Microsoft's E3 2013 Press Briefing: Silent But Deadly

Few real surprises reared their head at Microsoft's E3 event, but at least we know how much the system will cost now (a lot).

Going into today's press conference, Microsoft swore up and down that this would be the event where the console maker brought the games. After its tepidly-received Xbox One unveiling event, Microsoft knew it had some ground to make up with its core audience, the folks who were less interested in sports partnerships and ways to make their cable signal feed into their gaming consoles. In this regard, Microsoft did not fail to deliver, at least as far as quantity is concerned. In terms of quality? That may be more up for debate.

NEXT. GEN. HORSIES. (Also, Kiefer Sutherland)
NEXT. GEN. HORSIES. (Also, Kiefer Sutherland)

The show did at least open with a bang, with a traditionally baffling and ludicrously weird trailer for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. The trailer was replete with the kinds of Kojima-isms we've come to expect from the franchise (bizarre asides, nonsensical character descriptions, operatic levels of weird melodrama), albeit now with the added bonus of horsies that can be ridden--stealthily, no less! Kojima even briefly joined Don Mattrick on stage to praise the power of the Xbox One, before shuffling off almost as quickly as he arrived.

Before Microsoft got too heavily into the Xbox One business, it interestingly diverged into a bit of Xbox 360 news. Namely, it unveiled a new version of the system, form-fitted to more closely resemble the look of the company's new system. The big surprise? It's reportedly available starting today. Granted, it's questionable how many people really need to be buying new Xbox 360s at this point. Perhaps this is a tacit acceptance of the fact that people will have to keep buying new Xbox 360s to play their existing libraries, after their old units eventually overheat and explode? Or maybe it was just an excuse to give the World of Tanks guys some stage time (as that game is headed to the 360).

From there, it was effectively a cavalcade of games. Crytek's Ryse was given a lengthy on-stage demo next, showing off the newly upgraded Xbox One visuals, as well as a long series of quicktime events in an ancient Roman setting. Once deemed a Kinect exclusive, it appears this is no longer the case, what with all the button prompts and whatnot.

Ryse was one of only a few games to get more than a couple of minutes of stage time. Most of the games most heavily pushed were of the expected lot. Battlefield 4 showed off a new battle sequence (after a long delay due to audio issues at the event, which plagued several other demos as well); Capcom debuted Dead Rising 3 as a darker, less overtly silly looking sequel exclusive to the Xbox One; Forza Motorsport 5 offered a genuflecting demonstration of an in-game McLaren (while also unveiling its new "Drivatar" features); and Respawn Entertainment showed off its mech-and-jetpack multiplayer shooter, Titanfall (which actually looked pretty great). And, of course, there was a new Halo game trailer (for a 2014 entry in the series), as is generally custom.

Nope, we still have no idea just what the hell is going on in Quantum Break.
Nope, we still have no idea just what the hell is going on in Quantum Break.

All of those are unquestionably big games, but few were truly surprising. The new games that did manage to surprise were, regrettably, given little stage time. Rare's unveiling of its new Killer Instinct game was primarily relegated to a brief trailer and a stunningly awkward live demo featuring two Microsoft producers--who, by the way, were primarily there to show off new SmartGlass connectivity. Remedy's Quantum Break was given a bit more on-screen time, though the premise and mechanics of the game remain maddeningly opaque at this point. In fact, the only truly surprising new game to get a lengthy demo was Project Spark, a creation-focused game from Microsoft Studios that looked a bit like the company's answer to LittleBigPlanet. Though the demo occasionally veered into Medieval Moves demo levels of banter awkwardness, the game showed a lot of potential in its focus on user-generated content.

There were other very cool looking games too, though few of them got much time on stage at all. Insomniac's new parkour-meets-weaponized energy drinks shooter Sunset Overdrive looked patently insane (albeit in a potentially very entertaining way); The Witcher 3 trailer reminded us why The Witcher is a franchise we still care very much about; we received only a terribly teasing look at Capybara Games' intriguing new roguelike, Below; Panzer Dragoon creator Yukio Futatsugi's new game, Crimson Dragon, had a brief (and regrettably audio-less) trailer; and Swery 65's new game, D4, even got a super brief mention. Two things I never expected to hear mentioned on a major press conference stage: Swery 65's name, and the word "roguelike."

Between all those games, there was little time for system-related housekeeping. Apart from that too-long-running SmartGlass demo, Microsoft spent very little time talking about the Xbox One hardware or UI. That's fine, considering how much time was dedicated to those things at the unveiling event. That meant that news like the elimination of Microsoft Points for the new console's digital store, as well as the system's price point, were essentially breezed past. However, the slightly rushed way that Microsoft unveiled both the price and release window for the console came off a bit less like a result of limited stage time, and more a way to brush past a bit of bad news. The revelation that the system would come this November was hardly a surprise, though the price of $499 was perhaps a bit more so.

I realize this is hardly expected to be some big, millions-of-copies seller, but I would have liked more than like 10 seconds of Below footage. It looked cool!
I realize this is hardly expected to be some big, millions-of-copies seller, but I would have liked more than like 10 seconds of Below footage. It looked cool!

Which isn't to say that people didn't expect an expensive console. Still, $499 definitely puts Xbox One on the high side of what was expected, and the revelation that the price had not been adjusted for European currency was a real kick in the junk for that whole audience. In pounds and Euros, that price roughly translates to something like $660. Yeowch.

While Microsoft unquestionably delivered the games today, I am left wondering if those games made the argument for the Xbox One that the company hoped for. There were big tentpole franchises, some new reveals, and some genuine indie curiosities, but at a price like $499, and based on some of the initial responses I've seen, it doesn't seem quite like Microsoft made believers out of those who took issue with the Xbox One's first presentation. Fortunately, we'll have the opportunity to see many of the games shown today up-close and personal from the E3 show floor. Here's hoping that some of these games show better in-person than in all-too-brief stage demos.

yah this. $660ish? go fuck yourself Microcock. unreal.

do we have price on games yet? lemme guess...$70

I don't give a fuck about Kinect crap. Not into motion bullshit. And it's part of why the price is so up there.

Won't be surprised if PS4 is the same..but no way in shit am I buying either at that price...I'll wait for sales or price drops if I even get them.

Either way it'll be cheaper to wait a month...spend maybe $100 more on PC parts and have something more powerful than either of them will ever be for a longer time period.

Underwhelmed with Microsoft's press conference especially considering the better versions of the games they showed will be on the PS4.

The conference didn't blow me away, there were some solid titles and a Halo game that is coming next year but nothing that demanded I should buy the console day one.

@ez123: Well since you were already being stupidly pedantic in trying to suggest that I somehow ignored a bunch of games that looked good, it seemed like the right time to inform you that no, most of what was there was not worth feeling anything about.

I fully expected both consoles to be 500, so no surprise there for me. The only "exclusive" that really caught my eye was Dead Rising 3. Love me some Dead Rising, but not 500 dollar love..

Disappointing conference. Please Sony, don't let me down.

Edit: Quantum Break looked interesting as well.

Only 5 exclusives and none of them looked interesting and the most of the non-exclusives didn't look interesting either besides a few, but no reason to buy the console when I can get them on PC

500 dollars when PS4 has been rumored to in the 400-450 area for a while

Completely ignoring everything wrong with their console and there is no interviews allowed.

If you are excited for this in anyway you really must hate video games. It's not like you can play those 5 exclusives without an internet connection anyways.

Nowhere was the correct answer.

You can be as bewildered as you want, people have different tastes. I really don't care about something like Killer Instinct but to reply to someone with "How could you possibly be excited???!!" is dumb.

I thought it was an excellent showcase for their games (missed the last 10 minutes or so), lots of actual gameplay shown which is always nice. But even at $200 it doesn't make me forget their plans for its connectivity and DRM.

And was it me, or did Sunset Overdrive look a lot more like Overstrike than Fuse did?

Edit - WTF @ Assassin's Creed 2! There have been 3 AC games since then...this is the best they can do to counter PS+??

They had a lot of games, but it was a pretty weird mishmash, the only game that looked like something I would definitely be interested in was Titan Fall and that's coming to PC anyway.

Well, nothing of interest for me except for Titanfall. That looks great. But if it's on the PC I may just go in that direction. Looking forward to hear what Sony has in store.

They announced it as an Xbox One exclusive.

Incorrect. PC and Xbox One, with an Xbox 360 version outsourced to another developer.

See that's what I hate about console makers calling games "exclusives" just because they're not on the other console...

They shouldn't be allowed to do that shit.

Just to re-affirm what was already said, here's the press release from Game Informer: http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2013/06/10/july-cover-reveal-respawn-entertainment-titanfall.aspx

I'm surprised to hear that a lot of y'all thought the games were impressive. The indie roguelike and the Panzer Dragoon clone looked cool, and MGS5 -- a multiplatform release -- seemed promising, but that was it for me. That Spark game looked like a not-very-fun cross between Populous, From Dust, and LittleBigPlanet. I'm sure Forza will be excellent, but will it be that much better than Grid 2 and the new Gran Turismo? Will it be better than DriveClub?

I understand that fans of the FPS genre can tell the difference between games like CoD and Battlefield, or Titanfall and Destiny, but to me, they're all alike, and not interesting. I also don't care for most Arkham Asylum/Ninja Gaiden style beat-em-ups. (These are just my preferences; I like strategy games, immersive role-playing games, arcadey old-school stuff, and games like Katamari, Portal, Pikmin and Odin Sphere that try to introduce new play concepts.) So there wasn't anything in the MS presentation that appealed to me.

I'm sure that those demos showed some graphical improvements from the current PC standard . . . but if so, the improvements were too subtle for me to detect. The Xbox One and PS4 games I've seen look current-gen to me. (Ryse, by the way, looked TER-rible. Lousy dialogue, lousy graphics, familiar gameplay, familiar setting.)

We'll see what Sony's showing tonight . . . but my feeling at this point is that I'll just collect retro games and play on PC for the next few years.

I'm a late adopter so I'll be amongst those who wait and see how it all shakes out. It served me well last gen/current where I waited for the less flaky Xbox 360 models, and I didn't have any probs with their heat/life. I've kinda given up on the owning multiple systems thing, so for now, I'll still have to say I'm not interested in Sony's console offerings, but wish their users well, same with Nintendo. My sticking points will be DRM and the used gaming market, both of which may see me retire from the console market altogether, though I have my PC issues as well.

Only exclusive I really wanted to play was Quantum Break. If I had a One, I'd also probably play Titanfall and Below but neither is enough of a draw to make me spend $500 (not too mention my issues with Microsoft over the NSA business, the internet/drm stuff, Kinect, etc.)

Holy shit that was negative. Why complain that it was rushed and shit was breezed by when they announced an ton of games and for me that doesn't read every fucking videogame blog out there, there were a bunch of surprises and games I wanted to see more of. And they sold me on Smartglass 100%. The ability to launch and search for matches as well as manage inventory and shit like that sounds awesome. They are taking all the things people don't like to use in a console interface(going through menus) and putting that shit on smartglass where you can use touch to make things go faster. And the fact that you can just go from game to game like that is awesome too.

The $499 price point was no surprise. Those who thought something else were just kidding themselves. And since fucking when has american prices been adjusted for European markets. Never, that's fucking when. Where the fuck comes the expectations that it would happen this time? Don't get me wrong, I'm not fucking happy about it, but after fucking forever I'm not expecting shit to change. Get real people.

I enjoyed that conference and they showed a fuckton of games(something EVERYONE demanded, but for some reason now think it's the fucking worst thing ever since they didn't show them for 50min a piece) and sold me on features like Kinect and Smartglass since they will make navigating the Xbox One much easier. Kinect wont revolutionize gaming in any fucking way, it will just give quicker access to the console. I don't want to play Kinect only games but I will use it to navigate the system since(if the demos are true to the actual performance) it's fast and simple.

The graphics in Ryse looked incredible. Wish I had seen NBA2k. Lots and lots of games. I don't think there was anything bad. They covered a lot of bases. Battlefield 4 and Forza and the weird new wacky games like the Sunset one from Insomniac. 499, that is not too bad considering the 360 launched 8 years ago for 399. I expect the PS4 to follow suit. All in all, they showed off so much and the only thing to do is keep cleaning up the DRM mess. I would say, you say fuck used games and go balls to the wall. With how games go on sale and drop in price so fast these days, why the need for used games? To save 5 bucks? To pay for other games? Well they already get pretty cheap.

Come on $499 is not an unexpected amount, it sound pretty reasonable to me. I'm totally getting one, and a PS4 as well. Nice to see lots of games in the conference instead of a bunch of irrelevant TV stuff.

Ditto. I'm far from rich, but for a conservative estimate of 8 years, hundreds of games and thousands of hours played - it doesn't seem too expensive. The PS3 cost about $700 at launch (adjusting for inflation) which is more equivalent to $800 in the UK.

I pre-ordered One just for Project Spark!

Actually, I did pre-order one, and Project Spark was by far the most interesting game that came out of the MS show for me, but I pre-ordered One just to have it lined up in case the launch lineup is more impressive than I think it will be, or to see how the prospect of flipping for extra cash to go towards a potential PS4 purchase might go.

It's really not that hard for Sony to knock it out of the park by only walking a few feet next to Microsoft's foot prints marked with violently triggered bear traps. All they have to do is just a lot of opposites regarding their system's policies, and adding the games they're going to have, to create more resonance around the Ps4. But I guess that sounds truly too good to be true.

Well, at least they didn't surrender us to Prism. As far as we know.

I was deep in the 360 ecosystem this go around. Had my PS3 for exclusives only. I'm incredibly disappointed that there wasn't something on stage that could swing me back to Microsoft as my "go to", despite their shitty DRM, but I also don't know what that thing could have been.

I guess now my launch choice relies on whether Sony breaches the "online checks to play games you paid $60 for or go fuck yourself" thing.

its too expensive for me (UK price of 668 Dollars) and none of the games are enough to make me break my tiny wee bank. I assume the PS4 is going to be along the same lines in price so boy howdy if they can show maybe 2 or 3 games that get me excited for the new gen then maybe, maybe, I can swing it but 668 Dollars in shiny UK Pounds is a lot for a brick when offline.

Without VAT (US price does not include sales tax)

(Using a standard EU rate of about 19%) Tax is about 95 euros. Console costs 405 euros, which is $534

(Using UK VAT rate 20%) Tax is about 85 pounds. Console costs 344 pounds, which is $536

So it's about $30 more expensive in Europe. Yeah that sucks, but it is not Microsofts fault that VAT is so high. With Los Angeles and California taxes (9%), the console costs $544.98 here

It was a decent showing games-wise, but the most interesting games to me were all multiplatform titles. And of the confirmed XBox One exclusives, most of the ones that were interesting to me (Quantum Break & Insomniac's game) were too far off to know what they would really be.

The only thing that looked cool near launch was Forza, but the big innovation they talked about just seems like the system that Real Racing 3 uses on mobile devices mixed with an improved version of the Drivatar learning AI that they have had since THE ORIGINAL FORZA on the ACTUAL Xbox 1!

Leaving aside the issues of XBL Gold paywalls and the always online DRM and the used games restrictions, there wasn't anything that was compelling enough to make me want an XBox One anytime soon.

And for that pricetag, it certainly won't be an impulse purchase. That would actually get me most of the way to a new computer next year that would be truly competitive with next-gen consoles.

It's funny watching so many people on the internet the last few weeks. After the Reveal Event most people kept saying "they better show games at E3" then E3 happens and tons of people are still like "terrible, Xbox 1 is doomed..."

They did exactly what most gamers wanted; showed games and didn't trip over themselves with numbers and BS that everyone usually hates. As a pure lover of gamers of all genres - this conference was excellent. I'm excited again - and $500 is exactly what I expected the system to cost and online connectivity isn't a concern (thankfully) for me. Stoked.

Hope Sony's presser is just as games focused - though I'd also like to know what the deal is with online costs, connections...etc.

Great E3 so far

@numbthumb: There's a difference between showing only multiplat games with two middling exclusives and showing actual content for your system that people use to buy yours instead of your competitors.

Lets say you were going to put together a living room PC with a $500.00 budget. Would it be comparable to the hardware capabilities that Microsoft is offering?

No way. $500 barely buys you the case, motherboard, PSU and CPU needed. Then you'll need a $400 Graphics card, $75 bucks worth of RAM, a BD-ROM drive and controller.

Lots of PC snobs will tell you the Xbox and PS4 are comparable to a Radeon 7850, but they forget that equal specs doesn't mean equal performance. The closed and fixed architecture of a console allows roughly double the performance out of a particular hardware setup. To run Wii games on a PC you need a rig with over double the power of the actual Wii, and the same goes for Xbox One and PS4.

To match these games being shown you'll need minimum $900-$1,000 in a PC if you're starting from scratch.

As the level of parity across Microsoft and Sony's consoles increases, the launch price comparison only becomes more important.

$449 puts Sony in an okay spot, but under $400 would be a huge advantage....IF they can afford to do that.

Parity across systems? The PS4 is going to be noticably more power than the Xbone.

The system architecture for Sony and Microsoft has never been more similar...has never been anywhere close to as similar as they are now.

I guess my friends and I are in the minority but most of us were pretty pleased with the games shown. I have faith in Remedy that despite not having much idea what the fuck that game is about yet, that it will be at least interesting, and from what the guy on stage was saying, something pretty new/different as far as narrative, in games. A couple of my friends and I are pretty big into Minecraft on 360 so them porting that over is pretty huge for us. It was the only 360 game I could see myself playing on the reg 1+ years from now (yeah I know it's on PC too). Crimson Dragon and D4 were pretty surprising exclusives to me, and being a pretty big legit fan of Deadly Premonition, I'm at least curious/excited to see what D4 ends up being. Project Spark looked like it could potentially be cool, although it seemed a bit weird they were doing a lot of that stuff with SmartGlass instead of Kinect.

Sunset Overdrive looked to be a cross between a competent version of Brink, and the version of FUSE we all wanted all along, so I'm pretty excited for that. Forza 5 remains awesome and if I do end up with a XBOne is definitely a day one purchase for me. The Halo trailer seemed cool but I honestly don't give a flying fuck about Halo or it's universe and continue to do so. Titanfall I expected to feel indifferent about as well, but I have to say the footage they showed at the MS and EA conferences has me interested. I fell off with COD after MW2, don't play Halo and have skipped the last couple BF games so this or Destiny might bring me back to shooters again finally.

And lastly, Dead Rising 3 looked a lot more like what I have been wanting from DR for a while, so if they get co-op right (i.e. my co-op partner doesn't drop every fucking time I save the game) and relax the time restrictions or just do away with them, I'm pretty much in on that one too, despite the ridiculously air strikes. Was hoping to see some new Squenix stuff or more Deep Down/Dragons Dogma stuff, but I'm guessing they'll be at Sony's show, exclusive or not.

My prediction:

Sony press conference will be the complete reverse of what Microsoft did. They will highlight numbers and the price, and go on about entertainment and movies.

I have 0 interest in the cloud bullshit, the DRM, the Kinect or the $499 price tag.

I will pick up a XBONE but it will be years down the road when i can get it for $200. The only 2 games that really interested me are 2 games that will more than likely come to PC so i am not sold. (D4 and Quantum). Dead Rising looked interesting but didn't really look like Dead Rising. I can see why 360 fans would be excited but it didn't tickle my fancy.

Also, that 2 game a month thing they are doing, although good in theory looks like a joke. Halo3/AC2? You can buy both of those games used for a few bucks at most.
