Legendary Halo: Reach Bundle To Include Campaign Commentary

From beginning to end, owners of the 150-dollar bundle can rock out with some devs in their ears.

Unlike last time, Halo: Reach's Legendary special edition bundle doesn't come with a helmet fit for a feline. Instead, it will ship with a 10-pound, 10-inch-tall McFarlane Toys diorama of Noble Team--and that's in addition to exclusive online unlocks, a physical diary, and a smattering of documents that explores the game's fiction. But if that's not enough to get you to smack 150 dollars down on a retailer's counter with confidence, Bungie is probably hoping a bonus in-game campaign commentary track might do the trick.

Bungie busted out the news of the track on its official website earlier last week, and even dropped a few specifics about. According to the studio, around two hours of spoiler-filled audio were recorded for the track, most of it dealing with "unrevealed aspects" of Reach's production. The game's creative director Marcus Lehto, audio director Marty O'Donnell, cinematics and story lead Lee Wilson, and effects lead Steve Scott will be featured.

And for you commentary hounds out there, apparently all these guys were recorded while chilling in the same room at the same time, unlike some of the lousier DVD commentaries you may have heard.

No Caption Provided

== TEASER ==Also, if you were wondering, the seemingly short run time of the track is the end result of Bungie's "judicious editing" that is being said to deliver audio only during the game's "most impactful moments." This is also purportedly Bungie's "final word" on the series, which makes sense considering this is in fact the studio's final Halo game.

The full blurb from the website:

Go inside Bungie and get direct access to the team that created the franchise as they play through their last and most ambitious entry in series, Halo: Reach. To celebrate the event – and to commemorate those fans who picked up the Legendary Edition of Halo: Reach – Creative Director, Marcus Lehto, Audio Director and Composer, Marty O’Donnell, Cinematics and Story Lead, Lee Wilson, and Effects Lead, Steve Scott sit down together to deliver two full hours of exclusive, behind-the-scenes campaign commentary covering unrevealed aspects of Halo: Reach’s production. From concept to cutting room floor, this last look back is the final word on Halo: Reach’s development, straight from the team that built the game.

The Halo: Reach Legendary edition is currently sold-out on GameStop.com, but it's still available in stores, as well as some online retailers like Amazon.com. As is usual with these bundles, Halo: Reach LE is a limited-release thing, so, if in-game commentary or a wicked diorama are things you'd like to have, you'd probably be doing yourself a favor by pre-ordering the bundle sooner than later.

Two hours doesn't seem like a whole lot. Still, if I was a rabid Halo fan I'd be happy to listen to it.

Now that's something I'd hypothetically buy a special edition of a game for.

Not worth the extra money but I wish they put it in every version. It will probably be up on YouTube at some point so I might see it there.

That actually sounds somewhat cool, but my interest in halo has become such that I really don't want to get any version of reach.

The commentary is really tempting as I do like the Universe but I don't think the commentary is worth 90 bucks.

Valve does commentary tracks for free, find this to be a kind of bullshit incentive even though I'm really interested in what they have to say.

Score, this should be fun.  I've never heard of a commentary for a video game before like this.  It seems to frickin' obvious now that I read about it.

I'm a sucker for Super-Special-Uber Editions and can't wait to pick up this 10 ton monstrosity next week.  (next week right?)

I look upon multiple editions of games insouciantly. If it's a great game, it really doesn't matter which version I get. Dust magnets and commentaries that I will listen to once, not a big enough reason for the upscale price point.

I can't spend 150 dollars on one game, there are many many good games out there that I don't own and many more that have yet to come out. While it is very tempting with everything they are packing together in this legendary edition of the game, I'm going with the normal edition and like what happens with everything video game related I'll be able to listen to the commentary on youtube videos.

Eh... I am not going to get burned again.  The $120 'Cat Helmet' edition of Halo 3 was totally not worth it.

Sad they are only including the commentary in the Legendary Edition, a lot of people interested in hearing are going to miss out because they don't care to buy that version.  Oh well.

I did pre-order the Legendary Edition because I am a sucker, but I have been pretty satisfied with previous Halo collector's editions. I was a bit bummed with this one because unlike the previous ones this doesn't come with a Bonus DVD (or Two!) and I am a sucker for well produced behind the scenes material. The Halo behind the scenes stuff has gone deeper than I would expect, your not just paying to watch a PR reel of the game you already own, they actually get into the technical design of the engine and the level design / gameplay design.

The lack of any bonus footage (Unless it is an unlock on every disk like many Sony published games) felt kind of weird for them to be going out on their final Halo game without the complete package. But this commentary mode alleviates those concerns a bit.

Not sure why the article writer seems to think this is some kind of in-game commentary. It makes it (somewhat) clear that this is a long 2 hour+ video, not a in-game thang.

I say that because of the paragraph immediately following the quote in the article:

"The bonus content covers a full campaign play-through, from start to finish, judiciously edited to excise the downtime and deliver only the most impactful moments. The end result is a potent combination of intense campaign gameplay fused with insightful, and dare I say whimsical, commentary from some of our studio’s brightest minds (and Marty, too!)."

I got the Halo 3 Legendary Edition and kind of love my Spartan Helmet.  If I was not getting the Reach 360, I would probably be plopping money down on this but I can't justify 2 copies of the game and $550 on Halo next week.

Oh yeah, reading the source it is pretty obvious that it is almost assuredly a video, not a Riddick / Valve / Alan Wake style commentary system. This sounds similar to the Halo 1 / Halo 2 cinematics with commentary DVD included with Halo 3 Legendary. Except this sounds like it will probably have a lot of gameplay footage too, even though they talked about a lot of other stuff besides the cinematics during the last DVD (like the Underwater Tank level and why Halo 2 ended so abruptly). This does bring to question if there is a bonus disc with other stuff they haven't announced, otherwise where are they storing this video?

@Cybexx: Nah, the commentary is a special download that comes with the Legendary edition (they've mentioned as such in the past).  That makes me hopeful that that they might sell/make it available sometime after release.

Yeah, sorry Bungie...its still not worth $150.  I'm getting the middle edition, as usual.  I will say, it is better than the Halo 3 special edition.
