Mass Effect 2 Coming To PS3 In January 2011

Exclusivity, schmeclusivity!

The persistence of rumors claiming that the Mass Effect franchise would be coming to the PS3 might have stolen some of the thunder from Electronic Arts' unveil this morning, but the fact that Mass Effect 2 is PS3-bound is still pretty surprising.

During EA's Gamescom press conference, BioWare's Dr. Ray Muzyka took the stage and announced that the second game in the sci-fi RPG series would be coming to Sony's console. He didn't comment on what fresh or special features the PS3 edition of the game could potentially have, and he didn't talk about the first game in the series. He did, however, peg a release window for ME2 PS3: January 2011.

The press release that followed Dr. Muzyka's unveil isn't much of a help on the feature front either, mainly because of how weirdly vague it is. According to EA, this edition "will include the full Mass Effect 2 game and hours of bonus content." It's unknown if "bonus content" is referring to previously released bits of DLC or something akin to a documentary disc--or something else entirely.

Above is the announcement trailer. It doesn't shed any light on most of our pressing questions either, but it does show off a crisp version of the game that I'd imagine can make any PS3 fan feel all funny on the inside. (You guys feel funny, right?)

Mass Effect 2 on PS3 sounds grand, but there's a problem: PS3 owners don't have access to the first game, meaning they'll start out in ME2 dry and without any save file to transfer over. Part of the fun in ME2 was in discovering how your choices from the first game made an impact in the second, both in terms of relationships and story. BioWare played up those wrinkles in-game, and is continuing to do so for the third title, according to interviews. That said, BioWare doesn't seem like the kind of developer to leave this kind of thing hanging, so fingers crossed they come up with a solution before next January.

That's all very good and stuff, but it doesn't really have my interest unless they release the first one as well. So sorry Bioware, but I'm only going to buy this if the first os also getting a PS3 release.

Aw really? This is a game that is essentially a flagship 360 game. Not angry or anything but GLAD that ps3 owners will be able to play this fantastic game.

my guess is they're going to include a summary CG movie of ME1, and just start everyone off as the good Shepard.

If only PC had so many exclusives... I mean, if only many games that are exclusive to a certain console came out for PC... Especially Arcade and PSN games :(

" Why do we have more then one console again?  "

Because each of the three companies have very distinct strengths that make their console worth buying.    Microsoft's online structure provides by far the best online experience and their OS background is apparent in how well their entire upgrade and update system works.  Their strong focus on western games is also a welcome feature for those of us uninterested in most of the stuff coming out of Japan.   Sony's hardware background is apparent in the quality of the PS3.  Additionally, their financial interest in Bluray technology as both a manufacturer and as a movie rights holder insured its inclusion THIS generation which is a plus for those of us with home theater setups.  Sony's PS2 era relationships with small niche Japanese publishers also is a bonus for those interested in quirky Japanese games as their games are now starting to appear on the PS3.  Nintendo's long history on the gaming space brings with it an incredibly deep well of existing franchises and pretty much unprecedented sales strength of first party software.  Generation after generation, Nintendo has consistently brought the most reliable and polished first party games. This generation they went a new route and opened up gaming to a very large new segment of players with innovative (if not always perfect or even preferable) motion controls.  If I had to produce a single console, then I would love to have Microsoft's online expertise, Sony's manufacturing background, and Nintendo's first party developers all working on one machine.  It would be great . . . . for awhile.  The downside is that you would have the same situation as with the NES in the US during the mid to later 80's- no effective competition.  There would be nothing to drive them to produce new and better hardware, nothing to drive them to invest in their online services, nothing to spur them to innovate, nothing to push them to drop console prices.  Think how much later the PS3 would have launched without MS's competitive pressure on Sony.  Think about how much more expensive it would still be if market pressure wasn't there to push the price down.  "

Can't believe I'm gonna buy this game for the third time (once on 360, and when the system started being a little bitch I returned it for the PC  version)...

I had to start from an all new save on the PC version, so playing it again is not a big deal. I pray that the mineral scanning is as close to the mouse movement as possible - I heard it was awful on the 360 version.

Very cool for PS3 users.

It's too bad there won't be access to ME1 save data, as the default decisions pulled forward are pretty poor, but it's still my favourite game of the year and it's good that more people get to play it.

Oh man, I already have both on 360, but if they came up with some sort of tool to let you make your own choices from part one I'm totally sold. Who am I kidding? I'm probably gonna buy this anyway.

Glad to see its coming to ps3. I don't think not having mass effect 1 is a big deal because it really only changed a few things. I played it through on two different saves and the only real difference was having wrex or not. And even then it wasn't a big deal. Still a great game.

Crazy. Not in the actual "crazy" sense but just surprised. Mass Effect was a franchise I always thought would stay with Microsoft. Well, still definitely check it out. Let's hope for the best I guess.

No ME1 save means PS3 users have to use the default storyline... which incorporates the death of Wrex. A Wrexless version is an inferior version.

I think Bioware really needs to find a way to reactify this first game situation they have when they do this. im sorry, but if all they do is a "Mass Effect in 5 minutes" Kinda thing like they did in the ME 2 demo on 360, thats not good enough.

Why not? The ME2 default storyline was specifically made for people who hadn't played 1. That is even more likely to be the case with PS3 owners. They'd be going back on their own logic if they put Wrex in.

What made Mass Effect 2 so good was importing your decisions from Mass Effect 1.

And Mass Effect 1 isn't coming to the PS3.

I have a feeling that some of this bonus content might be aimed at fixing the problem of not having the first game on the PS3.

Yay!! Very excited to get this :D But yeah, it does suck that us PS3 owners won't have the experience of importing our Mass Effect 1 save. But, at least we can do it with Mass Effect 3, right? :D

Don't care.

In a way, this kinda reminds me of the time Bioshock was ported to the PS3 a year after it's orginal release.  I just hope they don't decided to throw in any platform exclusive DLC just to get people to buy it.  ME2 is a big enough game and it's already got a wealth of DLC that it doesn't need anything extra.

So ME1 may not come to PS3?

Damn, never thought of it that way. Sucks for them though I'm sure the first game will get a port eventually, even though it'll be too late and a lot of people will have already finished the game and won't bother replaying the first, just to replay the second. Otherwise this port is only a good thing. More people need to learn of the glory of Mass Effect.

So... if you just start a new game in Mass Effect 2, Wrex is dead.

Does this mean that PS3 owners will never meet Wrex?  Is Wrex now a console-exclusive character?!

Yeah, its kind messed up. maybe theyll do something like a "mass Effect in 5 minutes" kinda thing on the PS3 disc of ME 2, but even thats not good enough because what if the PS3 players want to shape the world with their choices and all that?

Also, does this mean ME 3 is PS3 bound?

Many would argue that ME 2 on 360 is still going to be the better version for consoles because you are able to play the first one and have all your choices carry over to the second and upcoming third game. 360 owners get to shapre their own game world for the universe to a extent and it dosent look liek PS3 owners will get to do that.

Plus, we dont even know for sure if ME 3 will hit PS3 or if itll hit same day or alot later then teh 360 version. ALSO, we dont know if Bioware is going to fuck up the port or not on PS3. They might outsource it, and nothing good ever comes out of that.

On a side note: I kind of played the first then got bored with it so I started ME2 as a brand new game and.. I guess that whole choice/relationship crap doesn't affect me cause I do hear it works and thats cool. Just not enough for me to play the first just for the sake of it.

This is more about Mass Effect 3 than anything. You can guarantee that game is coming day and date on PS3, PC and 360. The bonus content will be used to bridge the gap. It's a bummer, but I never expected Mass Effect 1 to be ported -- by all accounts it feels old next to ME2 now, and also the game was published by Microsoft.

Whatever, so long as they have a good way of bridging the story, I'm very pleased. I haven't played Mass Effect yet, so I hope it's as good as it's hyped to be.
