Konami Not Patching Silent Hill HD on Xbox 360 Because, Well, It's Hard

Technical complications blamed on why only the PS3's getting patched.

Yep.
Yep.

When Konami released the Silent Hill HD Collection back in March, what should have been a celebration of gaming horror classics, Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 3, instead produced a collective sigh, as fans mucked through the countless technical issues within.

These issues were far more pronounced on Xbox 360 than PlayStation 3, and not long ago Konami issued a patch attempting to smooth out the PlayStation 3 version. Now, we know why Konami didn't release an Xbox 360 patch then: they have no plans to ever.

Here's the full statement released by Konami this afternoon:

Today, Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc. announced that while a PlayStation®3 online title update for Silent Hill HD Collection has been deployed for download via PlayStation®Network, plans for an XBOX®360 title update have been cancelled due to technical issues and resources.

Understanding the issues some users are experiencing, KONAMI issued a title update for Silent Hill HD Collection (PS3), which fixed frame rate issues as well as audio-synching and other reported issues. KONAMI apologizes to any players who are continuing to experience these issues on the XBOX 360 sku.

I'd normally take out the registered trademark junk, but if Konami's not feeling up to it, neither am I.

When asked if Konami will be offering a refund program for Xbox 360 owners, the company pointed me towards its customer support website.

FYI I emailed Konami and they apologized and said if I bought the game new prior to 8/8/2012, I could exchange it for any game on this list. I'll be getting the Silent Hill HD Collection on PS3.

It probably cost 50 or 60 thousand of developer time to move this crap across to the two platforms, then it probably only made 20 or 30 thousand in sales after everyone's cut, then you have a platform it's free to patch on and one that isn't. You're not complete jerks so you still use a programmers time to fix the issues on one platform. I guess after that they didn't see the value in doing that AND paying 40 grand for the honour to patch the other platform.

Here's the real question though, how did it get onto the 360 in the first place with such bad bugs? Don't they have to jump through a thousand hoops in the first place, or is there only quality control for patches?

Yup, you cracked the code! Just a bunch of rampant fanboys around here! No gamers that care about the industry and how publishers treat their broken games post-release, but just a bunch of Xbox 360 fanboys whining about their game not being fixed as it should! Way to read between the lines.

This is Konami we're talking about here. A company that hasn't done a single thing competently in the last two years. Even the one legitimately good game they released, Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, was released on the same day as Modern Warfare 3. I would not be surprised to find out this company is run by chimps.

I typically avoid titles from most Japanese publishers/developers because overall the games they make seem to be too formulaic, but now it seems that some of them don't even bother to support their games when they have major bugs in them.

Konami never liked Microsoft to begin with. Racists.

It is more than just a little suspect that they only patch the version released on the Japanese system. A lot of Japanese devs really don't like the 360.

Also, this has got to be the lamest excuse not to patch a game ever.

This is one of the first realisations I have seen of my biggest fear during the current generation. Game companies no longer have to worry about getting games out the door working and of a high quality, and people accept it because, HEY PATCH IN THE WORKS.

Well guess what, there isn't one, they have your money, nyah nyah.

Disgusting, and I predict the first of many such cases.

Its a long dark road my friend. How long till patches become paid DLC?

@Skanker: And you are seriously underestimating the size of Konami's pocket.

The "its too costly and too hard to fix it on the 360 (but not on the PS3)" excuse can be understandable in the case of indie developers and rare occurring bugs like Fish, but from a company that makes a lot more than 40k for every game they sell, and a "game" that has serious, easily reproducible issues, its inexcusable.

At that point, one could also argue what is the point of working on a patch for one platform and not the others...

I can count the number of Konami games I own on a closed fist.

What a piece of shit company. Only thing they're mildly competent at is Bemani arcade games and slot machines. I'll rent or buy used if at all.

Only if you bought it before the announcement was made. They're not removing it - a broken product - from sale. If you don't follow publisher announcments you may not know, and buy it anyway.

Cynical.

This reminds me of when they decided not to patch the messed up inverted camera controls of Silent Hill Homecoming, bought that at Best Buy for $10 and found out why... Still haven't played it because of those controls, I like inverted and wont change for just 1 game!! I guess the Silent Hill fanbase isn't important enough. Glad Capcom treats the Resident evil fanbase better then this.

Maybe the HD collection didn't sell enough on 360 to warrant a fix in their eyes. Still, poor treatment of customers on Konami's part.

BREAKING NEWS!: They NEVER cared. Take stuff like KOTOR 2 that was shoved-out unfinished. I'd far rather live in a time where games can be fixed. Yes, it would be great if games where bug-free all of the time, but stuff like making a release date has HUGE implications on sales, and if there are no sales, then no company, and thus no games.

Oh yay, so it's ok to buy a game you really wanted and not be able to play it as long as they give you a totally different game for free...

My roommate owns this HD remake and it's complete fucking garbage, lazy garbage. I don't care if you get 50 free games. If you can't play the one you bought and wanted then it's not ok. It's bribery.

Finished Silent Hill 2, turned on 3. 3 definitely had a better time of it than 2. 3 actually looks pretty good. 2 has a lot of weird issues, the lighting isn't right, there's weird filters all over the screen, screen transitions take way too long considering the technology. All of those aren't present in 3, so I have to assume its because 2 was the one they didn't get the final code for.

What the hell is with Japanese companies (all companies, really) and not holding on to the gold, final masters? How fucking stupid do you have to be to just lose that shit, and then send unfinished code out for the remaster? You see it in the West, too, with EA (or more specifically, Paul Barnett) trying to find the last master for Command & Conquer. Stories from Japan of like old cardboard boxes kept in a storage locker somewhere that have the final code for old Sega games, or code printed onto paper. It's nuts. Thank fuck they seem to have things under control now. I'd hate to be in 2025 and get the Call of Duty dodecology and have MW1 not working properly because it's alpha code that they spent two weeks trying to patch up.

I want to play it but that inverted screw up is really keeping me away from that game. There are just way to many games that have inverted correctly implemented just to change for one game, I don't get it back in the 90's inverted was default! One day I might play it but until then the box will just keep gathering dust.... It'll probably just get a half fast cash in re-released on the next systems with the inverted fix and I'll make the mistake of buying that version just to have the audio be glitched like this HD collection.

I remember the original release of this game in graphic detail. I was working with a company called mmo-play.com and they somehow got their hands on an advanced copy. We were all huddled around the office taking turns running around the city. It was one of the first games to scare the crap out of me (Although Dino Crisis freaked me out pretty bad... I don't get it.. I can kill zombies in Resident Evil and not flinch, but add dinosaurs and I'm out, yo.) Anyway, I still love this game. One of the best shooter/horror games of all time. And the movie wasn't too horrible!
