Microsoft, EA Claim FIFA Isn't Causing Rash of Xbox Live Hacks

Hundreds of people are noticing FIFA showing up on their compromised accounts. What gives? Here's what we've found.

No Caption Provided

Xbox Live is an extremely popular service, featuring a bunch of users with credit cards oh-so-conveniently attached to their accounts, so it’s an obvious target for scammers. Getting emails from users who’ve been had their accounts compromised is nothing new; it happens every single day. Tide goes in, tide goes out.

There was something different about the stream of emails from the past week, with a bunch of users mentioning FIFA. The first confusing tip-off these users had was finding FIFA 11 in their game library, despite never having played it.

“12th october 2011, i get a phone call while i am at work off my brother,” wrote one user. “he asks me what on earth am i doing at home and why the hell am i playing Fifa 12 ( he knows i hate football) i explain i am at work and i would not play fifa 12 even if i was being forced by a knife point held at my groin with the imminent threat of genital removal.”

Xbox Live's interface has changed over the years, as has Microsoft's security responses.
Xbox Live's interface has changed over the years, as has Microsoft's security responses.

“I had my account hacked back at the beginning of August,” said another. “First time that had happened on any system. I had my account suspended the day it happened but it took over a month to get my account restored. The crazy part was they didn't buy anything with my points. When I got my account back the only activity was they played some FIFA '12.”

Similar stories can be found inside my inbox from dozens of different readers. Something was up. A few noticed achievements for FIFA 11 or FIFA 12 had been unlocked, others found hundreds of dollars missing from their bank accounts thanks to a series of point purchases, and many noticed the people accessing their account were interested in purchasing tons and tons of cards for FIFA Ultimate Team.

The common thread, however, was FIFA. But why? How? FIFA? A Google search brings up exponentially more stories of digital soccer woes from users of Xbox Live. To Microsoft’s credit, many appear quickly resolved.

“With the popularity of FIFA globally, and the sheer number of players playing the game online, FIFA is an obvious target for phishers and frauds,” said an Electronic Arts representative to me. “This is why we try to educate FIFA players to take measures to keep their accounts safe.”

EA outlines steps to protect your account in a message board post, which is comprehensive and worth reading, but its sheer existence suggests account exploitation has been an issue EA has been forced to pay attention to.

“We haven’t seen a spike or increase in reports of FIFA 12 players having their accounts hacked,” said the rep. “With the launch of FIFA 12 it likely has just shifted renewed focus onto this particular game.”

A good portion of users with compromised accounts found evidence of card packs purchased for FIFA Ultimate Team.
A good portion of users with compromised accounts found evidence of card packs purchased for FIFA Ultimate Team.

Microsoft, however, seemed to acknowledge there had been a spike in activity lately.

“We do not have any evidence the Xbox Live service has been compromised,” said a representative. “We take the security of our service seriously and work on an ongoing basis to improve it against evolving threats. However, a limited number of members have contacted us regarding unauthorized access to their accounts by outside individuals. We are working with our impacted members directly to resolve any unauthorized changes to their accounts.”

The company did outright reject any running theories--of which I’ve heard many at this point--running around the Internet about a major security glitch exploitable in the FIFA games.

“It’s not a title-specific issue and is coincidental that FIFA has been tied to a number of compromised accounts,” said the rep.

Recon armor was something that had to be bestowed upon you, making those with it a target.
Recon armor was something that had to be bestowed upon you, making those with it a target.

The largest issue facing Xbox Live and similar services is social engineering, in which outsiders attempt to trick customer service systems into unlocking accounts. I filed a story with MTV News back in 2008 about Xbox Live’s problems with social engineering, where even Bungie Studios employees were not safe. At the time, users were being targeted because their accounts had gained access to Halo 3’s elusive multiplayer “Recon” armor, which could not be unlocked in the game. It was special.

Think about how much information about you is on the Internet. Can you imagine it being terribly difficult for someone to fill in the blanks? How many different security codes are linked to your mother’s maiden name, which is probably featured on her not-properly-secured Facebook page?

Then, remember the PlayStation Network information implosion. And the Gawker Media incident. The list goes on.

"People don't hack accounts by using programs and any other bullsh-- that you hear around [Xbox Live]," said a user who publicly admitted to compromising Microsoft’s systems back in 2008. "It's as simple as picking up the phone."

It's more complicated than that, of course, but the underlying point remains the same.

Microsoft has made reforms to its system, but no system is perfect, and social engineering remains a threat. As we become more comfortable with more information available, there will be more ammunition for those hoping to take advantage of us.

Halo 3 spurred these issues three years ago, today it’s FIFA 12. Different day, different game, same issues.

In the meantime, maybe change your password and alter your mom's Facebook privacy settings.

I was just hacked, as well. Fortunately, the Xbox customer support representative that I spoke to was very helpful and friendly. If this happens to you make sure to change your password right away so they can't get access to your account again.

Yep mine was hacked too... At least with Sony I did not loose anything of value. I had over 5000 MS points and when I called support they said they will report the incident. While I was on the phone, the person was actually using my Microsoft Points! I told them "the guy is logged in right now can you catch him?" "We have reported this to our fraud investigations team." Still on the phone the guy got down to 20MS points. Then I called back just to ask when I could expect to be refunded my money and the guy said that the last person forgot to lock my account so that person still could have made a purchase. Nice. "Let me take care of that for you right away" he says. Why the hell did the other support person not take care of that? Anyway then the guy says, "by the way can I ask you something?" I said "sure". He then proceeds to ask me how I managed to get a family subscription for free... Wait? Are you kidding? Now you are accusing me of stealing? I have been an Xbox Live member since the day it started and I buy a year anytime it is on sale. So when I switched to a family membership it was free (I had enough extra time built up) and the guy is asking me how I managed to do this. They really need to get it together. Can you please look at the 4000+ MS points that someone just stole from me buying FIFA shit with instead of asking me how I bought my Gold membership?

My XBOX Live account was hacked by a thief in Europe. They stole Microsoft Points (we pay for these points via credit card) and purchased additional points (which they used). I immediately was notified of this purchase and was able to recover my account. I logged into my XBOX Live account and I was able to discover who stole these points and who hacked into my account because they were still in the system playing a game called FIFA 12 Soccer. I called Microsoft and reported the incident. I gave them the email address and gamer ID of the thief. The customer service rep at Microsoft indicated my account would be suspended for 25 days while Microsoft investigated the incident. This happened on 10/12/2011. It's been 33 days and the company still won't tell me when my account will be unsuspended. They have not bothered to communicate anything to me indicating the status. I followed up with their customer service representative and the acknowledged that they were going to need more time. I believe these hacks are pervasive and larger than Microsoft is willing to admit. Based on the Internet research I have done, this FIFA 12 Soccer hack is widespread. My issue is we use our XBOX Live to view Netflix, play video games, do video conferencing across the US amongst our family and we view TV & purchased movie content. This account is the center of our family's entertainment and communication with one another. Being suspended for another person hacking into my account (through no fault of my own, as best as I can tell) is simply unacceptable. The lack of communication is disappointing enough, but the feeling of being punished twice (first by the perpetrator and second by Microsoft) is simply unacceptable. I have sent Microsoft emails via their XBOX Live forum but no response. I believe these hacks are a very serious issue to Microsoft and perhaps are covering up how widespread it is. Thank you.

NeoGaf has two good threads about this, the latest is http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=451055 where a guys asks others to post if they've been hit by this thing lately. I recommend giving it a read, and the better business bureau a call, because something's up on Microsoft's side of things and it may very well be their support line, since it has hit people who haven't gotten phished, people who haven't had any EA related account ever, and some who don't even own an Xbox 360.

Just got around to reading this, and immediately removed the two credit cards I have associated with my gamertag. They're only on there for buying points, as I buy year-long redeem cards for Live itself.

Looks like I'll just buy points cards from now on, too. Heh.

Edit: Should also mention that the passwords for all of my accounts for the various services and websites I use are different. I encourage everyone to do this.

I just got "Fifa'd" myself about an hour or so ago. 9200 MS points charged to my account - and then had the privilege of watching the prick appear on my friend's list "playing" FIFA 2012 while on the phone with MS Customer Service.

I messaged the guy and he quickly signed off.

Anyway - MS Customer service tells me my options are:

- Shutdown my account while they investigate the issue. The charges will still be applied to my account until it's resolved and it can take up to 1.5 months.

- Option 2 "Pay the charges", change your password and continue playing Xbox Live.

I almost fell out of my chair when the rep said that. She said "she understands that might not be something I would want to do, but it IS an option.

I just laughed and said that has to be the stupidest thing I ever heard - and I'll just dispute the charges with AMEX - she then replied "That's probably a better idea".

I also informed her of the culprit's gamertag (JoshuaNiixon) and she confirmed she does in fact see him playing FIFA 2012 but there is nothing she can do about it.

Wow.

Wow.

Last week my account was also hacked. After recovering my gamertag I noticed all my points were spent and the hacker had bought 2 FIFA items. Luckily I had removed my CC info from xbl after the whole PSN fiasco and a call to a rep returned all of my missing points.

I guess the moral of this story is use point cards and NEVER TRUST SOCCER!

@theodacourt: I just got hit with this this morning. The EA thing people are floating around seems pretty plausible to me as I just got and was recently playing an EA sports game and I've always been super careful with my account information and password.

Already talked with xbox live supprt, but I have to let my phone charge again before I can call my bank and hopefully get my $80 back.

Whether or not FIFA 11, 12 or MS or EA Customer Service is being used in some way to access users accounts, the REASON people are hacking accounts if BECAUSE of FIFA DLC. Remove the DLC, remove the problem.

This happened to me a few hours ago. £51 gone to buy 6000 points. After resetting my xbox live password I could see the points going down as I navigated the website. No details were changed except for my xbox password. I've let xbox lock my account up so that if they get in again they can't do anything. I think I can still play offline though so that's alright. I'm just worried that any achievements earned might be lost when the account is eventually freed up, even though I really shouldn't. If that were to happen I may as well use a bum silver account to play on anyway. I might make the time to finish Persona 3 FES instead! Microsoft, if I don't get all of my money back then it will be wrath I'm afraid.

Xbox took my console serial and I think they're using it to see if the purchase was made from my console. Seems pretty smart and hopefully it's the beginning of a standardised action plan for this exact situation, and should help everything be resolved sooner rather than later.

yeah i'm assuming that there was some kind of breach for there to be so many incidences of fraudulent purchases, but at the same time, a lot of people are just plain stupid and have bad passwords, bad security questions, etc.

The #1 lesson from this is do not keep your credit card on file with anyone, Microsoft, Sony, Steam, EA, Blizzard, anyone. It can and will be compromised. That's the only real way to avoid things like this happening. As secure as something is, someone will find a way around it.

@Sander: It seems unlikely to be some enormous financial security breach involving FIFA.

It's more likely that since FIFA is pretty much the most obsessively played game in Europe in a lot of gamer circles, there is a secondary market similar to gold farmers, but instead of gold it's a bunch of people that try to abuse "forgot your password", customer service call centers, etc., to gain access to Xbox Live accounts so they can buy a bunch of the stupid in-game trading cards, then transfer them to whatever account paid for this super illegal "service".

So Microsoft stonewalls "Investigator" Klepek and all he can come up with is USER ERROR?

Sounds like an article from 2005 saying Xbox 360s are overheating because they're being kept in confined spaces.

Glad Arstechnica pointed the finger the other way.

@PenguinDust: And violated hard. I haven't heard much about money being stolen from the PSN breach, yet we are talking 10's of thousands of dollars if we extrapolate this thread out to the actual number of affected accounts.

Xbox needs to make a statement about this shit. I don't think mine had to do with Fifa, because whoever jacked my tag used it to download points, and purchase arcade games.

Honestly a system where you can easily recover gamertags and use them to purchase things is looking to be a pretty hazardous thing. I think they need to just not allow console to console recovery of tags without the help of customer support, that's all there is to it. Yeah it might be more inconvenient, but people are getting ripped off here.

[EDIT] Badass that sucks. I hope that it doesn't take 58 days for them to recover me, but I can't imagine I'm going to get any luckier than you. Honestly, head down the to courthouse and file a small claims case, it's unacceptable that it is taking this long for them to investigate. In most cases, like I'm sure yours as well as mine it should be easy enough to see that my tag was recovered to somewhere (most likely out of this country) immediately used to purchase points, and then buy things off marketplace. How hard is that to see on their end. Especially as the MS reps put it "With their Men in Black" on the case.

I've about had it with this waiting, I'm trying to be polite, but I'm not some 15 year old kid that has shit like this happen all the time. I'm 31, I like to play games sure, but when I trust a company with my personal information, and a financial outlet, I expect to be protected. I certainly expect prompt service when their lax security service allows for a situation where I get stolen from.

I wonder what my rights are if it turns out that whoever stole my tag lived in the states. In reality I would think I was entitled to the information so I can press charges.

This exact problem happened to me back in the beginning of August. My card was charged for about $100 worth of MS points, all of which were apparently used to buy FIFA DLC. It's been 58 days since my account was locked and Microsoft began their investigation, and I've called them three times since then(actually on the phone with them right now) and they're unable to give me an explanation as to why it's taking so long. I mean, the reps I'm talking to are at least nice about it, and that probably has to do with the fact that I'm not flipping out at them here from the other end, but they seem to have no information whatsoever. It's pretty frustrating.

I figured they'd picked FIFA because you can spend the most money on it - you can buy as many Ultimate Team booster packs as you want with your MS Points (or, in this case, someone else's MS Points).

Most likely from Brasil. Over there they don't beleive in buying new games. You go in the stores and it's all burn games. It's a normal thing over there. So Xboxlive accounts are bought there for cheap and they have 0 problem with it, it's casual and normal. But yeah ut's not just brasil, it's many other poor countries where buying movies, games... isn't too cheap, so they get them burned.

My Xbox Live account was hacked today. They spent 75 dollars and then tried to spend 50 more, but my credit card company put a hold on the account and contacted me. I got the charges refunded from my credit card, but Microsoft told me I would not have access to my account for approximately 25 business days.

This means that I can't play Forza 4 unless I start over and all of the games I preordered will just be sitting there waiting. I understand this kind of thing happens sometime, but I feel like I am being punished for someone else breaking the law. I definitely won't be putting my credit card information on my account anymore.

@Bzchan: Thats exactly what happened to me, my EA origins email address was changed, I got no alert from EA like most websites do when you try to change your log in information "if you really sent this request click here to confirm" Nothing like that, just its been changed, and then BAM my xbox live account hijacked. EA needs to take responsibility for this its clearly them to blame.

Interesting. I had my XBL account hacked prior to FIFA's release and I don't think it was social engineering since I've never spoken to anyone about my account or password. I hadn't even turned on my Xbox for months. What's really funny is that after all the bruhaha over Sony's system getting hacked, it was my Microsoft account which was violated.

I removed all my payment options from XBL just in case. I'll use prepaid cards until they figure something out and give us a better answer than "it's coincidental". It's not an Xbox Live or a FIFA issue, but hundreds of people are having their Xbox Live accounts compromised and used to specifically purchase FIFA DLC? I don't buy it.

Could it be that EA profiles are easily compromised and many people use that same exact email and password combination for Xbox Live? I would be interested to know how many of the compromised Live account holders also have EA profiles. I know you can hardly play an EA game without a profile on their site and it wouldn't have to be for FIFA. FIFA just seems to be where most of the thieves are spending the money. Oddly, you would think EA could trace what account these FUT cards are being traded to after they are purchased on the hacked account.

A friend and I played Gears 3 together on the same system the Thursday after it came out. The next day, $60 in XBL points were added to my account with my credit card and 4 days later $200 was added to my friend's.
