LeBron James And The Changing NBA Multiplayer Dynamic

What does the Miami Heat's new dominance mean for NBA 2K11?

A new power triangle means new power rankings for NBA 2K11, as the Miami Heat are sure to slide up the boards with its oncoming free agent class starring Dwayne Wade, Chris Bosh, and "King" LeBron James. But will users respond to the inevitable climb, too? I'm guessing they will, though, I could be wrong.

With a theory in mind, I asked NBA 2K representative Chris Snyder for information on NBA 2K10's most-used teams in multiplayer. He responded with some data that isn't helping me feel better about my suspicions.

The top five teams used in NBA 2K10's multiplayer are, in order, according to Snyder: the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Los Angeles Lakers, the Denver Nuggets, the Orlando Magic, and the Boston Celtics

 Check out that leg!
 Check out that leg!

== TEASER ==The theory? It's simple: with its new trifecta of talent, the Miami Heat will become the dominant team picked in this year's version of the game. Unfortunately, with the game not yet out in press or consumers' hands, this is impossible to prove. I thought existing rankings would shed some light on the issue, but what Snyder shared with me doesn't actually make me feel confident in my theory.

Here are the two things I observed from the data, the latter of which has me scratching my head.

First: the Shaq-Lebron tandem in Cleveland was enough to push the Cavs over the edge, beating out even recent title holders like the Lakers. If Lebron had that much of an impact for Cleveland, a team with a bad supporting cast, surely he would push Miami, a team that made the top ten last year, over the edge in 2K11.

Second: But wait! Interestingly, the Boston Celtics, a team with their own trifecta composed of NBA greats Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, and Kevin Garnett placed fifth. It's a spot lower than even the Denver Nuggets, who don't have near the star power. Could this mean that there's a chance Miami won't place first and beat the obvious? Maybe.

Snyder reckons, like I do, that the Heat will move to number one on the list when 2K11 hits later this year, but he did add that free agency isn't over. Other teams, like the New York Knicks, might have some surprises up their sleeves. Regardless, the Celtics tell me that this isn't such a cut-and-dried thing, and the Heat, even with new star power, might not have that much of an impact.

@AgentJ:  more like y'all didn't care enough to show up for games and support the team enough until it was too late. y'all had your chance to make things right and now the team is better off with fans here who actually sell out the games and show deep strong support. y'all need to stop cryin about it.

Yeah, you don't have a clue. Why don't you take a gander at this film and get one.
Its not our fault that the owner and league checked off on an arena rebuild that was "out of date" in 5 years.
Attendance was at capacity even through most of the decade of losers. It was only when your boy sold off all our players and gave people no hope and no team to watch that people left.
And even if we were crying, we have full right to. WE HAD 40 YEARS OF HISTORY. Of course, OKC wouldn't know anything about that.

I hope that after 40 years some town in Nebraska or Alabama steals your team, lies about being "possessed" to keep the team in your city, so that you know what it feels like. But the way the NBA is now, you probably won't even have your team that long.
Watch the movie on the other side of that link, and you will have a FRACTION of an idea of how much this town cares about their team. Hell, they sold out KeyArena for SEATTLE STORM games this year. WNBA. Then you can tell us to forget about it.

And act like you have a NBA championship ring that you never earned? And pretend that Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp were among your greatest players in team history?

@AgentJ:  y'all can keep your ring. y'all can keep your players from the past. y'all can keep the past memories of what was. the thunder are here in the present and the future going forward. we don't want gary and shawn. we have KD and westbrook. we may not have a ring yet but every year we get closer to one. yea, i say we like i'm on the team but the fans are a part of the team and we are all together to support the guys all the way every day. keep your history. i'll gladly give that up to have the present and future of the oklahoma city thunder. we're only gonna get better from here so get your popcorn cuz KD and the team are gonna be puttin on a good show day in and night out this season.

@suikoden352: Except you took all that with you too. You ripped out OUR HISTORY, OUR VICTORIES, and we can never get them back. Thats why there is ill-will towards the city, and not just the owners and the league.

Oh, and don't expect me to watch. I haven't seen a single game since the NBA died in Seattle.

you are a serious dumb ass. we don't want your victories or your history. we have said that since day one. even the team has said that. we may have the records but we can always just give it back because honestly it's no good to us since the team is called the thunder. not the sonics. they came here with 0 wins and 0 loses. a new history to write of their own and new goals to achieve. if you don't keep up with the NBA then why even argue with me? i don't expect you to do anything. i would like it if you would just drop all this and just quit your bitching. if y'all wanna hate on Oklahoma then go ahead. we honestly don't care.  i don't care for the spurs but does anyone in san antonio care about the haters? no. not one bit. i'm done arguing with you because i have way better things i could be putting my time towards so if you want to hate then go ahead. i don't care and neither does the rest of Oklahoma. you are acting like the Cleveland fans when lebron left for Miami. he didn't owe them anything. he did what he saw was good for him and his family. the sonics got sold because they weren't getting the money they needed or the fans they needed. they saw potential here and we saw the opportunity and we took it. sorry if it went down in surprise to y'all but what is done is done and if you don't like it then go tell david stern and tell him to give ya'll another team. i don't care for arguing with you anymore. say that you won if you want. i don't care anymore. i am out.

@suikoden352: There's absolutely no reason for instigating problems and/or namecalling.

@AgentJ: You can't do much about a team that was moved because the federal and local governments both denied funding for updates on an arena, even before they were bought out by Bennett.

In the end, both of you are arguing something pointless.  The team is moved, nothing can be done about that, and moreover, I would say that letting 40 years of basketball history die because you've got a beef about it being moved to a different city and state...is kind of doofy.  The Tennessee Titans used to be the Houston Oilers.  A lot of people were butt-hurt about it, but in the end, look at what happened to the Titans - they went on to being a pretty great team when they moved, even going so far as to FINALLY SEEING A SUPER BOWL.  If anything, I would expect that a fan of the Supersonics would want to see the guys that brought them a ton of memories creating new ones for Oklahoma City.

It's all politics, but in the end, enjoy sports for the love of the game, not for all the bullshit trading of players and teams moving to different cities.

@jakob187:  i'm not the one instigating problems but i'm sorry if you see it that way. i stand by my words and also what i called him but if it offended you then i'm sorry for that was well but i still stand by them. i'm not the one that started the argument if you go back but i'm not gonna get into this anymore. it's stupid and pointless to reason. i've said what i'm gonna say. i'm off to do better things with my time.

@suikoden352: Again, you're talking out of your ass. The team got the fans they needed (till your boy Bennett pulled a "Major League" and got rid of all the players the fans were attached to with the purpose of losing and alienating the fanbase). It's not the fans fault that the stadium was designed small when it was remodeled in 95-96. I would expect nothing less than OK supporting the team because then the move would have been a complete waste of one of the best basketball environments in the country. Talk to any NBA player that played a playoff game in Seattle, and they'll tell you about a place they never want to have to play again. The intimacy of the stadium combined with some of the loudest fans in sports made for a very special place to play the game.
I can't possibly "win", because nothing I can say will suddenly cause Bennett to have a heart attack and force a move back to Seattle. But seriously, I can't imagine supporting a team that moved in from somewhere else (and I include any possible future NBA team in that). I guess major league cities just don't have to experience that, getting expansion teams instead.

Edit: If you guys don't care about the Sonics wins and losses, than why did you take them with you? Why didn't you leave them here like you did with the Storm? Why don't you say anything when ESPN or NBA.com runs a special on the "best Thunder players in history" and it includes guys like Payton?

The team had just gotten a remodel of the arena 10-15 years prior. The commissioner called it a fantastic place to play. Frankly, I love that building. It really was a great basketball arena.
Do you really think people in Houston were ever rooting for the Titans?
Do you think people in Baltimore cheered for the Indianapolis Colts?
What about the Rams and Raiders after they left LA?
It doesn't work that way, especially in a place like Seattle, where the fans put everything out there with their teams. The city has the loudest football, basketball, and soccer venues in the United States because of how much the teams mean to them.
If someone stole your wedding ring, would you just hope that whoever stole it enjoyed it? It doesn't make any sense.
