Mass Effect 3 to (Finally) Support Same-Sex Love Interests

How the new options will play into existing characters, however...

You can have a relationship with whomever in BioWare's Dragon Age series. Male-male? Female-female? Go for it, adventurer! That's not the case in Mass Effect, a consistent source of criticism against the sci-fi epic. That changes with Mass Effect 3, according to a Tweet from executive producer Casey Hudson.

"Happy to confirm #ME3 supports wider options for love interests incl. same-sex for m&f chars, reactive to how you interact w/them in-game," said Hudson in a surprise update yesterday morning.

As for how that will exactly play out, Hudson isn't saying just yet.

"Some game sites saying 'previously straight chars now available for both m&f [male & female] chars' not necessarily true," he clarified. "Will have some new LI's [love interests] in #ME3."

Whether or not you ever encounter these new relationships options in Mass Effect 3, it's great to see the company responding to something players have been asking for. Having the option is what's important.

Finally Bioware has decided that maybe same sex relationships aren't nearly as taboo as inter-species ones.

I'm taking the approach of going all self reinforced story canon on ME3, so that if I never had relations with certain characters before I'll never try to have relations with them in ME3.

I will in replays after my first playthrough, but not until I've completed it with my own canon version of the ME universe save done and completed first.

A same sex relationship was available in the first Mass Effect title. Complete with copulation.

I never really cared much for the relationship thing in Mass Effect. I was connected to my characters, but I didn't feel compelled to do that sort of thing. I never do, unless it's for some easy "romance" achievement.

Not to open a can of worms but I still think this is silly, Shepard has never been a blank slate and people who were expecting to be able to engage in same sex relationships were expecting too much from a character with an established identity that merely allows for some wriggle-room.

Ultimately though if this makes more people happy then it's probably for the best. Whether I thought the initial demand for same sex relationships in ME was slightly unreasonable or not the inclusion of such an option isn't going to effect me at all so it's pretty much a non-issue.

Of course the inclusion of these options isn't likely to prevent there being some kind of shitstorm on release, people will always find a way to complain.

If it forces Shepard to be bisexual then it gives the player less choice. They need to have him state through a dialogue choice what he's in to. "No, I'm not into men/women. Go away."

For obvious reasons though the female Shepard was somewhat more of a blank slate by being bisexual, since I would say 99% of guys don't mind seeing lesbians going at it. There are gay people who play Mass Effect and would like to have a more relatable romance for their Shepard, and it's good that Bioware is making the game more enjoyable for them as well.

God, I cannot believe the amount of ignorance on here.

I thought this community was a lot more open, but all I see is complaining about how it's a bloody option. "Oh no, they are forcing me to potentially be gay, how frightening!"

It's not like if you choose to go with straight love interests you're going to be bi. Shepard's not going to around being all "Yo, I like it every which way." And some dude hitting on your male Shepard makes HIM gay, not YOU.
@modeps: But it was blatantly sexist. So.... I'm not sure that really counts.

@MEATBALL: There is no reason this is unreasonable, first of all, and "wiggle" room is bullshit. You could be a saint, you could be borderline evil, you could be any manner of places in between. There was a LOT of wiggle room. I'd say the decision between sex with a human and an alien is a MUCH bigger amount of "wiggle" room than being able to be gay. It's something that should have been in from the beginning. It IS in RPG, and gay guys were pretty much fucked if they wanted to experience all of the functions of the game in a way that wasn't awkward. Bioware making lesbian relationships but not making gay relationships was sexist, and frankly a little gross. This is 2011. We figured out that gays deserve exactly as much as everyone else already. Now it's time to start acting that way. No offense, but I think your being very close minded. There is plenty of other choice, and that very MUCH defines who your Shepard is. He is not a BLANK slate, but he is a relatively unadorned slate. He is basically a generic soldier destined to do something big. You decide how and what it is that he does. You decide who he gets along with, and for the most part, who he screws. You should be able to pick a homosexual relationship. It makes the game more impactful to gays, because otherwise, the romance crap mind as well not even exist to them. It may be a small part of the game, but it still matters. It's time for gamers to grow up and stop being homophobes. And it's not like there being the option in the game will force you into it. You're not going to accidentally stumble into some dudes backside. If you think Shepard's character is set in stone, you should take a step back, and look at how drastically different a lot of people's idea's of who and what Shepard is all about. For example, I hated the story in ME2 because it totally went against what my original Shepard would do, not to mention all the other glaring issues. He is a human soldier, you pick his upbringing, his war record, you decide what he specializes in, and you decide how much of a dick/realist/idealist/saint he is, and you pick the manner in which he is those things. You pick the exceptions he makes for certain situations, like when something totally unforgivable is done, you might execute a man who you could have allowed to live, despite being, generally, a very forgiving Shepard. He is not quite a blank slate, and he became less of one in ME2, but he still wasn't set in stone.
@gorkamorkaorka: I agree, but only for the sake of it being silly not to be able to point that out. I'm pretty sure they will go the DA:O way and make sure that you can scorn any such advances if you wish. The crap in DA2 was just silly, there should be characters that are GAY and that are STRAIGHT and are BI, not all one big happy orgy group of "I'll screw anything that moves."

My Fem Shep is already lesbefriends with Liara.  You can tell anyway because she has a shaved head.

It's kinda sad that Male Shep felt he had to hide his sexuality for the last two games.

Unfortunately all the games still see sex as the goalpost at the end of the 'romance'. The relationships in this game are about as deep and romantic as a penthouse letter.

It is my understanding that having male homosexual options in games is gay and wrong and makes men ~so uncomfortable~ because they're sheltered children. It's the reason they took the gay romance for Kaidan out in the original and didn't include lesbian romances in ME2.

But now they're in. Maybe. Assuming any backlash at the announcement doesn't cause them to be removed.

I, for one, congratulate Bioware for continuing to (unintentionally?) troll the hell out of straight male gamers while giving the minority something to enjoy.

I don't see whats the big deal for a lot of people. I only played ME 2, but even then, I never thought you could get forced into a relationship without you even knowing... even more, I always used the option to put off some option because I didn't tried to ruin it trying to have the cake and eat it (and ended up being kinda bitchy to all my options but one).

I am pretty sure ME 3 will handle it the same way... If at one point down the conversation your male Sheppard gets some innuendo from Garrus and you don't feel comfortable with it, there is going to be an option that says "sorry dude, not interested...". So I don't know what is the big deal...

Besides, same sex love interests were available in ME 1 too, and not many people complained...

That isn't what the majority of the people arguing about this are worried about. Liara was scripted as a 'bisexual' option, what they hinted at doing now implies the plan on altering characters that they have spent two games building into the same ambiguous sexual orientation that all the romance options in DA2 were. In addition to that distaste, the way the romances in ME2 were handled it adds another fear. If you shot down a character who expressed romantic interest in you during ME2, there was no more dialogue after that. There were no more scripted conversations, and the development stopped at pretty much the 'no' coming from your characters mouth. The worry is that Bioware will throw the blanket of the ambiguous sexuality over every character who you've spent two games getting attached to, and then have their dialogue and your interaction with them cut short when you shoot them down.

It isn't that people don't want homosexual romance options in the fucking game. I'd love to see a gay male or female character, who isn't some strange sexual orientation that relates only to the PC, but as strong homosexual character. Who is written as such. It's lazy writing, especially in regards to how important the interpersonal relationships are in the Mass Effect games, to just opt out of giving the character an orientation.

This might not be the case. From Casey Hudson's twitter:

This is so stupid. I think it hilarious that he put finally in brackets as if it should have been in there in the first place. I think the sex in dragon age and mass effect should be taken out completely because it is really nothing but pointless and annoying. It seems like some kind of weird, awkward, nerdy thing thats in there for people who want to see their video game characters get it on with each other for no real reason. I have played both dragon ages and mass effects, and I always found the sex stuff to be silly and ridiculous. If they could find a way to make believable romantic relationships that contributed to the game in a meaningful way than id be all for it, but as of now its just this crazy thing they throw in there that does nothing but cheapen the characters in the game and the believability of the world.
