More Content For Ocarina of Time 3D: Boss Challenge Mode

Because you need another reason to play this industry-definer all over again.

No Caption Provided
While some of us (read: me) patiently wait for a 3D version of The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, otherwise known as the very best of the 3D Zelda games, I've been following Nintendo's tweaks to the upcoming The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D. The newest addition, Boss Challenge Mode, comes courtesy of a quiet announcement from Nintendo of Europe.

There aren't many surprises to Boss Challenge Mode, though. What you're reading is, basically, what you get. Outside of the main adventure, players can tackle Ocarina of Time 3D's many monstrous bosses, either in one-off varieties or marathon back-to-back challenges.

No new bosses, apparently.

Ocarina of Time 3D also comes with the New Game Plus-like Master Quest mode, which changes the location of enemies and items—and flips the entire world around. As if 3D wasn't confusing enough...

Look for Link's first sans-glasses 3D adventure on June 19th.

My Majora's Mask comment did not go over well, but I must stand tall. Stay together, fellow Majorians.

Klepek, I liked you before you came to Whiskey Media, but there is no way that Majora's Mask is the best Zelda.

Just give me a quest log, Nintendo. That's all I'm asking.

I, on the other hand, wholeheartedly agree with you Patrick; Majora's Mask is excellent.

@blaakmawf: I didn't HATE Majora's Mask, it just isn't the best Zelda game by a long shot.

Or a hookshot. Zing!

Considering bosses are probably my least favorite part of Zelda games, I can't say I'm to excited about this.

I don't know, It's a toughie for me between Majora's Mask and Wind Waker.

But if we're including 2D ones then LTTP wins by a mile.

Zelda comment sparks discussion. Sweet.

I'd agree, to be honest. My brother and I used to spend hours playing Zelda together, and it's always Majora's Mask that we cite as the best.

I've gone into it a lot before, so I won't here, but: that atmosphere, man. Incredible.

Master quest is pretty nice when you've completed the game to many times :) 3D though, I don't know if it's worth it.. Boss mode might be nice.. once =/

EDIT: Majoras is awesome!

From this point onward you are my favorite Whiskey Media employee.

EDIT

Major's Mask, best Zelda, regardless of 3D? Maybe.
(I have not played the GBA ones. And I'm not saying LTTP ain't cool.)

Let me just restate the above.

Yeah I think the main idea of Majora's Mask is great, it's just so fucking hard to play. Like Dead Rising.

I'm a bit split on whether or not to play this game in Master Quest mode. On the one hand it'd make the game feel more like something new, on the other knowing all the solutions to the puzzles helps the feeling of familiarity and nostalgia which might lead to me enjoying it more.

Choices.

Anyhow Majora's Mask is awesome, though mostly because of how dark it is.

Its a real bummer nobody ever did anything more with the idea of "impending doom at zero hour+ time travel" after MM. You'd think it'd be perfect for the "consequences" gimmick at the games have now.

I strongly disagree. I am not a very nostalgic type of guy(I consider the PS2/XBOX/GC generation be leagues ahead of anything before it) and I don't even have that large a history with the franchise, but I consider the 3D Zelda games to be some of the most well designed and paced games in the history of this medium.

.....well..... aside from Twilight Princess, of course.

Well, I've observed that the Triforce-gathering sequence in Wind Waker is a huge turn-off to many people who played the game to that point, myself included. As for OoT, I'm going through it again with a specific "challenge why this game works this way" mentality right now, and most of the game is just rather bland. I haven't played MM in a long time, and I quit Twilight Princess a few months after release when a hard lock would've forced me to collect all the lightning bugs for the third dungeon AGAIN (I was on the last one, but I accidentally collected it at the same time as a Poe Soul and a red rupee and it couldn't handle that.)

That said, I think my favorite from a dungeon-design perspective is probably Twilight Princess (my brother soldiered forward, and there was some cool stuff!) and my favorite overall is definitely still Majora's Mask. I think Wind Waker is a really cool game that is marred by how little there really is to see/do while out in the ocean, and Ocarina of Time...well, let's just say I could record probably an hour and a half of material on my issues with OoT.

The great sea in the WW is filled with stuff to do. There are 60+ island and all of them contain something for you to do-- whether it be a cave/mindungeon to explore or a town to visit. There were tons of collectables(which were actually fun to do for once, like taking pictures)  Maybe you didn't find the side-stuff in WW super compelling to do, but from a quantity perspective, it is definitely more than TP and OOT and hell, most games.

I thought the dungeon design in TP was probably the poorest of the series. It was 100% a trek through an(almost) entirely straight line, requiring no thought from me at all. You never had to backtrack or influence different parts of a level to solve a puzzle at all.Twilight Princess also had incredibly annoying elements to it like bug-collecting in the first three dungeons, an intro that would make a  modern Persona game blush and an overworld that honestly had much less to do in it than pretty much any other Zelda game.  And it was almost entirely sidequest free. The only sidequests were annoying collect-a-thons.

.well, let's just say I could record probably an hour and a half of material on my issues with OoT.

I'd be interested in reading/hearing about 'em.

Devil Survivor did the bolded part, at least. And its unfortunate enough that very little games use "impending doom at zero hour" by itself. Games love them some post-apocalyptic settings, but having the player play through a doom's day scenario(by which I mean society collapsing on to itself as the final day approaches) is incredibly rare.
