LittleBigPlanet 2 Officially Announced

Forget side-scrollers, let's make RPGs, shooters, racing games, and more.

For a game like LittleBigPlanet to make sense as a franchise, each new installment has to increase the amount of things you can create and tweak by an order of magnitude. Today's announcement of LittleBigPlanet 2 definitely looks like it's exactly that. Not only will all of the old content from the first game continue to work, but players will also be able to create entirely new kinds of games, with top-down racers, side-scrolling shooters, RPGs, and so on. Hopefully you'll be able to tweak the physics a bit to make everything feel a bit less floaty and playful. That ended up being the thing that slowly soured me on the original game. It was an amazing achievement, but even with all of the creativity being shown by the community's best minds, it all sort of ran together.

Here's a batch of shots, and there's a new trailer that's currently worming its way through our video compressor. All told, it looks kind of awesome.

The game is due this Winter.

I bought the first one on launch and maybe completed 66% before moving on.  I need to replay that game.

Also - mouse and keyboard support has been confirmed - honestly this is looking to be an awesome sequel, despite how sceptical i was about the sequel announcement!

This one could be the gem.  If they take all the criticism from the first game and actually improve those areas we could see one of the best titles on the console.

Looking pretty darn great! Excited to see just how all of these changes play out. Basically, all you could want from a sequel to LBP.

I just watched the trailer and I'm excited now.  LBP is one of my favorite PS3 games and I can't wait to play more of it with all the new awesome additions.

WOW! If only they added this for RPGS and RTS the last thing that would make me quit PC gaming.

This may be my reason to get a PS3. I can create 2D shooters? (Hopefully,) 2D beat em ups? And RPGs? Sounds like a lot of fun.

Yup yup! great news!

and yeah, the only game i remember supporting it was UT3 - and that did not last all that long online!
Its a shame cos if games like Red alert 3 (which had a longer dev cycle on the ps3 anyway) supported mouse and keyboard, like an RTS should - it might be put to much more use!!

I've heard the complaint about the jumping a lot, and its a real shame that was enough to disengage players. While I love the game, and I personally have mastered the physics-driven jumping, I can see why the fact that the locomotion was a bit loose would drive people away. Clearly a game with millions of levels needs to feel right. Looks like they plan to let players tweak the way the game feels, which may help resolve that. It may also mean that every LBP2 level will play slightly differently, and there will be no consistency, which could be worse than a little looseness. Time will tell how its received, but I'm stoked.

I am excited for this game, I wonder how in-depth the non-platformer customization goes. I would be very interested in seeing how many options there are for the RPG stuff for example.

I agree that the biggest thing I would want is control over the platforming physics. There were a ton of times in the original where I felt the physics weren't really in line with what the game was asking me to do and I would end up wasting way too much time on a specific jumping section.

LittleBigPlanet 2 is to LittleBigPlanet what Mass Effect 2 is to Mass Effect.

Every ounce of skepticism I had for this sequel announcement got completely obliterated by all the info and video coming out for the game today. There's just so much... STUFF in this game! If the game mechanics have been tuned to be just a bit more tactile - as Jeff has already requested - then this could easily be the best game of the year.

Side-note: It's nice to see a game that looks like a damn game this year. This year is just as full of grit as last year - even Halo's not as "juicy" looking as it once looked - but LBP 2 is one video game-ass looking video game. Bring on the whimsy Media Molecule.

You quisling! If Uncharted 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, Ratchet & Clank, and a variety of others weren't enough for you to roll off your sofa and get the Slim, then just stay parked on the couch and watch more Alias.

Having a gazillion announcements at E3 that could overshadow Sony, creating early buzz makes sense.  Plus wasn't it leaked last week that a second game was in the works?

@Homeslice:  lol I know it's weird. The games that I would've loved to play from the PS3 aren't many though. I never played a MGS game. Never played Uncharted. I am actually in the middle of God Of War, and I never played any Ratchet and Clank games. However, I am interested in Valkryia Chronicles, Infamous, MAG, and now this so who knows? If I do get the PS3 I may try out the games you mentioned.

Maybe because they have shit load of other stuff to show. From Move games, rumored Infamous 2, Syphon Filter PS3, Starhawk (url registered since last year), David Jaffe game (Twisted Metal ? ), Ape Escape PS3, Resistance 3, Motorostorm 3, already confirmed GT5 and Socom 4, thats from top of my head. Who knows what other surprise there is. O wait i almost forgot Agent and Last Guardian. Sony is going to have SICK E3 show, seriously.

Looks promising. Hope the platforming is better than in LBP1 - creatively wonderful, but lacking in control. Physics-driven jumping/control always feels disconnected to me... a bit like Roboblitz on XBLA.

Jeff, if you read some of the previews sprawled across the interwebs... You'll find that MediaMolecule had to keep the default physics/gravity the same due to the compatibility with the first's 2million levels; however you will be able to alter the gravity and weight of your Sackboy.

Mm stated that you can even have the loveable runt leaping and bounding akin to Mario if you so wish :)

I tried to get into the game but the controlls killed it for me. I really respect the developer's commitment to the community though. They remind me of the Burnout Paridise guys who supported their community too. It gives everyone envolved a good feeling and I want to see more of it.

Man mouse and keyboard support is an awesome idea, that was one thing that was keeping me from making levels just having to get through everything in such a slow  manner, and that was even worse in the PSP version where I was limited to a small screen and not one that I could zoom out much.
