Mass Effect 2 Coming To PS3 In January 2011

Exclusivity, schmeclusivity!

The persistence of rumors claiming that the Mass Effect franchise would be coming to the PS3 might have stolen some of the thunder from Electronic Arts' unveil this morning, but the fact that Mass Effect 2 is PS3-bound is still pretty surprising.

During EA's Gamescom press conference, BioWare's Dr. Ray Muzyka took the stage and announced that the second game in the sci-fi RPG series would be coming to Sony's console. He didn't comment on what fresh or special features the PS3 edition of the game could potentially have, and he didn't talk about the first game in the series. He did, however, peg a release window for ME2 PS3: January 2011.

The press release that followed Dr. Muzyka's unveil isn't much of a help on the feature front either, mainly because of how weirdly vague it is. According to EA, this edition "will include the full Mass Effect 2 game and hours of bonus content." It's unknown if "bonus content" is referring to previously released bits of DLC or something akin to a documentary disc--or something else entirely.

Above is the announcement trailer. It doesn't shed any light on most of our pressing questions either, but it does show off a crisp version of the game that I'd imagine can make any PS3 fan feel all funny on the inside. (You guys feel funny, right?)

Mass Effect 2 on PS3 sounds grand, but there's a problem: PS3 owners don't have access to the first game, meaning they'll start out in ME2 dry and without any save file to transfer over. Part of the fun in ME2 was in discovering how your choices from the first game made an impact in the second, both in terms of relationships and story. BioWare played up those wrinkles in-game, and is continuing to do so for the third title, according to interviews. That said, BioWare doesn't seem like the kind of developer to leave this kind of thing hanging, so fingers crossed they come up with a solution before next January.

Every year it seems like the point of exclusive console games diminishes.

Too bad the first one isn't coming too.  Maybe the bonus content is some kind of recap of the first game.

Wow surprising that it actually came true.
I also wonder will Mass Effect 3 come to the PS3 as well.

On a side note I actually owne ME 1,2 on the 360 but sold ME 2 for like 45 bucks.. lol but I kinda of want to buy it again,so now I don't know whether I should buy the 360 version a second time or wait for the PS3 version next year.

Oh shit, without having the opportunity to play the first game that means PS3 owners will never get to experience the awesomeness that is Wrex.

Kinda expected it since Dragon Age went to PS3 to, seems only logical.
But it's not logical to not have ME1 for the choices and stuff, because that's like most of the game's worth and appeal O.o.

Took them long enough. I'm a PC gamer so this is no big thing for me, but grats to anyone who has only had a PS3 and missed out on this series. It's far from Biowares best work, but it's certainly a good series. I foresee a lot of youtube videos of ME 1's story getting a lot more views after this news.

Mass Effect is seriously the only reason I still have a 360 this is so effing awesome news. A shame they can't bundle ME1 with it or port it over at all being published by Microsoft Game Studios.

It's too bad the first Mass Effect isn't on PS3. People new to the series won't have any idea what happened in the first game with the Reapers and all that.

ME1 was publish by Microsoft. ME2 was published by Activision. This is why ME2 is getting ported and ME1 isn't. That is all.

It's easy to bypass - maybe directly, through some save converting, or maybe with a simple, in-game quiz, like they handled the .

they should make an ending generator since ps3 users have no way of porting over save games for the first mass effect.

Pretty cool. Though too bad the first one isn't coming over. Not that one would really want to play the first before playing the second  (just seeing how improved the second is) anymore, the continued story elements were pretty damn cool that now those on PS3 wont get to experience. They may not have been as "big" as they were hyped up, but they still made a difference, had a sense that you did a lot instead of the computer just generating it.

I do agree with Ygg; a major focal point of ME2 is the continuation of Commander Shephard's previous endeavors through 1. Without the import save feature, the game will not receive the same level acclamation as on the Xbox or PC.

No save game import means no Wrex.

Inferior version as far as I'm concerned.

I don't like how they called Mass Effect 2 perfect in the trailer. It's not. Nothing is. It just got the highest score available in a lot of cases.

And honestly, I would say it's probably a 4/5 due to the repetitive nature of the shooting. Basically it feels very poorly paced since the encounters just drag on and on long past when they are fun and fresh with very samey action which usually is hiding behind cover shooting dudes unless it's not hiding behind cover punching dudes very poorly. Plot was good though.

Great move, now PS3 owners will have to buy a 360 and ME1 or ME1 for pc and play it. Oh the torture! Perhaps I need to knock the cobwebs off my PS3 and begin playing it. Maybe.

Depending of if there's any new exclusive content, I may buy me this port. If ME3 is multi-platform, though, I'll still get it on 360.

"Part of the fun in ME2 was in discovering how your choices from the first game made an impact in the second, both in terms of relationships and story."

I'll be honest -- I never played the first Mass Effect, but didn't feel I missed out at all when I played the sequel. I think it's in part due to the "decisions" are played down quite significantly and don't have much of an impact at all in the long run.

This kinda sucks

Hehe, I bet all of you are missunderstanding me right now.
What they should have done is put out both ME and ME2.
Mass Effect is an extremly story driven game. The fact that PS3 only owners wont have any clue to whats going on unless EA puts out ME on PS3 or Bioware makes a "previously on" but that wont be enough. I have a feeling that it won't be as special for PS3 owners as it is for PC and 360 owners since hey are jumping into the epic story a 1/3rd of the way through.
I hope BioWare does something about this so that PS3 owners will get to experience Mass Effect in the best way possible.
