Konami Not Patching Silent Hill HD on Xbox 360 Because, Well, It's Hard

Technical complications blamed on why only the PS3's getting patched.

Yep.
Yep.

When Konami released the Silent Hill HD Collection back in March, what should have been a celebration of gaming horror classics, Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 3, instead produced a collective sigh, as fans mucked through the countless technical issues within.

These issues were far more pronounced on Xbox 360 than PlayStation 3, and not long ago Konami issued a patch attempting to smooth out the PlayStation 3 version. Now, we know why Konami didn't release an Xbox 360 patch then: they have no plans to ever.

Here's the full statement released by Konami this afternoon:

Today, Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc. announced that while a PlayStation®3 online title update for Silent Hill HD Collection has been deployed for download via PlayStation®Network, plans for an XBOX®360 title update have been cancelled due to technical issues and resources.

Understanding the issues some users are experiencing, KONAMI issued a title update for Silent Hill HD Collection (PS3), which fixed frame rate issues as well as audio-synching and other reported issues. KONAMI apologizes to any players who are continuing to experience these issues on the XBOX 360 sku.

I'd normally take out the registered trademark junk, but if Konami's not feeling up to it, neither am I.

When asked if Konami will be offering a refund program for Xbox 360 owners, the company pointed me towards its customer support website.

Microsoft needs to seriously rethink its title update process and, really, the entire cert procedure, before giving us another console and eight more years of this bullshit.

Just a reminder to everyone that you have rights as consumers and if a product sold is defective then you have the right to demand a full refund. Don't accept this kind of thing if you got a glitchy game and held on because a patch was coming. If you are told you cannot get a refund then talk to your local equivalent of the Citizens Advice Bureaux about what rights you have to recourse based on being sold a faulty product. It's only because they think they can get away with it that Konami is doing this, make your voice heard by getting your money back and pointing to this reason if required to explain your return.

I'm so glad I skipped the HD collection and Downpour. Won't be giving Konami any money for anything Silent Hill related for a while. Metal Gear Solid is another matter :)

Unless they stuff it up of course, can't understand how the MGS HD collection came out so good and the SH HD so bad.

So it seems like with one guy publicly saying 'no patch' due to Microsoft's making it a challenge, that more may start following suit?

Microsoft better start stepping up their game, the 360 could very well be their PS2 if they don't.

I mean look at XBL, the value is so low right now compared to all the other options out there (PSN/Steam), don't get me wrong I like XBL but it is seeming less, and less worth paying for, and as someone who has paid for it for well over 7 years, I am not even paying for it right now.

Well, dip. I have no intention on buying them anyway because I've already got the ps2 versions, and SH3 doesn't have the original voice work so I'm perfectly fine in sticking with the originals. That's still some sucky news all the same, though. Have they even released that Downpour patch?

Would this be because of Microsoft's patching process? Like if it adds/changes certain stuff you're not allowed to distribute it as a patch or something?

Ah, it's too hard to be angry while looking at a picture of the dog ending. Why bother.

But I wonder if at some point in the future one of the closed gaming platforms could involve the community in patching buggy games. I mean, on the PC, if your game is fucked, it's the best place for official fixes. And it's just about the only place where the user can go in and fix the code themselves without breaking the law.

I didn't think wikis would work either, until they did. Vandals and cheaters exist, and do cause problems in open platforms, but overall they produce less content than constructive people.

Probably nothing like that will happen until game design gets even less technical.

Konami can fuck right off. I'd say I'll "never buy a Konami game again" but I already haven't for years now, so I guess I'll DOUBLE not buy them now. Yeah, that'll show 'em.

What's with all the people blaming this on Microsoft? Even if the patch costs are extreme, what, Konami doesn't have the resources to take care of it? Yeah, right. This is a large, large pile of fucking bullshit and it's squarely and solely due to Konami.

buy a PC then cuz PS3 owners have bethesda fucking them over too.

Then you have to worry about poor PC ports. It's a vicious cycle.

One, that's gotta be the greatest thumbnail image I've ever seen for an article anywhere. And two, who the fuck is in charge at Konami? They have made perhaps the most inept series of business decisions of any company over the last console generation.

Indeed, the PC's port of LA Noire was pretty shitty. Plus the whole no Red Dead Redemption thing. Still not sure why RDR "isn't viable" on the PC according to Rockstar. As much as I think competition is a good thing, I sometimes wish it was easier to just decide on one gaming platform.

Every game company seems to have cracked the code for updating their games over the past eight years. The only reason anyone is talking about it now is because it's the new hotness post-Fez.

I guess I have to ask, do you take the Konami video game company on their word no matter what?

Sounds more like a case of not caring rather then development issues.

I don't particulary like the 360, but it's usually the PS3 that developers complain about when it comes to development difficulty.

Regardless, it's been six years, any 3rd party developer worth their salt should know both these systems inside and out by this time in their life cycle. It's unexcusable and unfair to those that bought the game.

Looks like giving up on the Xbox as a useful gaming platform continues to be the best choice I made after buying it. Now I don't feel so bad about wasting that money, it proves to be more and more worthless as time goes on. Shame I bought the thing, I didn't expect Microsoft to try and fuck the consumer and developers every chance they get. Wish I had bought a better videocard for my PC instead. :/

That really sucks, the collection has been delayed so many times. To release a defective product and just say they can't do anything about it is unacceptable. I still have the discs for the original games but I feel bad Xbox owners. They should have the chance to play SH2 & SH3 as much I did.

So, what you're saying is- because of this one game, the Xbox is a useless platform? Bit of an overreaction, and towards the wrong people entirely; this is completely Konami's fault.

Wow that's really shitty. I have no interest those games, but when Bethesda has the same problem in reverse (issues on PS3, fine on 360) they aren't even going to release until Dawnguard works properly. I'm pretty sure Konami and Bluepoint issued one or more patches for the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection on both consoles, what's so difficult about doing it here?

Wow. Fucking great. I pre-ordered the 360 version, assuming I could catch up on what's arguably a total classic and what I get is a broken product that they're not willing to patch. That thing's going back and I sure as hell won't get the PS3 version. I might pirate the PS2 version though, who knows.

Keep in mind they've (konami) already released the game, and there's nothing to say they have to support their product post release at all. It's common sense that they should, if they fucked up, but they're not required to. What Bethesda is doing is smart in that regard, because they can still work on the game and get paid for it, as it hasn't been released yet on the PS3. There's a whole company side of things behind it where they have to figure out things like "OK, do we assign people to work on this game we've already released and people bought, and try to figure these problems out when we will get no profit from doing so?". Bethesda instead is just polishing the final product prior to release to avoid the issues from last time.

@Xeirus: Yeah. I don't really mean to completely shit on any console. I think each console has nice games for them... But in a perfect world I would go 100% PC gaming all the time. It's just a shame that nearly the entire world of video game development sees PC gaming as a third class citizen.

Seriously, that's horrible! Thank God I still have Silent Hill 2 for the original Xbox and Silent Hill 3 for the PS2. I feel awful for the all of the people with 360's who bought this and are left with a buggy mess.

Konami let a busted version of the game collection go gold and get out the door. Unfortunately not as rare as it should be. The release quality of a game should be higher regardless whether or not day zero patches are the status quo.

In the other corner you have what is basically Microsoft's taxation of game patches and DLC. The idea was allegedly one of quality control, yet I've only seen these policies do more harm than good. Instead of sticking to their guns that acted to discourage poorly developed titles, wouldn't it be better to allow these types of patches gratis of releases on their system, and therefore elevate the brand as a whole?

"Technical issues and resources", whichever company is more at fault, still doesn't serve the customers that fuel their business. Build a better product and for heaven's sake let those people improve their product easily! Maybe there really were unsolvable technical issues. My bet's on money.

A more nuanced perspective, apart from the majority of knee-jerk reactions here. Please understand that Konami made a vile move - but it's Microsoft facilitating said vile move with a conceptually sound but ultimately broken system. It doesn't make Konami's decision amy less problematic, but the blame should be placed accordingly.

the whole argument about whether the 360 or the ps3 is more difficult to develop for is just stupid at this point. Both of these systems have been out for like 20 years. If you havent figured them out by now, you should just give up, stop making excuses, and start making flash games instead
