Michael Fassbender Decides He Would Like to be In an Assassin's Creed Movie

The Prometheus and A Dangerous Method star will co-produce and feature in Ubisoft's eventual film adaptation of the video game series.

I'm sorry, what was I talking about? I got lost in your Fassbender death stare.
I'm sorry, what was I talking about? I got lost in your Fassbender death stare.

It's been a while since we heard about Ubisoft's little film studio project, which the video game publisher planned to use to independently fund films based on the company's various franchises. We also hadn't heard much about that Assassin's Creed movie idea in a while, at least not since it was first kicked around. Now we have updates on both of those things, and they come along with a massive, turgid Fassboner.

Yes, Michael Fassbender, the actor best known for his roles in films like Prometheus, X-Men: First Class, Inglourious Basterds, and Shame, has signed on with his own production company to co-produce and star in Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed adaptation, according to Variety. His DMC Films company will be working in direct tandem with Ubisoft Motion Pictures to raise capital. Sony had once been talked about as a potential distributor for the film, and may still be involved.

We roll our eyes when we talk about video game movies, and often with good reason. However, Fassbender's involvement in this particular adaptation does give one some reason to be excited. On top of being a top-flight actor, Fassbender's pretty choosy about his projects. Similarly, one gets the impression Ubisoft's being pretty protective about how this franchise is brought to the big screen, so who knows? We might even get a decent movie out of this. It'll depend heavily on who is hired to write and direct, of course, but this is as solid a starting point for a video game movie as I've ever read about.

Of course, we have absolutely no idea what portions of the AC mythology will be plundered for the screenplay, nor do we know which character Fassbender will be playing. Altair? Ezio? Probably not this new Connor guy, but hey, who knows? As long as Michael Fassbender is all, "Uh uh uh" with a hidden blade at some point, that's all that really matters, right?

If Fassbender is in it, then it'll at least have one good actor attached.

I think Ubi has a chance at making a good action flick here. Ubisoft seems to have learned a few things after making, the well made yet poorly received, Prince of Persia movie. Regardless, I'm a big fan of the franchise, so I'm really hoping they don't screw this up.

Why not Nolan North? He's not just a voice actor, at least that would create more consistancy between the video game and the full feature movie

Well, he's also a fair bit older than Desmond. Also, it's Fassbender. He can do no wrong. (Sort of).

So, in the context of a film, would they have the same guy play Desmond AND whoever he jumps into, just like, with a beard? That would make the most sense in that context, right? Like, he's still seeing himself looking like himself even while in the animus?

Interesting.

The more I think about it, the more an Assassin's Creed movie seems like an interesting idea. It's heavily story focused unlike a lot of games that have been turned into movies (Doom, Tomb Raider, Prince of Persia, etc) and the action in the game is very cinematic and could lend itself well to the big screen.

I'm betting that the Assassin's Creed movie will not include the main characters from the games, but tell another story in that universe.

The Prince of Persia Movie was alright, if all-be-it a bit bland of a story.

I don't know. I don't hope for adaptations anymore, what with them seeming to constantly get people who don't care about the source material so not coming up with good ways to use it and create a decent movie.

Fassbender is great, but I'll still wait and see. I can't get excited for something like this anymore.

I think they should do a movie set in the same universe, but not be about Desmond, Altair, Ezio, or Connor. Have it set in another time period or maybe muliple time periods. Have it be a companion piece for the games, not a retelling.

Nolan North needs to play Desmond. And get Kristen Bell to play Lucy, and Fassbender as a new Assassin ancestor of Desmond's. It'd be cool to be more recent, like in WWI.

Dunno what you guys like so much about Michael Fassbender. He was ok in Eden Lake and Inglourious Basterds, I liked him in Centurion and have yet to watch my A Dangerous Method DVD. He's ok, but he doesn't really stand out in my opinion. Maybe my female eyes are missing something.

Yes. You are absolutely right. Didn't realise how big a role Fassbender had in this, colour me surprised. Hope it turns out well.

You haven't watched his best performances! Watch Hunger, it's absolutely mesmerising and Shame, although the film is quite as good Fassbender carries it.

Unlike a lot of games, Assassin's Creed actually has a story that might translate well to the movie screen.  It could end up being like another Matrix trilogy, but hopefully better.

Because Michael Fassbender is better than Nolan North and provides an actual star to a genre of movie that suffers from a lack of such a thing.

Fassbender had some good stabbing in X-men First Class so I'm confident he'll be able to stab dudes in the face and neck in a movie pretty well.

Although I agree that he's not the everything and a side of fries that people make him out to be, he was easily the best thing about Prometheus, and he's also excellent in Hunger. He's a pretty top notch actor, so I'm mildly more optimistic about this movie than I was before.

(also to everyone saying the Prince of Persia movie was pretty alright; were we even watching the same movie? i hated it)

He's a great actor. But he also made me feel completely inadequate while watching Shame with my girlfriend.
