Mark Hamill Probably Won't Be In Batman: Arkham Asylum 3

The voice actor says Arkham 2 will be his 'last hurrah' as The Joker.

Maurice LeMarche and Stana Katic have reportedly confirmed their involvement with Arkham Asylum 2 as Mr. Freeze and Talia al Ghul respectively.

Like Sledgehammer Games' first Call of Duty "action-adventure," not much has been said about Batman: Arkham Asylum 2--at least, beyond the post-Spike Video Game Awards debut rumor-mongering and the confirmation of a few characters thanks to voice actor slips (see right). But Mark Hamill, the actor who most famously played Luke Skywalker in Star Wars and provided the voice for The Joker in the original Arkham Asylum and its sequel, had something very interesting to say recently about his future with the series: namely, he doesn't have one.

Speaking with IGN at the Cannes Film festival, Hamill said, "This will be my last, there's no question about that. But it's the last hurrah."

Those were Hammil's final words on the subject of the new game broached at the festival. Beforehand he mentioned that he wanted to leave Batman on a "high note," but was convinced to do Arkham Asylum due to Kevin Conroy and Paul Dini's involvement.

As you might agree, that was a good choice. Still--again, before he mentioned that this Joker appearance would be his "last hurrah"--Hammil confided to IGN that the impact of the first game, which made boatloads of money, made him feel the same doubtful way about returning again as The Joker's pipes. According to Hamill, Rocksteady was able to "reassure" the voice actor by telling him the plan for the sequel, which I know woefully, gut-wrenchingly little about.

It's easy to jump off the speculation cliff as to why Hamill believes Batman: Arkham Asylum 2 will be his last. Is it as simple as The Joker biting the big one in the sequel? Or is it just because the man plans to leave on a high note? My guess is the latter, by the way. What's yours?

Indeed.  I'm guessing he did this one because they moved onto producing it so quickly.
I'd hope that if we do see an Arkham Asylum 3, it won't be about the Joker anyway.  I still say this one should have focused on an enitrely new main villian.

Well if that's the case then the Joker can't be in AA3. Simple as that.

Doubtful. The Joker will probably just be locked up and won't be seen in any other sequels.

@WinterSnowblind: Yeah I'm a bit disappointed that they chose to make the Joker the main villain again. Not really surprised though, he really is a crowd pleaser.

Thats what they thought at CVG.
Does anybody really think DC would allow them to do that?
They're more likely to kill Bruce Wayne...I mean ACTUALLY kill him, not Omega beam him.

Would be a crying shame if the Joker was in AA3 without Hamill's quintessential voice. Although would it be hard to scout for a voice impressionist for his Joker style?

If they ever kill the Joker in a Batman game I will be fucking pissed.  Even if they just lock him up forever that would be better than killing him.

And he probably doesn't want to do it because Sequels constantly are let-downs in video games.  Like the saying goes. "Quit while you're ahead."

Edit: And yes obviously there are good sequels out there I know this.

This just in the Joker will not be in Arkham Asylum 3, more on the late break news at 11.

On aside note, I just want AA2 before even worrying about 3. In my opinion I think it was kinda lazy going with Joker again, kinda hope the game starts with Joker getting taken down right away. I want new bad guys, Joker is awesome but I don't think it will be as good story wise if he's calling the shots the entire time again.

I hope the second game will have something to do with simulations, Arsenal Joker, George Washington, Patriots, and Robin's sister, Emma.

I'd say video games have the highest ratio of good to bad sequels than any other medium.

I hope they won't over-use Joker in the series, but I'd hate to see Hamill never touch the VO for Joker again. His version is my favorite.

I recall he already said he'd quit after the first game...
Guess he was surprised by the success of B: AA thus wanting to reprise his role in the sequell.
But yeah, a third one would indeed be a little too much.
Give the Joker some time to premeditate a few more criminal activities...

By now, I've come to accept that Hamill won't always be The Joker. However, any time they get Kevin Conroy to come back for Batman, it would be sacrilege to not get Hamill back for Joker. Same coin situation.

Maybe before this statement the Joker was going to live on, but I think if Mark pulls out, the Joker will disappear from the AA series - kind of like they are retconning it before it was ever finished... if anyone follows what I am saying lol

Sorry I should have said 2nd sequels.  I've found that the 3rd installments of games are constantly bad.  But there are some bad cases of first sequels as well.  KOTOR comes to mind.

Seriously? What about Super Mario Bros. 3? Or The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past? Third installments don't have any lower a success rate than sequels or even new IP's.

I think dude's just saying this every time to get a bigger check with each sequel/reprisal. That said, I doubt they'll be bringing him along for a third game for that reason among the more obvious one, being that it's dumb to have a super-hero fight the same villain even in two games, let alone three.

I believe, honestly, at this point in his career; with all the bad movies and parts that he has played, all he wants is to do is make the fans happy with his work. I believe he is afraid of failure as well. So many games have the potential to ruin something for the fans, and I dont think he wants any part of that. I suspect if they wooed him by telling him the plot then either its truly the last we'll see of Joker in this series or he is just trying to not make any promises he doesnt want to uphold for the future.

Its dangerous to promise you'll do something in the entertainment industry when you can never be sure its going to be a good thing, and as many character voices in games that hes done I think he knows that and he wont be swayed by how the game does now but rather the quality of what is presented to him. I suspect at this point he sees no need for the character anymore (which I would agree) in the series so he really doesnt have an interest in continuing it further.

Just my guess based on interviews and such with him before. He may just be sick of playing the Joker at this point and wants to move on. I really dont know but those are my guesses.

The first Arkham Asylum is enough to keep me entertained for years.  That game's so good it's almost like giving it a sequel would be spoiling all of us.  If there is an Arkham Asylum 3 in the future, the loss of Hamill doesn't have to be a bad thing.  Sure, he's Batman's most notorious foe, arch-nemesis, whatever (and Hamill's voice work is essential for the character), but there's plenty of other villains that can be just as menacing.  Yet, as I say that, I can't think of one character that would be a good main villain, it would have to be someone very clever and not just very strong.  Scarecrow could probably take over...but shit I just need to stop speculating right now.

As long as they don't try to recast the Joker I'm fine with this.  Batman has arguably the largest stable of awesome villains of any super hero ever, and cool as the Joker is, he doesn't need to be in EVERY game/movie/whatever.

But for the love of God DON'T shoehorn Joker into AA3 and then try to get some other fool trying to do a Mark Hamill impression.  No Hamill, no Joker.  Simple as that.

All seems a tad premature until AA2 is out in any case.

He said the same thing on GTTV for the first Batman: AA too. Its too bad, his Joker voice is, in my eyes, the best Joker voice there is. Hopefully this one makes an ass load of cash too, and is as well loved as the last one, hopefully he will just keep coming back. Besides he's too fat and old to play Luke again, mans gota work right?

If Mark Hamil isn't there to voice the Joker the character straight up shouldn't in the 3rd Arkham Asylum if there is one.
