Month-Long PSN Exclusives Promotion Starts Tomorrow

Eufloria, Rochard and a slew of hard-to-find PS2 games hitting the store.

Rochard involves a bit of platforming, but it's mostly about manipulating objects with gravity.
Rochard involves a bit of platforming, but it's mostly about manipulating objects with gravity.

Xbox Live Arcade is hardly a perfect ecosystem, but the company's made its annual summer promotion one of the places to be for developers. It doesn't ensure success--but it helps.

Sony hasn't committed to a similar push for PlayStation Network releases, despite having its own exhaustive slate of exclusive content. Sony's looking to turn that around with "Only on PlayStation Network."

The promotion kicks off October 4, starting with the atmospheric Eufloria and physics-based platformer Rochard, which Brad and I already took a (quick) look at. "Only on PlayStation Network" continues through the rest of October, sometimes with one new release, other times with two.

Some long requested classics are going digital this month, too. God Hand, GrimGrimoire, Maximo: Ghosts to Glory, Odin Sphere and Ring of Red will all be available starting tomorrow.

As a bonus, anyone with a PlayStation Plus account receives 20% off each game, and if you spend $60 on PSN (games, movies, music, whatever), Sony will give you $10 to also spend on PSN.

The full list of games coming this month (sans Rochard, which is already out) is as follows:

It's worth noting inFamous 2: Festival of Blood doesn't actually require you to own inFamous 2, a welcomed change of pace.

Very excited that the festival of blood doesn't require Infamous 2 since I traded that in. I wonder if they will also give us access to the online portion (where people create missions, it has a acronym, but I forget what it was).

How crazy would it be if Sony put up the larger portion of the PS2 library on PSN? That would be kind of awesome.

I've heard good things about God Hand, and after playing Muramasa: The Demon Blade, I've been interested in Odin Sphere and Grim Grimoire. This is great news for me.

Ugh, Rochard seems tedious. It's the first demo I ever turned off out of pure boredom. There are no heavyhitters but it's not the worst lineup I guess.

Festival of Blood sounds interesting since I don't have inFamous 2.
And Okabu too, it looks so cute.

I've always been interested in Odin Spehere and God Hand. I'm defiantly picking those up along with Eufloria and a couple other exclusives. I'll spend $60 no problem.

Can you buy PS2 games on the PSN store, like you can with some Xbox games on the 360 already?

Myarm myarm myarm myarm I summon up a download of the GOD HAND!

Seriously pumped about this, even though according to the PSN blog there won't be any Trophy support or HD-ifying of the PS2 games.

God Hand's ending credit sequence is one of my favorite things. Also it got me to look into and enjoy surf rock. Great game.

Odin Sphere had far to many endings but was definitely worth playing.

Nice little promo - it seemed like these games were going to get hung out to dry after their recent "Playstation Play" promotion

Speaking of which - I wonder if this sale will inspire the same amount of insane blind gamer rage that the Play promo did..

Also, you'd think Payday would be a part of this. But I guess that was in the previous promo

So this is how Sony introduces PS2 games on PSN? Without any sort of big announcement? Simply: "Hey, PSN-exclusive games are hitting the store. Also: PS2 games."

Hell yes! I already have a copy of God Hand somewhere, but I'll buy it again just to always have it on my hard drive.

God power keeps my pimp hand strong. Other than that, RocketBirds seems like the only must-buy for me.

All 4 of those PS2 games are awesome. While I still own my original copies I will gladly rebuy them so I can play them discless on my PS3 slim in the living room (launch 60GB in the bedroom).

I now eagerly anticipate people picking up God Hand on a whim and then complaining about the difficulty.

Still, this PS2 stuff feels out of nowhere, I'm not even sure which harder to find PS2 games I'd want to see.

DQVIII needs to be ported and re-translated to either the Vita or the 3DS. Since these PS2 games are just straight up emulations, there's no point of buying them if you already own them.

The lead is buried in this article, no? The big story here is that PS2 games are being made available on PSN not that there's some promotion.

Unless you recently hooked up your PS2 to play God Hand and discovered that it will no longer read disks.

Cool. Maximo Ghosts to Glory is one of my favorite PS2 games, though kind of ugly and hard in the old schoolest of ways. I really prefer VS Army of Zin at this point but since I don't have a copy of Ghosts I might pick it up sometime.

Who knows, I might check out God Hand and Odin Sphere on a whim to sometime in the future too.

I also played the Rochard demo and that was pretty fun.

I guess they still don't want to completely shoot PS2 sales in the foot? I honestly don't even know what the sales numbers are like for that system anymore, but perhaps they are still high enough for them to want people to own both? I'm super happy I just ordered a new 500gb hard drive for my 80gb MGS PS3 yesterday.

So, they've started releasing the least technological ps2 games on the psn first. Emulation does take some serious power. I can play crysis fine. Emulate a ps2 game? Not all of them. I just don't understand why sony would take the emotion chip out of the ps3 in the first place. Like they're loosing any more money. Guess just to sell the same games on psn, and make certain people happy.

The Onimusha series should be added next, also the mega man X collection would be nice as well. I hope Sony makes this a regular thing. On another note does anyone think this has any thing to do with the October 5 announcement.

@Christoffer: So, I have a launch 60GB PS3. I can't say if I'm crazy or not, but I've played Odin Sphere both on it and on my regular PS2, in disc form. There is a chance that the framerate issues are random, but when I fought one of the bosses on my PS2, framerate issues abound. When I played the same boss on my PS3, no issues at all.

I've had another friend confirm the same thing with Odin Sphere for me, but neither of us can remember if they saw framerate jankiness anywhere while playing on the PS3, or if it was just smoother all along while being emulated on it.
