Mass Effect 2 PS3 Includes Old DLC, New Introductory Element

Don't look for Mass Effect 1 anytime soon, though.

Mass Effect 2 for the PS3 will include some, if not all, of the post-release DLC from the Xbox 360 version of Mass Effect 2. It will also ship with a fresh introductory element that might help new owners of the sequel come to grips with what happened in the first game, which so far isn't confirmed for a PS3 release.

Word of this comes straight from BioWare's Dr. Ray Muzyka in a conversation with VG247. "One of the things [BioWare] is doing is bringing a lot of the post-release downloadable content and integrating it into the experience, so that PS3 fans can check that out and play it," he said at Gamescom in Cologne.

"We're making sure there's a really seamless introduction to the world of Mass Effect, for players that haven’t experienced it before."

After this edition of the game was announced during EA's press conference in Cologne, the publisher promised "bonus content" in a press release. Post-release DLC and a new introduction fit that bill.

Dr. Muzyka didn't address one of the other glaring weaknesses of the PS3 edition of the game: the lack of a save file transfer. Mass Effect 2 for the Xbox 360 featured numerous plot branches that players of the first game (with a transferred save file) could experience. It made choices, such as the life and death of two crew members, in the first game matter in its sequel. BioWare has until January 2011 to figure out what to do about this part of the game, though it's worth pointing out that you can certainly still play and enjoy Mass Effect 2 with a fresh character.

How is it desperate to have players new to Mass Effect 2 to know what happened in Mass Effect 1?

I think that's fine. So long as they're doing the best they can. Bioware's a great studio so I'm sure they'll come up with a good solution to bridge the story gap.

I don't like the idea that they include all or some DLC packs into the game which we had to buy ourselves...

Its like Tales of Vesperia all over again.

As someone who plays Mass Effect on PC I don't see how one could enjoy the second game without having played the first. The whole point of Mass Effect is that your actions carry consequences through multiple games. For PS3 players will have the choices made for them which isn't fun at all.

I think this is a good thing to happen but it will be interesting to see what happens with ME and ME3.

Even though the lack of Mass Effect kinda sucks I don't care.  When my friend told me about Mass Effect 2 coming to the PS2, I called him a liar and told him to get out of my told him to get out of my house, although it was his house.  But just knowing I can finally play Mass Effect 2 is awesome enough for me, given I don't have a 360 nor a PC good enough to play it I am ecstatic.

Fuck you Bioware. You made me buy all those DLC packs for the S-Rank; even the shitty Kasumi DLC.

I would expect something like a one hour movie that highlights some of the moments of the Mass Effect 1 story, or something like what they did for MGS4.
I have a friend that played through ME 2 with minimum knowledge of ME 1... so, I guess it can be done. Still, some introduction to the world before jumping into 2 would be nice.

People should not be annoyed that it comes with the DLC.

Every game with tons of DLC inevitably returns in a package that includes it all a while later.  What you get out of paying for it immediately is being able to play it immediately and supporting its existence.  If we didn't have to pay for that content, it simply wouldn't exist for anyone.

There's nothing "unfair" going on here.  I only have a PC and 360, but I think it's a great thing that PS3 owners can play what I consider to be the best game of 2010 so far.

@W0lfbl1tzers: Game of the Year Editions are fine; but I don't like it when they retail it on another port version with more stuff than the original. Financially and economically it makes sense, since adding all that DLC will justify them jacking up the $60 price mark for ME2 on the PS3, but it kinda makes you feel as if you got jipped.

Ah well.

Couldn't they fit both games on one blu-ray disc? I would understand cutting DLC if they could make that happen.

You COULD just buy ME1 for the PC for cheap. And it runs quite well on low end PCs.

360 owners: We got the game a year earlier and we also got Mass Effect 1. The PS3 edition including some DLC is not ripping you off.

@Meteora: I own it on PC but I see why they do it. It will be a year old by the time they release it and some people will need some kind of incentive to pick it up.  Maybe they'll release a Game of the Year edition along side of the PS3 release

Even if they could, I don't think the first game would hold up in 2011.

When you consider when it was released, there is a case to be made for liking the first Mass Effect more than the second, but ME2 is up to polished, modern AAA shooter standards in terms of how it controls and ME1 definitely isn't.

Its bullshit when r we gonna c Uncharted 2 or GOW 3 on the 360
Why should the 360s greatest game b released for the PS3
Its not fair, Metal Gear being released 4 360 is different because its a completely new game

Bioware is not owned by Microsoft whereas Sony owns Naughty Dog and Sony Santa Monica. Bioware is free to port Mass Effect 2 to whatever console they wish so long as EA allows them too. In fact, this is probably EAs idea to begin with.

I think Microsoft holds the rights to Mass Effect 1 seeing as they published it. Bioware probably isn't allowed to port that game to any other console. Its a shame really.

I don't really understand publishing all that well, but couldn't they just change some features and rename it (like Ninja Gaiden Sigma)?  Either way, it's probably too much work for 3 year old game.

Just release the first game for PS3. This is ridiculous and as I've said before, it's stupid to try and release 2 games from a trilogy on one platform and the other two have the full trilogy. It's like starting the original Star Wars trilogy off on TESB, and at the beginning have a "Previously on Star Wars" moment. Extremely lame.

Wouldn't most PS3 owners have already played this on their 360 or PC?  Unless... oh, dear lord.  This must mean there are gamers out there that only own a PS3!  What must that be like? (shudders uncontrollably.)

I just hope that they assume, that everyone who had any interest in Mass Effect had already played it on this platform or another, and allow us to choose the, well, choices we made in the first game at the beginning of ME2 PS3. Plus, they throw in some plot summary for those, who haven't experienced the greatness of ME yet, and prepare a ready setup of choices for them.

I'm sure that I won't purchase first day on this one, but I'm excited about having it on the PS3. I've played through ME2 on the 360, traded it in for some dumb reason, and wish I still had it. I'll just wait for it to be released @ 40.00 for PS3
