Monday Night Combat Just Got Super-er

Uber Entertainment is bringing Monday Night Combat to the PC as a free-to-play title.

If you were one of the many players that helped make Monday Night Combat a surprise hit upon its release on Xbox Live Arcade last year, you may find yourself interested in developer Uber Entertainment's latest project: Super Monday Night Combat for the PC.

More championship belts in everything, please.
More championship belts in everything, please.

The primary difference in this iteration of Monday Night Combat is that it's a free-to-play title. Anyone who downloads it will be able to play the breadth of the game for precisely zero dollars. Like other FTP titles, Uber plans to make its revenue off microtransactions for items and specific content updates.

There will be changes to the gameplay, as well. The team-based shooter will move from a six-on-six model to five-on-five, and include an all-new leveling system, designed to improve players beyond the marginal scope of the skill upgrades found in the Xbox 360 version. New environments, characters, and other upgrades will also be included.

There is a full, lengthy preview of Super Monday Night Combat up over at Kotaku, if you're into that sort of thing. Considering the success of other FTP titles like League of Legends and the recently transitioned Team Fortress 2, this seems like a wise, competitive move from Uber. What say you, Monday Night Combat fans? Will you check out this updated version on your PC? Or are you perfectly happy with the XBLA version?

I thought of that also. I'd like to know if Uber is going to offer PC players who bought MNC already anything in SMNC. Probably not, but one can hope right?

They've already said on their forums that players who bought the original will have access to some exclusive items.

Well okay! I was always sort of interested in MNC, so I suppose this will give me an excuse to try it.

Another game that I buy and instantly goes F2P! Yes! I'm done buying multiplayer games. I'll just wait for them to become free to play in the future.

I'm happy with the current PC version, thank you very much.

But I suppose I'll take a look at this. It makes me worried for some reason, though.

That's the joke. It's a rip on the SNES way of branding "new and improved" versions of games. It's happening a lot more now that young developers making downloadable games have a lot of nostalgia from growing up with that platform.

After watching the trailer on kotaku it seems they are trying to market this as less of an arcade-like 3rd person shooter with light upgrade and tower defense elements, which is how I looked at the first one, and more of a competitive to be taken serious MOBA, literally calling itself DOTA like and referring to the characters as 'pros' instead of classes. heck the map featured in the trailer even looks like it was stripped out of DOTA. Did anyone get the vibe of a well crafted, competition level MOBA from the first one?

I can't say I'm not a little let down that the 360 isn't getting this.
I enjoyed MNC but eventually stopped playing due to lack of variety and balance issues.
I was quite looking forward to a sequel.
Another day, another game I suppose.

Yeah I read some of that in the Kotaku article as well. Thankfully Uber is still awesome and redeems PC gaming once again :D

The PC version of MNC has had quite a few balance changes, feature additions, and new content including one map.

It costs money to release content on XBL after the first patch, and Microsoft is the publisher, so blame Microsoft for not allowing Uber Ent to support MNC 360.

Why does it always have to be "Blame these guys" around here?
One could just as easily blame Uber for releasing a game on a platform that they're too cheap to support - if one were so inclined.

Anyways, I wasn't really looking to blame anyone for anything.

@ProfessorEss:
Microsoft should be blamed because they are the publisher and it is their job to fund development of said games updates. Microsoft is also the platform holder that charges publishers/developers money to update their games.

You expect a tiny indie developer to pay for bandwidth costs that their publisher/platform holder charges them?

The PC version on the other hand is updated because certification is non-existent and its cheap to push updates on Steam.

Well, it would be nice if developers prepared for the finances required to support their titles. Wouldn't it?

Anyways, here's to Uber, I hope they keep going strong because they seem like a good team.
Maybe they'll come back to consoles, or maybe I'll find myself with a decent gaming PC someday in the future.

This game sold a lot on the PC from what I have read but no one really plays it, which is odd.  Usually PC games have smaller but longer lasting communities, in this case it went the opposite direction.  Maybe this version will do better.

Well,  since the PC version is already superior to the XBLA version now,  I can't wait for this to come out.

Hopefully in the next console generation Microsoft won't be so stingy about content updates and the rules surrounding them.

Owning the full version of MNC, it would be nice if they gave MNC PC players something extra (like in game cash) since we already paid for what seems to be the same product, slightly altered.

THOSE FINANCES SHOULDN'T BE REQUIRED, THAT IS HIS ARGUMENT

Also you don't need a gaming PC to play MNC... A decent PC these days is cheaper than a current console and you don't have to pay a subscription fee to play online.

The original sold better on 360 so they're gonna need all the luck going up against Team Fortress 2's free-2-play community. They should've just made a new IP... please tell me any profitable free-2-play LAUNCH games.
