Mirror's Edge Goes Behind Your Back

A quick file alteration gets you the third-person camera you always wanted in Mirror's Edge, but it's not quite a valid way to play the entire game.

Since today seems to be all about bringing you busted-up videos of games, take a look at the PC version of Mirror's Edge. If you get in there and edit some ini files, you can rig up a third-person, behind-the-back camera. Check it:

As you'll quickly notice, the animation on Faith is kind of half-finished. Also, apparently you can't actually look up or down when you're playing from this view. Still, even with all the unfinished stuff, the view looks pretty good to me.

If you want to give this a shot yourself, here's how to do it, as seen on the forums at On-Mirror's-Edge:

Go to "Documents\EA Games\Mirror's Edge\TdGame\Config\" open the file "TDInput" with notepad. Add this line to the "bindings" list:

Bindings=(Name="F4",Command="FreeFlightCamera",Control=False,Shift=False,Alt=False)

then press F4 a few times!

That opening sequence was just atrocious, and makes you appreciate how great it was in first-person.

As AndrewB said:

" it isn't entirely that the animation is half-done, but rather done in a way that makes it look good and make sense from a first person perspective only."

I guess the best thing to do with that perspective is to take screenshots. You can't see bad animation on screenshots :D

in this video as Faith runs around like a paraplegic would in a dream, i imagine how it would be with awesome animations for Faith and i agree with most of you fucks that the game in 3rd person would be so generic.
in the regular game her head is like on her chest in first person view. no matter where you look you cant see her shoulders. when you look down, her milk tanks are like touching her nose. weird. they'll fix that in Mirror's Edge 2: Keep the Faith. and they'll make it open world. you'll see.

That looks like total crap. I wouldn't even touch it with a ten foot pole if it was like that.

That's sweet.  I like that the developers left this mode, that was probably used for debugging purposes, in there and easy to access.  If they had finished Faith's animations and made this view an option, at least for jumping puzzles, I think this game would have benefited.

While looking forwards and running, how often do you see your own arms and legs fly in to view?  Not very often, unless you're running like a retard. :P

It's not really "easy to access". You have to edit a configuration file to add a binding for an obscure command.

I would buy Mirror's Edge if they:

1) Did absolutely nothing with Faith's upper body. In fact I want less animation.
2) Guaranteed you had to play the game like this. In fact, get rid of first person all together config files or not.
3) Gave me four more config files to edit
4) Gave Faith a funnier walk
5) More NPCs inspired by the delightful international pop music star Pink

If only...

I dont know what the hell Jeff is talking about.  Those animations look like finished EA animations to me.

Hmmm....I see why third person wasn't an option when it released. That looks pretty crappy but at least it is funny to watch.  When she got pushed off the roof it was like her diving backwards.

It makes me feel like they originally planned to make a Prince of Persia style game, and their animator's suck so to negate that they put the camera permanently in first person. I also see a EA Executive yelling in the back "FROM A 3/10 TO A 6/10 INSTANTLY! TOUCHDOWN!!!!!!!!"

I have a weird ass mind

The animations aren’t that good, I agree, but that’s hardly surprising seeing as the game was never intended to be third person, at least as far as I’m aware. There was no reason for the developers to pay much attention to something that wasn’t likely to be seen by most of the community so poor animations is kind of a given. I suspect that the only reason that it’s there at all is for testing purposes so in that respect it’s perfectly reasonably. If it helped to fix bugs and the like then graphical quality wouldn’t have been a prime concern.

They made it first person, so play it the way it's suppose to be played or don't at all.  Unless you just wanna fuck around of course.

That's kind of cool, but Mirror's Edge is a lot better as a FPP...
