Left 4 Dead 2 Mac Hits October 5, Left 4 Dead Around Halloween

Nothing says Halloween like zombies and guns.

Start warming up your Magic Mouses, gentlemen (or alternatively, find a two-button mouse). Valve's Mac port of Left 4 Dead 2 is fast approaching, Valve has said in a recent, though somewhat hidden update, tucked under details about The Sacrifice DLC (via Joystiq). The studio plans to release the Mac version of the game on October 5 alongside the aforementioned DLC.

Mac owners who purchase the zombie shooter, or check it out for free because they already own the PC version, will have access to native versions of all the previous content released for the game. This is a list that includes The Passing DLC and the No Mercy campaign, which is packaged within The Sacrifice.

Left 4 Dead 2 is cool and all, but where's the first game, you ask? Valve has apologized for its absence, but has added in this same announcement that it hopes to get a Mac version of the original game out the door "in time to celebrate Halloween." Like L4D2, it's being promised that all previously released DLC and updates will be available day and date with that port as well.

Great news for Mac owners. Hopefully the trend of cross-platform gaming will continue and even take hold on open source platforms like Linux, etc.

Kudos to Valve for being thorough with the DLC as well.

Very awesome, hopefully my macbook pro can run it fine.

I hate Macs

Dunno why you'd want to play this without other people in the room (i.e. splitscreen) but this is still cool.

Posted by stalefishies

Releasing the sequel before the original does not sound like a sound business strategy.

Still though, always nice to see games coming to more platforms.

Good news indeed. A bit odd as to why Left 4 Dead would be delayed til Halloween, but still least Mac owners will enjoy some good ol Zombie Killing

Cool beans, I'll probably be buying this.

Is this really news worthy?

Posted by aurahack

So, not to be an uninformed noob, but are the following statements correct?

1. If I buy a PC DVD at EB and tie that game to my Steam account, I can then download it on my Macbook Pro?

2. When I am playing on my MBP, I can play with my friends who own the game on Windows?

Posted by skadbob

I've been waiting for this announcement. Thanks!

You can turn the mouse into one under system preferences...

Good news. Oh and the Magic Mouse has two buttons, it just looks like one. Maybe you were thinking of the Magic Trackpad?

@aurahack: Those should both be true.

If you own a Mac, just use boot camp and run Windows. You still get L4D and you get to use a better operating system.

I know with Valve games, they tie into your Steam account so,
1 yes, if you buy a physical copy of a Valve game you can still download whatever version, Mac or PC, you want.
2, i'm not so sure about that but i don't know...i think if you're playing the mac version you can only play with other mac people but you'll have to leave that question to someone who knows better.

Is this a joke? Windows is terrible compared. I bought Windows 7 for gaming under bootcamp, and I never go over unless I want to game.

Nice, Steam on Mac has gotten me back into PC gaming.  They are starting to build a pretty nice catalog.

1.) Yeah ... Valve made kinda a big deal out of that, any Valve game you own and is tied to your steam account can be downloaded on either the PC or Mac as often as you want (well, as long as the Mac-Version is available).

2.) There is no barrier between Mac and PC players in Multiplayer, just like in TF2 you can play with everyone who owns L4D2 on PC and/or Mac.

Congrats to the Mac owners out there!

My roomate is happy

.......Why wouldn't it be? People have Macs. Everyone at Whiskey has Macs. Just because you don't doesn't mean it isn't news.

Its a year old game and no other mac releases on steam have had this treatment.

Just ignore him, everyone else does.

So L4D2 should be hitting around late October, and we'll be lucky to see L4D before christmas, right? This is Valve Time we're talking about.

Windows is a much better OS. And it doesn't look like the garbage that Apple thinks looks nice. Stuff like glossy buttons on every centimeter of the screen and aluminum web browser/application designs don't look good.

And the hardware all has ONE look.  Oh and Windows has that whole gaming thing going for it...I suppose 10 titles on the Mac are good enough.
Posted by Microshock

Great so the 3 mac owners who wanted to play Valve's worst series can now play it!

Posted by DorkyMohr

While I think it's a great initiative by Valve, I don't see many other companies on steam taking the same leap. If you look at the mac section there's the valve stuff, a couple good games, and then a bunch of crap.

Team Fortress did... and Half Life 2...
Edited by medacris

Why does it matter what OS you're using, as long as you're killing zombies?

I'm really excited for this, although I think I'll wait to buy the combo pack of both games when the original's released on Mac. All the games I have so far work pretty well, so I'm assuming L4D will, too.

Yeah, bro, sick burn, amirite?
Edited by MisterMouse

wonderful news! also I wish we were past all of the "this OS is better than that OS" because in reality they are both similar and though owe key developments to each other. I guess a better way to frame is is to put it in a racial context... years ago ( a lot of years) people (namely a single race) believed they were the superior race... and yeah I take it I dont need to go any further because you get the idea.

Wooooooooo can't wait to get these, does anyone think when they release l4d1 that they'll come out with the two games in one bundle that's cheaper?

Posted by MetalMoog

These aren't up on Steam yet.  Hopefully the Mac version and the Sacrifice DLC will be released sometime today.

I love the magic mouse, and magic track pad, but I have a mouse I break out for gaming.
