Mass Effect 2 Goes Multiplatform and More News From EA

EA held its quarterly earnings call today, and there's a pile of announcements and delays to go along with it.

"Clear and simple, our titles did not perform to our expectations."
EA's John Riccitiello got on the horn to talk investors and other interested parties through the particulars of its quarterly earnings today. As you probably know, these types of calls are typically focused on the business side, with lots of number crunching and--as these things go these days--some hand-wringing, as well. But if you just want some game details, there's a chunk of that stuff to go over, as well. Here's a quick rundown:

  • The previously announced layoffs across the company have raised from 1,000 jobs to approximately 1,100. 12 EA-owned locations will be consolidated, which is up from the previously announced nine.
  • The Godfather II has been bumped back to sometime between April and June of 2009. The company cited marketing challenges and a cluttered marketplace for the delay.
  • The Sims 3 has been pushed back to June 2.
  • The PC version of Dragon Age: Origins has been delayed to the back half of 2009 and will now coincide with the console releases of the game.
  • EA plans to do more and better work on the Wii, because that's where the money is. As such, the company is working on a Dead Space game for the Wii. It wasn't a full, formal announcement, though. So we're not sure if this is a Wii version of the original or if it's going to be Dead Space: Chop 'Til You Drop or something.
  • Mass Effect 2 will be a multiplatform game.
  • Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (potentially not its actual name) will hit consoles in Q1 2010.

Holy crap, we're talking about games that will come out in 2010 already? Dude, we live in the future. The company is also working to reduce spending and putting a greater focus on marketing. Getting behind the games that it puts out in a bigger way seems like a sound idea to me.

EA is making noise like it's going to go after the "core" market on the Wii pretty hard to capitalize on Nintendo's big installed base. If Dead Space was released on all four major platforms at the same time (PS3, 360, PC, and Wii), would you buy the Wii version? Aside from some potentially interesting dismemberment mechanics, that doesn't seem like a game I'd want to play with anything other than a dual-stick gamepad.

It just does not make sense putting ME2 on PS3 unless the first game could be ported, but how would that happen when it was published by Microsoft Game Studios.  Publishers have contracts that protect their publishing rights.  For example I have never seen a Microsoft, Sony, on Nintendo published game on a competitive console......it just doesn't happen.

EA maybe able to put ME2 on PS3 but seriously doubt legally they can put the first on PS3 without consent from Microsoft.

Regardless the way I read the announcement is multiplatform means PC and X360 unless otherwise announced.

Gaming in 2009 has been officially delayed and cancelled.  All game developers have been given furloughs for 1 year.

Dragon Origins delay SUCKS, I just hope the PS3 version isnt CHAWRIBLE like FO3 :(

I think this is a good move for EA as a company because it is all about money and you can get more money if a game comes out on more than one system which is Economics 101 for video game makers.  I am just glad that it is coming out sometime so I can play it and see where they take the awesome setup from the first from there.

This is all bad news. Mass Effect 2 would have been better as an exclusive because they would have focused on tapping into the power of one console.

Not saying it will happen, I seriously doubt it will given that no KOTORs have ever been on a Sony console..however...

Saints Row 2 is on PS3, Saints Row 1 is not

Mass Effect on PS3? Yes please.  I've always been interested in the original.

The Godfather II is pushed back?  :(  Hopefully this will give it time to improve better than last time I saw it.

Mass Effect 2 news: Is the Triple getting ME1?

Because if we can't play the backstory + import our ME1 characters no sale. I'll stick to the 360 version.

Sadness... DA:O is delayed. But it's Bioware, so its not really a surpirse. Also... was't the plan all along to have the ME games be multiplatform? the first one was, eventually.

Also, I was hoping DA:O would be the oppossite of ME - comes to PC first. But as long as it comes to PC gamers, bioware's loyal followers, at the same time as consoles I will be ok. I just don't wanna get screwed over again. Although, DA:O, being what it is, is gonna play best on a PC anyway (isometric top-down BG style RPG). Or lameasses can play it ME/ Kotor style, i guess. (thats not a bad way to play, but the other way is better).

"When they say multiplatform then mean consoles. last year Mass Effect was listed as a 360 exclusive and also came out on PC."

Not necessarily.  Oblivion was categorized as a multiplatform release even when it was only on PC and 360.

"Saints Row 2 is on PS3, Saints Row 1 is not"
They were porting Saints Row 1 to PS3, but they canceled it due to technical problems.

Mass Effect is an awesome game. It's great to know that BioWare is doing well with that franchise. The 360 version of ME2 better not have the same problems as ME1 had or that will be dumb.

If multiplatform meant 360 and PC then every 360 exclusive would be multiplatform. You know its true.

Yeah.  It is true.  As true as it is that multiplatform to Microsoft doesn't mean the same thing as multiplatform to almost every other publisher.

They're trying to get into the 40-year-old housewife market of the Wii with a game like Dead Space? The logic is all there...

I never played Mass Effect for PC, but i heard there was an "offical" ending to the game in that build so if it really does come out on the ps3 there could be a short recap of the story. Honestly i think the term multiplatform is missused when it comes to pc/360 releases. I wish they would just say Microsoft Gaming Systems or some shit like that.

Crazy, I still haven't even finished the first Mass Effect game. Shame about the Sims 3 delay.

If i were EA i would make Mass Effect 2 on the PS3 include Mass Effect 1, there's plenty of room on the Blue Ray. actually if i WAS EA i'd probably end up selling it separately for full price, or together as part of a $115 collectors edition with a blue fleshlight.

Multiplatforms as in 360/PC not PS3.
