Mass Effect 3 Delayed into Early 2012

The ridiculously quick turnaround from Mass Effect 2 was apparently too good to be true.

When BioWare and Electronic Arts revealed Mass Effect 3 would be coming by the holiday season, less than two years after the release of Mass Effect 2, there was much celebrating. You'll have to store the party favors for a few more months, however: Mass Effect 3 has been delayed into early 2012.

"Today we have confirmed that Mass Effect 3 will be released in the first three months of 2012," said exec. producer Casey Hudson in a statement. "The development team is laser focused on making sure Mass Effect 3 is the biggest, boldest and best game in the series, ensuring that it exceeds everyone’s expectations. We'll have more details about specific dates as we get closer to release."

The note appeared on BioWare's message boards and Facebook pages.

Cue the sad trombone. But, hey, more time for Skyrim!

Same. It needs time. The last game was very rushed feeling. So much shit was just thrown out the window, it felt like they just wanted to release it quickly. "
What do you mean? It came out three years after the first game, that's more than most games do, and that's more than it's taking ME3 to be made, even with this delay.  "
The game itself felt rushed. I know that it took a long time, god I know, I was following that game so goddamn close. The original is probably my most played game ever. I've played more of that than my crazy friend who's played TF2 since it's launch like a goddamn religion.
I just meant it felt like a game that had been pushed out just to get it out at a certain point. So much was stripped out, the main story line was incredibly small, if you remove the recruit missions (I don't consider them part of the core story because they never had anything to do with the big picture).  Most of the things that made the original unique and awesome were just completely removed or made insignificant. You ended up having like, 2 or 3 abilities. There were like 5 guns. Some of the gun types didn't even have multiples until DLC. And even then, does the SMG have variants? I guess it's supposed to be the Machine Pistol variant, but still....

This is actually good news for me, because I'm going to be busy with Uncharted 3, Battlefield 3, and Arkham Asylum this Fall/Winter. I want to be able to devote 100% of my attention to Mass Effect 3 when it comes out.

Dragon Age II suffered greatly from it's tight schedule so I'm glad to see ME3 given more time.

Honestly, I'm at an age where I don't even mind delays anymore. I'd rather wait and have a game be as good as it can be.

Eh, I can wait. If the game turns out to be awesome, then that's really all that matters to me.

I was hoping for a delay too many damn releases. Wasn't Mass Effect 2 delayed by a few months also? Anyways it seems like a good idea to get it out of the ridiculously crowded Holiday '11 release window. ME2 didn't seems to suffer not releasing in Q1.

I am expecting ME3 to be game of the fucking century and if that means that BioWare want to push it back to make sure it is as spectacular as it should be then that is fine with me.

That's a huge bummer. But, I guess there is enough coming out later this year to barely notice.

I called it months ago, but it still breaks my heart a little. At this point, Bioware can do whatever the fuck they want without question. They earned that right. Just like Chris Nolan and the Batman franchise.

Guess I'll need to change my list.

Happy they pushed it back as releasing them so close makes me question the level of quality ME3 will have.

Why is everyone mentioning Skyrim along with this? Am I the only one who would much rather have had that delayed instead of ME3? Both are looking great but I know which one I'd rather play

" why do people think that releasing in 2011 will make it into a DA2? its a different group of people within bioware working on mass effect 3 "

Turnaround time. There was only a year and four months between the release of Dragon Age Origins and Dragon Age 2, and it showed. This announcement pushed the time between Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3 past the two year mark, and should give them more time to polish. Don't forget, Bioware also has The Old Republic in development, which doesn't help.

@MordeaniisChaos: Well I quite enjoyed some of those improvements... the story was small in regards to the greater plot of the Mass Effect world, but i found that making ME2 a character story, about exploring the pasts of all these interesting and diverse... space people, it was more interesting than ME1, as a cumulative thing.

Also it wasn't that they stripped that stuff due to a lack of time, it was obviously a very deliberate design choice, if they took that much time to do it. Bioware has a lot of RPGs, but a compelling RPG/Shooter hybrid with a good story? Well... no one has that. So I found it to be a pretty refreshing game. And I loved ME1 as well.

I guess it's a matter of taste and what people are into, but no part of that game actually felt rushed to me, it was just a different kind of game. And I have to commend them for trying something that drastically different in a sequel. Few developers would do that.

I won't lie, this really dissapoints me. That being said, this year is so jam packed with huge titles that it may be for the best. I'll probably be playing MK far into next year, along with Skyrim, BF3, LA Noire and Portal 2.

Thank god ME3 doesn't come out this year. Now, it could actually be a worthy successor to ME2 and not rushed out like DA2 was.

Not much of a delay & personally not going to be that upset about the wait, more time for other good games & at least this one should be as good as the other 2 so I'll not be too disappointed when it does come out.

Good, I always thought it was too soon for a sequel anyway. Hopefully Bioware is learning from the mediocre reviews that DA2 received. Though I also hope that this delay won't prompt EA into forcing a multiplayer aspect into the game.

I loved ME  2, but that's fine by me. Skyrim, Batman AC, and Uncharted 3 will take up the time. Didn't we hear just recently that Bioware wasn't sure how it was going to approach multiplayer or something to that effect? That didn't sound good to me...

Not surprised at all, delayed release dates are the norm.
