Locked Up: Activision Flip Flops on GoldenEye's Paintball Mode

Activision's decision to make classic multiplayer variant a pre-order bonus is just...ugh.

Paintball mode in GoldenEye 007 had to be earned. On Wii, it was unlocked by default. Now, it's a pre-order exclusive.
Paintball mode in GoldenEye 007 had to be earned. On Wii, it was unlocked by default. Now, it's a pre-order exclusive.

Turns out the Internet’s rabid paranoia was right on this time around.

When Activision issued detailing pre-order incentives for GoldenEye 007: Reloaded this week, it mentioned GameStop pre-orders would have a code unlock paintball mode, a classic visual "cheat" from the original. The fear was no one else would have access to paintball mode, but Activision dismissed those fears, telling me it was a standard in-game unlockable.

"If you don’t pre-order the game from GameStop you’ll still be able to play the Paintball mode, but you’ll need to unlock it by progressing through the game," said an Activision representative to me on Tuesday.

As fun as GoldenEye's single player was, it was multiplayer where the hundreds of hours went.
As fun as GoldenEye's single player was, it was multiplayer where the hundreds of hours went.

All good, right? Wrong. Activision sent me a note earlier today with a rather unfortunate correction: paintball mode actually is exclusive to GameStop. You will not be able to unlock it any other way.

“For online multiplayer, paintball is exclusive to Gamestop consumers, you can’t get it without an unlock code,” said the rep. “It’s still available as an offline mode for Mi6 Ops missions.”

Okay, fine. Maybe Activision’s simply planning to roll this out as downloadable content, as has been standard practice this generation.

“All DLC is TBA [to be announced], nothing is confirmed yet,” said the rep.

If you're playing online and the host has paintball turned on, you'll see it, too...which means it's on the disc.

Sigh.

I realize moaning about a simple paintball variant is a weird thing to get hung up on, but hell, paintball was one of my favorite modes from GoldenEye 007. Unlocking paintball wasn’t easy, either; it required beating the Dam stage on Secret Agent in two minutes and 40 seconds. This was a satisfying achievement before Microsoft attached scores to such things. My friend group would sit around the TV for hours, playing each level over and over again, in hopes of shaving a few seconds off our time.

We never did unlock Invincibility.

But when we finally unlocked paintball, we’d earned the right to play paintball--and damn it felt good. So while anyone who picked up GoldenEye 007: Reloaded through GameStop could optionally unlock the mode early, everyone else would still have the ability to flip on paintball the old fashioned way: earning it.

In light of Warner Bros.’ decision to lock Catwoman behind an Online Pass, despite heavily promoting her involvement until the week before the game’s release, it’s not hard to feel like things have gotten wildly out of control. Publishers, where the heck is the line here? Players, maybe we need to start drawing it. For me, apparently, it's blatantly taking advantage of my nostalgia.

The situation reminds me of an image I found on Reddit, a sentiment that probably rings true with some of you:

No Caption Provided

There are reasons this has changed, though.

The relationship between players and marketing has evolved, becoming more personal--witness the rise of the community manager. It’s about “brand engagement” today, with companies obsessing over the number of retweets, likes, and shares across social networks. Many fans are completely okay with this. It works for some fans, and doesn’t for others.

At some point, though, when has everyone lost sight about, you know, the game?

That’s what rubs me wrong about this. You wouldn’t include paintball mode in a remix of GoldenEye 007 unless you were intentionally strumming the strings of my own memories, but by locking it behind a retailer purchasing incentive, it insultingly misses the point. You know what's worse? Paintball was unlocked by default in the Wii version from last year. Default.

Perhaps it’s telling that Activision told me one thing on Tuesday and another thing on Thursday--even the publishers we're upset at aren’t sure what’s going on or what to do. Activision had it right the first time, though, and it still has time to fix it.

I really dig the Facebook unlocks, like Griffin in Gears 3. I'm all for more of that, and way less of this garbage.

Locking away entire modes behind pre-order bonuses is a terrible practice. And in spite of the fact that I'll be buying Arkham City new, so online pass shenanigans won't effect me, I definitely object to slicing (seemingly) significant portions of a single-player game away and putting them behind this sort of thing. This is exactly the sort of slippery slope I was worried we would find ourselves on once EA targeted Project $10 at multiplayer modes rather than more inessential content. It feels like Publishers no longer care about providing a complete experience to their customers lest they jump through a set of hoops to obtain each piecemeal portion of a game they arbitrarily decided they could section off.

I'm not even someone who gets upset about DLC, but the idea of the online pass as it typically exists today is something I've always felt quite uneasy with. I'm comfortable with publishers providing incentives to purchase new, with more "bonus" type content - like the Cerberus Network, Black Emporium or even Rage's Sewer Missions - I just wish publishers could keep it at that.

Unless you don't buy into marketing gimmicks and don't use Facebook. In which case it's just as obnoxious as the rest of this shit.

This will never change until people stop preordering (or hell, stop buying games completely from companies like this), and that is never going to happen. We (as in nerds that follow game news) are a vocal minority and nothing more...and plenty of us say fuck Activision in one breath and then buy the latest Modern Warfare in the next.

I know I'm not saying anything new, but at this point there's pretty much zero hope of not continuing down this slippery slope.

Oh, i know this kind of stuff is crummy and awful, but i really enjoyed the stuff Halo, Blizzard games, and Gears do for going out of your way to check out expos and the like. I think it's a fun bonus for going out and doing cool stuff like that and i really don't see it as a negative, but this cheat code stuff is entirely different and it just seems stupid to lock significant gameplay content away for preorders.

See this would be a big deal if pre-order bonuses were anything worth caring about ever, but they never are. They're just throwaway pieces of content for promotion. The modern version of the free t-shirt with the game logo on it. Remember when preorders just came with those?

@Brodehouse: There actually are a lot of steam exclusives, but super meat boy really isn't a good example. All PC versions of SMB have to be steam activated, so no matter where you buy it you still get headcrab (I bought it from Greenman, and I have it), and the differences between the xbox and PC versions are designed to include characters that are significant to each platform. I think a lot of them are actually just cosmetic reskins as well.

All of this DLC pre-order online pass nickel and dime bullshit is only going to get worse and worse unless something catastrophic happens to the industry. So basically it's never going to stop. The gamers who possess enough sense to call bullshit on these practices are far too outnumbered by the ignorant masses or other folks who just don't care. Kinda makes me want to start pirating again even though I gave that up almost two years ago because I wanted good devs to get my money. But the publishers shit on us at every turn with this nonsense, so why not fuck them? Also the irony of publishers pandering to Gamestop when they're a huge source of lost income, and most likely the biggest reason the online pass even exists, just kills me.

Publishers really need to stop the pre-order exclusives. I'm not sure what they gain besides a negative public image. I know I'm in the minority, but I've stopped buying EA games due to these 'incentives', online passes, and odd DLC decisions.

As someone else with nostalgic feelings for GoldenEye, this does kinda piss me off. I wasn't ever going to pre-order from Gamestop... I probably wasn't going to buy this until it was in the bargain bin anyway, but still would have went with Amazon. I'm extra-not-buying it now though, I wish there was a stronger message I could send other than 'not buying it', because I really don't like this content locking shit. Maybe I'll pirate it, just cause I can (though I've never pirated xbox games before, I wouldn't know where to start... probably google.)

Hey! Activision is getting on that list of publishers whose games I don't buy at release because it is more beneficial to wait for everything to settle. Capcom started this with me being happy I passed on MvC3. My frugal nature may stop me from getting preorder bonuses, but at least I know exactly what I am getting by the time I buy the game.

Pre-order exclusive content for specific retailers is always a crappy thing, in my opinion. This is just another way that Activision is fucking over it's customers in order to rake in some extra cash for their bottom line.

On the oft-subject, things behind the 'online pass' I don't mind at all; all new copies of the game come with the online pass included as part of your purchase (no extra money charged). Where as used copies need to buy the online pass separately if they want that content... considering that I find the prices for used games to generally be a bit of a rip off (usually $5 under the current retail price), I only buy new anyhow. With that said, I don't think that putting an online-pass system on a SINGLE PLAYER only game is a good idea in any way (ala-Arkaham City).

I don't exactly think the whole problem is that it's exclusive or a form of DLC tbh.

My issue would lie with the fact that if I don't pre-order this game (anywhere, not just Gamestop) I simply do not get this mode...a mode that WAS the original Goldeneye. When you bring back a game not only based on pure nostalgia of one of/if not the greatest game of all time then you don't lock one of those modes that made the game so damn good.

Not to mention again that I can't get that mode unless I have pre-ordered, or no doubt just have to pay for it at a later date.

It's that, that's the biggest issue, for me anyway. The fact that if I go in 1 day after or even just on release day and pick it up I am instantly not getting the full package. That is bullshit.

I'm okay with pre-order stuff as long as it's limited to meaningless stuff like character skins (see: Gears of War 3). While ideally anybody who buys the game should have access to everything available for the game, it just doesn't seem that's the way it works. So, since this is the way it is, I'm happy if it's limited to outfits and character skins. This seems like a step past that line though. Paintball mode is a classic 'mutator' in that game, limiting who can play that is just egregious.

It's possible, but I wouldn't want it that way. And it's not just paintball mode. It's a feature that is on the disk that can't be used unless you are 100% committed to buying it before it's even out.

Game companies seem to be doing their damnedest to discourage me from buying their games, with all this "incentive" bullshit. And that's fine with me. As the industry expands, so do the choices. Weapon skins, character skins, additional playable characters and levels, powers, ENTIRE story elements. All accessible if you only go the extra step of pre-ordering or microtransactioning to declare your loyalty to said product. Guess what, my initial fucking purchase is my loyalty, ass-mongers. You're already raping my wallet.

Agreed. It's one thing to go "oh hey, this special Cod MW3 thing makes you shoot paintballs, but it's exclusive somehow" and another to say "hey remember that mode in goldeneye you unlocked because you(my friend) was awesome at the game? You better pre-order it at a...kind of awful store if you want it".

Batman is kind of a joke. They stated you could play her a long ass time ago. They stated that maybe up to 10% of the game involved playing her. RIGHT BEFORE it's released, she's an online pass? All right, whatever, I like sticking my own thumb up my ass why shouldn't I let other people do it to me. All I ask for is transparency if you want to screw me.

The fact that we let publishers get away with this is disgusting. With all of the negative comments towards publishers doing this, are we, as consumers, going to get off our computer chairs and find a solution to this problem?

What will it take to actually get us motivated to do something?
