Layoffs Hit Obsidian Entertainment, Number Affected Unknown

As several projects wrap up, it's appearing some employees have been let go.

Rather quietly, Fallout: New Vegas and Dungeon Siege III developer Obsidian Entertainment laid off an unspecified number of staff last week.

Since finishing Fallout: New Vegas, Obsidian has continued to work with Bethesda Softworks on downloadable content for the title. It's likely the summer-bound Dungeon Siege III is nearing completion, so while layoffs are always unfortunate news, it's commonplace as projects begin to wrap up.

As initially noticed by Gamasutra, the Obsidian message boards have collected farewells, sign-offs and goodbyes from some developers affected by changes.

Fallout: New Vegas kept the franchise moving, while Bethesda moved onto other projects.
Fallout: New Vegas kept the franchise moving, while Bethesda moved onto other projects.

== TEASER =="11 years, nearly a dozen shipped titles, Designer, Lead, Producer, cancelled game, survived 7 layoffs, 8th got me," tweeted now-former producer Akil Hooper, part of the company for nearly four years. "Not a bad track record.

"Today marks my 3 year anniversary working at Obsidian Entertainment," said gameplay programmer Justin Reynard. "To my coworkers (and sadly the ones we've lost) you guys are amazing.<3"

"No longer work at Obsidian," said former quality assurance tester Ashley Better. "I guess this means I will have to start buying my own pens. [...] As a follow up, not going to go into details, it is fine no harsh feelings anywhere."

I've contacted Obsidian for further details on the layoffs, and will update this story if I hear back.

That's sad to hear.

I doubt most of the bugs in Fallout New Vegas were even their fault. They're working with the creaky Gamebryo engine, the one Morrowind used, and it's not like Fallout 3 itself was free of glitches. The publisher, (Bethesda) probably rushed FNV out the door before it was properly QA'd

I hope these are non-newsworthy planned layoffs, as Obsidian are the only major RPG developer outside of Europe not kicking the genre's corpse.

I kind of like Fallout 1 and I loved New Vegas, but I hated New Vegas (confused?), yeah, I had epic beef with the Xbox 360 version of New Vegas, the load times were obscene.

Hopefully it was their betatesters. Zing.

But yeah. FNV was a way more interesting game than Fallout 3 just like KOTOR 2 and Neverwinter 2. They're very good at specific things.

New Vegas was weird game for me. Every time I found something about it that I really liked something really negative came up and ruined it. Too many crashes and bugs and I didn't think that the Mojave Wasteland was as interesting as the Capital Wasteland.

Also, layoffs suck.

Well the good thing is, they can always be brought back if things pick up and turn for the better, I have faith in them and I'm sure we haven't seen the last of them by any stretch of the imagination, and for the record if you think FOnv was a horrid game you are insane, not saying it's the greatest but it's clearly not horrid It's above the middle of the pack just under great.

Depressing. I've pretty much loved everything Obsidian put out. Neverwinter Nights 2 and its expansions were great. Alpha Protocol was great. Fallout New Vegas was my game of the year. Ugh, who am I supposed to get quality RPGs from now?

That is really unfortunate. I love these guys even though I didn't play New Vegas and Alpha Protocol yet. The stuff they did before that was always interesting and unique if a bit janky at times. Hopefully they'll continue to make cool games for a while.

Okay - I liked New Vegas a lot. And it's always sad when someone loses their job.

Having said that - some people at Obsidian needed to be fired. Especially the "Quality Assurance" folks, because the last two Obsidian games were buggy as hell. I'm sorry, but whoever was the bug tester or QA tester for New Vegas needed to be fired, because he or she didn't do their damn job.

Obsidian are a very strange bunch - they have brilliant ideas, yet their execution is often incredibly flawed. Some people at Obsidian are very talented, and I hope they continue to make good games. But some people at Obsidian (probably the ENTIRE QA STAFF) are just awful at their job. New Vegas was a great game in terms of story, voice acting, music and setting. It was, however, unforgivably buggy and laggy and messed up.

As sad as it is - perhaps there's a silver lining here. Perhaps they can finally hire some QA people who can do their damn job. I know, I know, QA is a hard job. But other companies can make largely bug-free games! Someone at Obsidian clearly wasn't doing their job. I just hope it was that person who got fired.

I skipped new vegas.  it didnt look as interesting as fallout 3 and people said it was even buggier (!)

Alpha Protocol was pretty fun though.  Sure, it is riddled with amateur-hour scripting bugs and a kinda sloppy combat system, but fun all the way through.

I think Obsidian should have just been given the Fallout license full time.  Bethesda Game Studios is great at making long cave networks and vast dungeons to explore, Obsidian is capable of making an incredibly branching story offering tons of player choice.  That is Fallout.  Vast dungeons are Elder Scrolls.

It's sad but it seemed inevitable. As great as they were at a lot of aspects, they've also been pretty consistently buggy. It's always felt like it was going to catch up with them sooner of later.

Hopefully they can get jobs elsewhere, maybe go onto bigger and better things.

@Mumrik:  Instead of taking it off your list because it's made by Obsidian, maybe you should wait for some reviews and see if it's any good. I'm having doubts about F.E.A.R. 3 being made by Day 1 Studios instead of Monolith, but I'm not gonna write it off until I see a final product. I'd be happy to have my fears proven unwarranted.

@Delta_Ass:  I've yet to play an Obsidian game that I didn't enjoy. Are they buggy as all hell? Yes. But I enjoyed both KotOR 2 and NWN2 more than their BioWare forebears, and while I'm only about halfway through New Vegas, it's so far been on par with Fallout 3 -- better in a lot of little ways, really.

Haven't played Alpha Protocol, but the actual RPG side of it has me really interested, even if the combat is crap. It's likely to be my least favorite Obsidian game just because it clearly strayed way outside their comfort zone, but I won't fault them for wanting to try something different.

The creative side of Obsidian is ace, in my opinion -- they just really need to get a team that can keep up the same level of technical polish that their contemporaries maintain.

A shame to hear, but it is a unfortunate part of reality in this day and age.

I still have my fingers crossed for a Fallout: New Vegas GOTY Edition with all DLC included and perhaps some changes to address the bugs and glitching that hampered this great game.

There are aspects of KotOR 2 that are absolutely brilliant, better than in any other game I've played, but yeah their failure to make a game that isn't broken is catching up with them and I can't say I'm sad for them. I've wasted enough money on their broken pieces of shit. Their technical staff should've been fired ages ago.

Hard to feel too concerned about any of these anymore tbh, it just seems to be how the industry operates nowadays.  Are these guys staying out of work for extended periods of time, or are they just getting picked up by some other project in a different part of the cycle?  I would assume it's the latter given the quantity and quality of games still coming out.

Hopefully Obsidian have at least one project in the pipe for after Dungeon Siege 3 comes out (any news on that?).  I can't imagine they're in too much trouble given the success of New Vegas.

Personally, I've enjoyed every game they've put out, and DS3 looks alright too.  One of my favourite devs for sure.

While it's probably partially because of DS3 completion, I have to imagine the failure of Alpha Protocol and death of the Aliens RPG must also have a hand in it. Here's hoping all those let go can land on their feet quickly.

Really hate to hear that, especially after New Vegas doing so well. The only weird thing was the lack of downloadable content information after Dead Money was out, they left it too long and the buzz around the game has pretty much burned out now.

Obsidian =/= Black Isle.

The main story/creative force is at Obsidian, yes, but it's become quite clear since the destruction of Interplay and the formation of Obsidian that all of their QA department as well as their most talented designers flew the coup. Trying to defend an Obsidian game is like telling people you like having your balls stepped on. Sure, I imagine there is a select niche that enjoys that sort of retarded behaviour, but the vast majority don't.

AP and New Vegas are sterling examples of great ideas wrapped up in absolutely terrible execution. AP was an aimless project that had a severe identity crisis while New Vegas suffered from the tried and true Obsidian way. That is to make a compelling environment and story and then see how much they can break the game around it.

That's a bummer. Even though I think Obsidian isn't an especially amazing game developer (I think NWN 2 is alright and New Vegas is genuinely better than Fallout 3. KotOR 2 and Alpha Protocol can go die in a hole), people losing jobs is always bad. Hopefully Dungeon Siege III will do well for them, even though exactly 0% of that game interests me.

On consoles it is still janky, PC wise you can just brute force that shit with a beast of a computer and get it to work.
