Mass Effect 3 Wii U Includes Extended Cut DLC, But...

...EA isn't sure if players will have the option to view the original endings.

No Caption Provided

(There are no spoilers in this post, but beware the comments.)

When Mass Effect 3 arrives on Wii U, the recent Extended Cut downloadable content will be on the disc, too.

"The extended ending is basically going to be part of the game instead," said series producer Michael Gamble to Siliconera this week. "You won’t have to download it."

The Extended Cut downloadable content tweaked and expanded Mass Effect 3’s multiple endings, finales that came under criticism from fans for not providing enough answers and closure. After the downloadable content is acquired by the player, the endings are seamlessly altered, as if these were the original endings BioWare came up with. We know that’s not the truth, though, but will every Wii U owner?

I asked Electronic Arts if Mass Effect 3 players on Wii U will have the option to see both versions of the ending. In essence, giving the the option to turn back the clock and see the original conclusion designed for Mass Effect 3.

The publisher said it “can’t confirm if that choice will be available,” but hopefully we can sway it.

One hopes EA and BioWare include the option, even if the Extended Cut endings are the default. The changes to Mass Effect 3’s final hours are hardly on the level of Greedo shooting first, but as we’ve seen in film (remember E.T.’s walkie talkies?), revisionism is a slippery slope. Mass Effect 3 isn't a heralded classic enshrined in years of acclaim, and players deserve to know how BioWare decided to close out its trilogy before fans demanded more.

Whether you agreed with BioWare's decision to expand on the endings (hint: I didn't), this option is important.

I’ll make sure to keep my eye on this, and report back when EA has an answer.

Why would absolutely anyone anywhere care about this? What terrible reason must you have to want to see the original endings?

It is not a question of playing a game on a different platform. It is a question of a game that is older when newer things are being released. Since we have no release date for the platform or software Mass Effect 3 on WiiU is going to have to compete against what ever is the latest on the other platforms. I like choice but games released like this need to be discounted heavily and even then I wouldn't expect big sales numbers.

I actually know a few people (work colleagues mostly) that bought the first two Mass Effect games on PC and had to start over on the Xbox ME3 because they didnt realise just how different the game would be without the save files. They actually didnt notice until we compared stories of what happened in our games. My point is that anyone can play the 3rd game without playing the ones before, sure they will be missing out on a whole lot of story and even some characters, but the game seems to be complete enough on its own that the WiiU version should be fine for those new to the series.

Now...i wouldnt do it that way but ive got all 3 360 versions of the game so i dont have to make that choice, but people could do it if they wanted to and enjoy what is actually there.

If their going to add the game to the Wii U then add the extended cut because its what most the fans on the other consoles liked more anyway. The real question though is why are they even adding the game to the Wii U? As previously stated on 75% of the other comments, anyone who cares about the series and hence the ending has already played the game. Buying just ME3 not having ME1/2 doesn't really make you care. You have to completely change the game and adopt some of that weird tablet stuff into the game which is man hours and money. Then release it on a completely different console. How is this profitable? No one will buy this game on Wii. Maybe its to introduce Wii gamers to the series for when the release the next Mass Effect without Shepard 3/4 years down the line possibly.

Downloaded the Extended Cut but haven't had time to go back and replay the final mission. I was gonna wait until I've finished my FemShep playthrough before seeing the ending.

If people want to see the shitty old ending then they can just you tubed it

Its weird how the gaming press seems to always side with EA, I can see that they don't mind the ending after all they play dozens of games a month and rush threw them so they can talk about it ect so don't builder up as much attachment to the story but come on wend 90%+ of the people who play it hate a part of the game its safe to say that part of the game sucks

Let's just say it, if even Bioware thinks of the new endings is canon (the true ending) then wasn't all the belly-aching actually the correct side of the argument. It is unpleasant when people you feel are distasteful trolls are proven to be on the correct side of an argument. They argued their side poorly and without much tact from many people's perspective; yet it is hard not to conclude the peopel who complaied about the ending were probably correct.

Broken clocks are correct twice a day, and SOMETIMES trolls have a point.

What difference does it make? Any one who cares for this series will have played it before it's available on the Wii U anyways. The ending was garbage, so what you would get out of it would probably just be more disappointed fans.

I don't really care what set of the terrible endings are included, but they should probably remove the "middle finger to people who didn't like it" option where it ends if you shoot him.

First i want to say i love the Mass Effect series, so i don't understand any of this because with out playing the first two games will anything in ME3 make sense to a wii u player? And i agree with all the other comments that how many people who will only own a wii or wii u even care about these games.

I like the comic on the PS3 better than actually playing ME1, the gameplay in that game, on the PC at least is sometimes painful

Really? You're getting up in arms about this? Say what you will about artistic integrity, but those extended cut endings do their job of making the ending less stupid/terrible. Also who is going to buy it on the Wii U in the first place?

Wait, never mind the ending.. So you can play the 1st one on Xbox and PC, the 2nd one on xbox, PC and Playstation 3 and the third one on Xbox, PC, Playstation 3 and Wii U. How is this going to sell, who is going to play a fragmented experience. Genarally speaking, whatever format you started the saga on, your most likely to finish it on given the continous story threads you bring forward with each sequel. ME3 is probably the least stand alone of the triolgy.

EDIT: Apologies if this has already been mentioned ad nausim, BUT I WAS EATING MY LUNCH.

This is silly, anyone who's interested in the franchise has already bought and played Mass Effect 3. Who's this for? I really don't see people who didn't give a shit about the franchise until now, suddenly going out an buying ME3 because it's on the Wii U. Nintendo paid EA a bunch of money so that they don't release another console without any interesting launch titles, that's what this story should be about.

The only question is will they get ME2 as well (since it isn't copyrighted by Microsoft) or at least an option to make some decision for ME1&2 like the PS3 version of Mass Effect 2 offered? (via a comic, cutscenes, whatever works!)

I'm usually right there with you, Patrick, but preserving the original Mass Effect 3 endings for posterity on a Nintendo console coming out almost a year after the game's initial release strikes me as a goddamn weird place to take a stand. Are you going to demand they don't add any goofy tablet shit to it, either? For art? I know the games press has a bug up it's collective ass to condemn what happened with the player backlash here, and it's not as if the slippery slope argument has no merit, but is it any more correct to pressure Bioware/EA to release a game with content players really don't want/are blithely unaware of to satisfy industry journalists' sense of moral outrage? Nobody asked George Lucas to change Star Wars and no one's asking you all to badger EA into changing Mass Effect back.

Whether you agreed with BioWare's decision to expand on the endings (hint: I did), this is a horse too high, my friend.

People either a) rebuy this with still inferior graphics to the pc version (if they have it on a different console) or b) are serious Nintendo fans playing the third game in a trilogy as a way of getting into the series, will not care either way so this whole question is moot.

The more pressing issue is that since there is no way to carry over choices and events from the other games (since they were not on Wii) then why does this game even exist?

Only if WiiU owners somehow dislike having logical outcomes and less nebulous writing.

They should fix the ending in the Wii U version by having Mario shoot in from Spaceship Mario and proceed to destroy all the Reapers. That's the best ending. I would buy it again for that.

I'm not sure what the point of having the originals on there would be. The Extended Cut is just that, a longer, more detailed ending. It doesn't change anything, just has a lot more fleshed out stuff in it. Don't know why you would prefer the old ones.

The original endings fit just fine on youtube. Leave it out, they aren't missing much.

What's the alternative, a ridiculous little pop up asking you which ending you'd like to receive? Because effectively that's what the original ending was, so it could potentially get very meta.

Bioware did the right thing in changing the endings, I completely hated the original ones and was part of the protest against it. It is hard not to considering how badly they botched it up in the first place.

The only problem I have now is that I will never buy a Bioware game with any confidence, and will hold back from buying especially if I hear Casey Hudson is on the game. I used to preorder them without a thought but now...no way. Very sad.

Why even bother releasing the game on the Wii-U? Total waste of time.

I don't understand why you'd hope for the original endings to be present, Patrick, considering the revisions are all for the better. Seems like a dumb and petty thing to take a stand on and it's not an important option to have at all. Shitty endings vs not as shitty endings. I wonder which people will pick.

I don't see the point of showing Wii U owners the "original ending". The extended cut ending is basically the same as the original ending but with 5-minutes worth of added cut-scenes—nothing about the extended cut makes the ending any different, it's just a little longer. The "original ending" would just be the same as the extended cut but 5 minutes shorter. Why would BioWare allow that? It wouldn't make any sense.

I also don't think BioWare likes the idea of letting Wii U owners know that, "hey guys, we fucked up when we developed this game a year ago on the Xbox, so here's the shit ending that we originally made AND the still-kinda-shit longer ending we released months later." It's not something I see them doing for multiple reasons.

The endings are still bad on an objective and creative level. You don't end a story as big as Mass Effect with a fricken Deus Ex Machina ten minutes before the end.

That's bad storytelling!

This is not Deus Ex Machina. They built the Crucible throughout the entire game and the delivery of the Crucible is what allows Shepard to make the choice. The Catalyst serves as little more than a guide and observer, similar to Vigil from ME1. They could have taken him out, but then you wouldn't know what the fuck was happening. Even still, you could have stumbled your way into stopping the Reapers. NOT DEM.

So it's a deus ex machina where you spend the entire game building the machina.

Throughout the entire game you have Hackett saying that he doesn't know what it's capable of but he thinks the energy released would be enough to destroy the Reapers, and Illusive saying that it's possible to use the Catalyst to control the Reapers. Then you get to the end of the game and it turns out they're both right. What's Deus Ex Machina about that? That it has an AI routine to guide its use? Did you expect to agree with the Reapers when they explained why they love Reapin' so much?

(I think the synthesis ending is a little dumb and weird, but that's why I didn't choose it)
