't much to the gameplay at all--it was basically a matter of pattern memorization and recognition, knowing which way to dodge or block, and what punch to throw in response, based on the attack animation your opponent was displaying. It was also cheap as hell the closer you got to the end. I can count the number of people on one hand whom I know to even claim to have beaten Tyson, and I've never seen any of them actually do it.

On the upside, the cartoony, bigger-than-life opponents were all so darn memorable. Who could forget Glass Joe? King Hippo? Von Kaiser? Soda Popinski? And you had Mario as a referee! And most of all, the game--just like its scrawny little protagonist, Little Mac--had heart.

Nintendo's leveraging our inexplicable fondness for Little Mac and friends with a newly announced Punch-Out!! on the Wii, which will go a long way toward mollifying the vocal hardcore fan base that feels like Nintendo's forgetting about them. Clearly they are not forgetting, because someone made a point to add the correct number of exclamation points to the title there. Warm fuzzies!

Here, I'll let this new video do the talking.

Doesn't that vaguely mariachi-esque treatment of the original fight music get you totally jazzed? It really hits the nostalgia center in my brain. Cue big goofy grin, and some screens.

Glass Joe!
King Hippo!

Von Kaiser!
Glass Joe! Again!

Note that there are no facial tattoos nor ear-biting to be seen so far in this one, so let's safely assume Iron Mike is not involved. Given that assumption, who would you want to see as the title-match final opponent? Hopefully someone with a little more personality than that sad also-ran Mr. Dream.

Do this new Punch-Out!! and the also-just-announced Sin & Punishment 2 make you feel like Nintendo's back on the right track and doing right by its hardcore fans?

looks way better than what I could have ever expected.

But is it just going to be Wii Boxing with a Punch-Out!! theme?

Posted by kennybaese

Sin and Punishment 2 must have done really good on the VC for them to be making another one, but given those screenshots, it looks like the game has been in developments for a little while at least. Maybe they just released S & P on the VC to build hype.

And of course, who doesn't want more Punch-Out!! with the correct number of exclamation points?

Little Mac and the main character from S & P (whose name escapes me at the moment) both make an appearance in the newest Smash Bros as well as assist trophies.

Man, I love the graphical style of the game.

Sweet, 1 game per holiday season.

I can't wait for this one. LONG overdue for a new game considering both the original and the SNES game were incredible experiences.

Im really liking the art style of this game! LEts just hope the gameplay works well!

Yes!!

Posted by PLWolf

It will be mine, oh yes, it will be mine.
I may need to play some punch out to get ready for it. Although the VC version is sans Iron Mike, it will do to get me pumped for this.

I'm hoping it won't be the same patterns and characters as the first one.  Some of that footage was exactly how you took those dudes down, and playing the same game with new graphics isn't enough, I want to see more strategies, moves, characters and mechanics as well.

I'm hoping for at least all the old faces, some from the forgotten Super Punch Out!! (VC release?) and some all-new dudes to fight.  Mr. Dream is almost a certainty since they still need the asshole boss and they will never try to pursue another real boxer to include.  Yes, I beat Tyson back then, and so did several of my friends, we made it a pact to all beat him before moving on to any new games.  He's actually no harder than any of the other foes, he just doesn't let you make a mistake.  I remember many people thought he was intentionally unbeatable as part of his contract and gave up trying to beat him.

Sin and Punishment wasn't as great as it was made out to be, it was just the game that was going to be published here and didn't.  I tracked down an import cart and was unimpressed by the whole package.  And thanks to VC my "rare" cart became about as worthless as my time spent with it.

Now wheres my new Pro Wrestling?  I want to see an all-new Starman and King Slender.

They even did a new version of the music, aww it warms my heart.

ValiantGoat > Mike Tyson  :D

I can't stop watching the trailer. I'm freaking pumped.

Wow - I cannot wait for this! The character models look great and the art style looks cleverly re-imagined!

I might have to step up and buy a a wii soon ;)

Posted by durden77

Oh my God, it looks so beautiful. FINALLY!

It looks like they're really putting tons of detail into this, the art style is perfect. I f***ing love how right after Little Mac dodged Von Kaiser's punch and wound up his star punch, Von Kaisers face actually had that, "Oh shit" look on it.

Is it me or is that not little mac?

Fuckin A!   I get warm and fuzzie for old shit, thanks Brad!

Cool. It is a start for Nintendo to redeem themselves but I want to hear more about the announced Pikmin.

Posted by Foil1212

Knowing Nintendo, the final boss will be the mii.

Posted by Derekh1029

this looks really cool... hope its not wii boxing controls needs to be more responsive and feel like the old game. that was all the fun. also the rings are really dull i hope that changes to have a different style for the different opponents or at least different colors like in the original

Posted by SonicFire

Wow... does nintendo have some kind of allergic reaction to new IPs? I loved Punch Out for both the NES and the SNES, but come on, at least try to make the series something new...

Posted by Elazul

Much as I loved the original Punch-Out back in the day, I just don't think that what just looks like a 3d remake can be worth anything close to full retail price.

The day I put my Wii on e-bay I see this.  Great...

Posted by Bad_JuJu

Finally, something to look forward to on my neglected Wii.

Posted by Sykosis

Nice flash back but I was hoping for something new.

Posted by ryanwho

New Mike is ten times the cartoon character old Mike was. Sucks he's not in this. But yeah, lacking him, an obvious ripoff of a Rocky villain is the way to go.

Posted by Rually

Sweet Jebus I'm stoked!! Hopefully the finished product isn't so dark and bleary in the background. I've been playing this a lot lately, love it!!!

Guessing there is no Mike Tyson at the end though.....

Miyamoto.

YESSS but im not seeing this at 50 dollars i see this coming to wiiware

Posted by Lev_Arris

Looks fun, this may make me play my Wii again.

Holy crap!! This is awesome I loved Mike Tysons Punch out way back when, I just hope they do screw around with the difficulty.

Almost makes me want to buy a Wii.

Posted by ArclightBorealis

I like the cel-shaded look. Glass Joe getting K.O'd in slow motion was awesome.

Posted by bcfish

Yes!!!!!  God I loved that game, and for the Wii?!  It's a match made in heaven!  Whoo-hoo!

Posted by msaeger

Looks good but I hope they are adding some new opponents I know how to beat all the old ones already.

Posted by Valdarez

Tyson hard?  Really?  Tyson had a very straight forward pattern to follow to beat him.  That one punch knock down sucked, but if you dodged that, he was pretty easy to take out.  I'm curious about this game.  The graphics don't look all that jazzy, is it a downloadable content game, or is it a regular game you have to purchase at the local game store?

Posted by John1912

I beat Tyson back in the day, was prob like 9-10 years old.

Posted by jyurakyumihawk

Is it gonna be Mr Dream again?Oh and is Mario still the ref?

2008: The year of the retro.

Posted by RenegadeSaint

The remixed theme sounds great.  I can't wait to play this one!

Wait....a Wii game I can actually get excited for?! Whoa.
