Kodu Coming June 30th

Remember Kodu? Yeah? No? Well, either way, it's coming out really soon.

With all the commotion surrounding Natal that stirred up during E3 , it's easy to forget about Kodu , Microsoft's game-creation experiment that debuted at CES earlier this year. The Microsoft Research team has apparently been quietly toiling away on Kodu, taking time to post a screenshot or two each week on the official blog . It was mentioned earlier this month on that very blog that the team was looking to launch at the "end of June," and today Xboxic (via Joystiq ) is reporting that Kodu will be available on the Xbox 360, through the Xbox Community Games section, on June 30th for a scant 400 Microsoft points (or $5 in AmericaBux.)

That seems pretty cheap for something that will ostensibly let you create your own game experiences with nothing but an Xbox 360 controller, which, along with the fact that it's being shoved out into the never-visited Community Games wasteland has me a little worried that Microsoft doesn't have a huge amount of faith in Kodu. If you don't recall what this whole Kodu thing is all about, check out this stage demo from CES 2009.

@AndrewB: True. Just today I was listening to an indy dev talking about how troublesome it is to get noticed, compounded greatly by the fact that even people who actively want their product can't find it. XBL needs to step up the community presence if they intend anything to be worthwhile on it, and you're right about that being especially critical to a game based on community participation.

I'll buy it for $5 but I can't imagine that you will be able to create anything that amazing with it. It is going to be hard to create with just a controller.

And it is a door to xbox live... you can share, maybe even sell your game if it is any good. So it's an interesting piece of software.

But for now it is too soon to really know the depth of the program.

So telling that is for kids and idiots it's foolish... nobody knows trully how and what you can do with it.

Bullshit, that's Milo wearing a wig. Ask if he did his homework and see his response.

Oh wow, forgot about this. Looks a little too simplistic to be a serious game-developing tool but can't argue with 5 bucks.

...Ya she wasn't programming.
Using a game editor is different than actually programming a game from scratch.

I'll have to pick it up and play with it when it comes out.

Actual 12 year old Girl.

LOL.

And i really think this could be awesome. It's just a really simple map editor with a visual path editor for programming, but it could do a lot of neat things.

@Damian: The problem is, the more people that actually know of the game's existence, the bigger the chance that some great content is going to be created for it. Granted, you could argue that the majority of the people who would create any meaningful content with this would probably be the ones that are following it, anyway, and will know where to look to get it. My concern is that, if Microsoft wanted this to be what it's supposed to be, a LittleBigPlanet "killer," or anything remotely as popular, then something as simple as bumping this game up to a full fledged Xbox Live Arcade game could help that out immensely; and hell, keeping it at that price will help make it sell like hotcakes.

I agree, It's pretty odd that they wouldn't pimp this a little more if it were any good. At GDC I thought it would be given a little more time to flesh itself out proper-like.
I'm still curious, though. A lot of people have a lot of good ideas, and can make really fun stuff with very little. So all this has to be is "very little", really.
It's not a big gamble at $5.

I've been pretty interested in this "game" for a while and I'll definitely drop $5 for it...that's a small price to pay for what potential can be found in Kodu.

You know what pisses me off? Not all countries, like mine (Singapore), are given access to Community Games and I actually really want to give them my money and get this game. Its fucking dumb.

I don't really see myself playing/using this ever because it seems way too simplistic and I foresee many micro-transaction-gamepack-additions in the future of Kodu.
