Level 5 Planning Professor Layton’s Last Adventure

While the rest of the world waits for Miracle Mask, Japan moves forward.

While it’s really hard to imagine Level 5 completely giving up on Professor Layton, the company claimed in last night’s Nintendo Direct event that Professor Layton and the Super Civilization A will be his last outing.

Of course, everyone outside of Japan is still waiting for Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, the series’ debut on 3DS. That game finally arrives over here on October 28.

There will be puzzles, puzzles, and more puzzles. And while it might take a while, chances are, like the other Layton games, Professor Layton and the Super Civilization A will come out here, too.

As for now, it’s scheduled for “2013” in Japan.

I'd love a Professor Layton collection detailing the whole saga with spruced up versions of all the games with some ace Level 5 animated cutscenes for the WiiU.

That'd be a killer app!

Too bad to hear this as the games are quite fun from what little I played of them, too bad they never put out a collection of these out on the Wii as I'd definitely buy that to get more Layton that I didn't play on the DS.

I liked a lot of the new characters they added in Last Specter. So it will be nice to have them in a post Unwound Future story (since that was the last one chronologically).

This game is still going to take place before Unwound Future. It's the third in their 'prequel trilogy'.

Probably a good idea to retire the series, though it is a bummer. Based on how GORGEOUS they did the first 3DS title, this one should be a treat for the eyes as well.

@LiquidPrince: He thought there were more. And depending on how you look at it, there are. I am providing the information, and he can determine whether or not that qualifies as more based on his own criteria.

Haven't been following the last 2 or 3 Layton games. Wish they came out fast in the US.

There's only four Layton games out. Meaning you only played the first, possibly the second?

yeah I played the first 2. There have really only been 4? I feel like there are more.

There are five. The fifth one will be receiving its English release this year. Oh, and there was a Japanes mobile phone game released in 2008, but you probably didn't know about that.

I was talking about the ones already released. He obviously wouldn't have played Mask of Miracle yet.

I really, really like the characters and the dialogue of this series, but the puzzles felt like they were ripped from the back of an unkempt assortment of riddle books from way back when. Have the Layton games improved in -- hate to say this, for lack of a better word -- quality in terms of puzzles?

Again, I love the games from an outsider's point of view, and I'm excited for Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney (if that ever gets anywhere), I just wonder if I should start from the second PL entry (played the first up to a certain point) or if I should give this 3DS iteration a chance, though I'll be lost in terms of the story.

I wish Level 5 would get back to Dark Cloud games. No disrespect to the Layton series, but another Dark Cloud sequel is overdue.

Hmm.. I suppose. The story in the first one just didn't do a lot for me. Maybe the other ones are better in that regard?

Amazing series. Not sure how many games are yet to come out, but at least they seem to be ending the series while the fire is still burning hot.

It will be the end of the prequel trilogy, but Professor Layton doesn't die at the end of Unwound Future (the end of the first trilogy).

I think I grew kind of tired of the series as it went on, here are my experiences with the first 4 games.

  1. Yeah this game is amazing, love everything about it, had to use a guide towards the end.
  2. This game is great, love the inclusion of more cutscenes and dialogue, used a guide in tough spots.
  3. This game was cool, used a guide whenever I got stuck.
  4. Not finished, used the guide for all puzzles.

I think it had the same effect that New Super Mario Bros has had, it's kind of the same thing over and over again with a different backdrop. I Used to get really excited about a new Proffessor Layton game, but now I muster a "Oh" I think if the series had ended at the third instalment i would think more of the series. I suppose level 5 must also think that others share my thoughts, or sales are dropping.

@DeF: Translations are almost never preferred. If I had gone with a translation, it wouldn't be the same one Patrick used. I don't think the fans have decided on a preferred translation yet. It's only been known for a few hours.

Duder, I made a page already. Doesn't seem to be indexed though.

You have to put content into the main body. A simple dot would do but "empty" pages for games don't show up in search. If you create a new page, just write a sentence in the main section or if there is literally zero info then just put a dot in there so it shows up in search.

Oh and also you made a name with the Japanese title. There is no official English title but it seems a translation is preferred in that case.

I opened a combine request in the delete & combine forums for you...

As much as I love the Layton series, there's only so much they can do with the format. I'd rather they ended the series and came up with something different that scratches a similar itch than bend the stoic Layton formula to vaguely apply to something it shouldn't.
