Microsoft to Pull Complete Reversal on Xbox One DRM Policies

Sources indicate Microsoft is going to move away from what's caused the company so much headache.

UPDATED: Microsoft has confirmed these policy changes are happening.

--

The tug-of-war between Microsoft and Sony just got more interesting. Multiple sources inform me Microsoft will announce what amounts to a complete reversal on its DRM policies for Xbox One today.

What does this mean?

  • No more always online requirement
  • The console no longer has to check in every 24 hours
  • All game discs will work on Xbox One as they do on Xbox 360
  • An Internet connection is only required when initially setting up the console
  • All downloaded games will function the same when online or offline
  • No additional restrictions on trading games or loaning discs
  • Region locks have been dropped

It is unclear what caused this huge change in policy right after E3, a week where Microsoft executives spent days explaining, justifying, and talking about its policies to the press. I suspect Microsoft’s official announcement will say something to the effect of “we've been closely listening to consumer feedback.”

Based on what I’m being told, that’s definitely true.

I've reached out to Microsoft for comment.

Microsoft has taken an enormous amount of heat regarding DRM policies with its new console. Sony became consumer heroes at E3, announcing PlayStation 4 would not treat used games differently, and the status quo would reign. The company released this video, twisting the knife:

Of course, Xbox One is still $499 and PlayStation 4 is still $399. But today moves the needle.

Love that they felt the pressure enough to cave to the consumer's demands. Still going PS4 at launch, but this may mean I can actually own an Xbox One sometime down the road if the "no region locking" thing is for real.

Insane. Patrick scoops probably the largest scoop yet and then he's off to Chicago. Congrats Sir! :)

@marokai said:

Massive expressions of consumer outrage made this possible. When someone tells you that petitions and twitter campaigns don't work, remind them of this day. Consumer action did this. Pretty fucking incredible.

Preach, Never underestimate internet activism.

Ok, my question is: What does this do to games that counted on using "The Cloud" for processing data and what not? I think I remember from one of the recent podcasts that TitanFall was going to use the cloud for bot AI, and there is that Driveatar whosawhatsit with Forza. How does this drastic change affect those games?

Edited by Godlyawesomeguy

Man, Klepek making some noise and then heading off to Chicago. Crazy.

And.....cool, I guess? I would prefer Microsoft to admit their mistake and change than to stubbornly hold onto the DRM stuff. Is it confirmed that publishers won't have the option to institute DRM if they choose to do so?

@hooray4larz: They're a shit company with shit policies. There's a way to run a business without being entirely anti-consumer. You think I don't know that the sole purpose of a business is to make money? Give me a break.

Great to know that you would run this garbage into the ground, too. Go ahead and pat them on the back.

2013 the year of Microsoft U-Turns

First there was Windows 8.1 - Bring back Start
Now we have the Sony f**ked us at E3 reversal

It's funny how many are ready to jump back into bed with the company that was trying to bend you over. Sony came in like Bruce Willis with a samurai sword and sliced MS open while they were behind you ready to insert.

Stolen from Gaf!

Good move by MS but the damage has been done

Xbox 180!

Now they should call it the Xbox 180.

Hahaha, so true.

Can we start the countdown til Don Mattrick gets thrown off the roof of Xbox HQ now?

I'm still digging on the PS4 games-wise... HOHOKUM OR BUST SON!

Edited by MrMazz

This was a good victory but I haven't seen anything about them removing Netflix, Hulu+, and other such featurs from the Xbox Gold pay wall. Without these featurs Microsoft could really have that one box future they want and honestly Xbox One looks like a SWEET piece of kit.

Now if they annouce a subsidized model for $199 with say a two year sub to Xbox Live that'd make things REALLY interesting.

Edited by WickedFather

I'm saddened by this. I wanted the XBone to die horribly and now some people will actually buy that box of crap.

Its over, sony is finished xD

I'd be really sad if that were the case. Both are companies driven by profit but Sony tried to earn theirs through giving the customer what they want. Microsoft decided they had everyone held hostage and would hold them to ransom. Sony deserve to give Microsoft a bloody nose here because if MS turns it around and 'wins' the generation there's every chance there won't be any competition next time (if consoles even exist by that point) and you can bet with a true monopoly MS will bring all this back.

I'll be voting with my wallet. Some MS exclusives look really cool but I feel like there's a point of principle to be made here. I'm not just a sheep who'll hand them my money safe in the knowledge that they were willing to screw me over until forced not to by bad press.

Too bad they didn't announce this at E3 when the whole world was watching.

Now make a SKU without Kinect for $100 cheaper...

Oh, and let indies self-publish.

Holy shit, I was fully expecting and prepared for MS to just go, "Whatever, they'll accept it with time, fuck them."

Did GB/Patrick break this story?

Wow, so this is Microsoft saying "Yeah, we were trying to fuck you guys real hard before, but now look how nice we are! Aren't we the coolest?!"

Fuck that.

I am very happy that Microsoft did this - it is great for the customers, and it shows that our opinions matter.

With that being said, there is no way in hell I'm getting one at launch. I'm going to wait a few years to see what they do, because I currently see Microsoft like a cheating girlfriend - they may seem like things are cool now, but that initial motive speaks stronger than anything else. They tried forcing these crazy policies down our throats, and I'm not that quick to forgive - I don't trust that these policies won't come back in some way down the line.

Tricky Scoops does it again!

I'm stunned by this complete 180 but i don't know how they now deal with questions of the future where everyone asks how can we trust you when you were so definite as to how crucial this stuff was and then magically just "hey guys, it's all gone now."

So Microsoft knows your home sick and still makes you go out and play hooky with them. They takes your father's classic Ferrari and treats it like shit. They never listens to what you have to say. They winds up destroying your Dad's Ferrari and tells you to own up to it and use it as a growing experience and you guys are just going look Microsoft in the eye and tell them they are still cool?

DON'T BE CAMERON!

Edited by BRich

God. Damn. It. This sucks a big one for people with internet connections and friends to share games with digitally.

I just wonder how bad their projections had to be for this to happen. It had to be straight up DIRE. Also if this is what we can expect from Patrick with more time on his hands, fucking more power to him! Amazing work as always Patrick.

I feel like I was the only person moving away from Microsoft for reasons other than the crappy DRM. My main problem is they seem to only care about Americans, and I'm tired of paying for apps I can't use, TV functionality I won't be able to use, and for a Kinect I won't, and for the most part, can't use. The only series I currently care about that's exclusive to the Xbox is Forza, aside from that they've got nothing that interests me. This is a step in the right direction, but not nearly enough to sway me. The damage with this DRM stuff is already mostly done for me, too. It just makes Microsoft feel really out of touch to me, even if they have gone back now to change it.

On one hand, thank fuck for that. In a few years maybe I will get one of these, if they sell one without the stupid always-on camera and actually get interesting games for me, which I don't ever see happening right now, but I could be wrong. On the other, I don't know if I can trust the company who even tried to implement these sorts of policies. In the least, now assholes like Cliffy B have no leg to stand on for supporting that mess. This is only good for consumers, though some may say it's bad for gamers "in the long run." Albeit, some who are very naive.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat? Holy shit, the stunners coming out of this year's fucking E3 week. Microsoft's PR admitted they were wrong, that's fucking incredible.

A change like this is good for almost everyone, of course, but I think I'll still probably avoid the X1 for a while. Reversing a shitty policy is good, but it only goes so far to make up for trying to be shitty out of the gate.

Edited by FuriousJodo

What's interesting to me is the people who are trying to spin this like it's a bad thing. Big corporations changing their policies to align with what users want is ONLY a good thing.

Still $100 more expensive, still less powerful, still requires Kinect, still has terrible indie policies. Still not buying one.
