More Evidence PSPgo On Its Way Out

Sony updates their Japanese website with a pretty clear fate for PSPgo.

There was loose but compelling evidence Sony has quietly started winding down PSPgo yesterday, starting with the very basic of steps: ending production. Neither Sony in Japan nor America had made public comments about the story, but Andriasang has since noticed Japanese audio visual website Phileweb heard from Sony that PSPgo production is over. Further sales will come from existing stock.

Sony's official website makes the future of PSPgo pretty clear, with hardware listings straight up saying (in the red Kanji text over there in the corner--we double-checked) PSPgo shipments and sales have stopped.

I've contacted Sony Computer Entertainment America regarding a similar status for PSPgo in North America (which is likely), but the company has yet to respond. That itself, however, says something.

You can still purchase PSPgo from various places online, including Sony's North American store, but the time is ticking, folks. Patrick Klepek on Google+

The PSPgo?  Hmmm mighty interesting.

Klepek articles coming thick and fast....I like :)

I'm sure they'll fly out the door, what with the NGP on its way.

Hate to see you go, but I love to watch you leave!

It's time to take the PSP out back and put it down for good.

Such an ill-conceived advice. Digital content is rad, but that thing was a nightmare.

Wait, wasn't this confirmed on Gamasutra (via a statement to Japanese site AV Watch)?

Are PSP 3000's still in production, or did that end a while ago? I know they were running concurrently with the Go for a while, but I don't know if it's still going. It would be weird if Sony are completely abandoning the PSP this far away from the NGP release. They have got to still be selling one model of the PSP, surely?

There was a cheapassgamer thread about some store clearing these out. I think it was Costco, but I may be wrong. Some locations had them as low as ~$55. Bye bye, PSPgo.

Edited by PenguinDust

It's only the Go that's leaving.  The 3000 will still be around for a while since it's a more versatile machine and they're still making sales over in Japan thanks to Monster Hunter and Final Fantasy reissues.

@MattyFTM:  Joystiq said this of the 3000 today:

According to the site [Playstation.com], the only PSPs currently in production are PSP-3000s in black, white, silver, pink, blue, and red.

God damnit. You win.

I'd say I feel sorry for anyone that bought one, but they should have known better.

You totally should have shoe-horned that pun into this article, Patrick.

think all this was put in motion all due to the Earthquake/Tsunami that went down recently causing alot of places to halt production on many different products due to some companies not able to produce anything right now

The problem with it was the PSP store, it sucked. They need sales and events like steam otherwise people aren't compelled to buy anything.

No time for mourning.  Spill the beans on NGP!

Posted by Nobo_Fett

It wasn't meant to be. :/

Posted by Winternet

Gotta get those Gos.

Wait, what am i saying?
Posted by m0rdr3d
@zudthespud:
Amen to that, man.  I don't wanna get stung on a pricey portable game, but I take the plunge on Steam sales often.

KLEPEK! I love you! So much!

Also yeah psp whatever, portable gaming sucks etc.

might pick one up for emulators.

How does it handle, form factor wise?

No matter how bad it sold, no one can deny it is a pretty sexy piece of hardware.

I bought a PSP go last month from Sony's online store. I did this simply as a collector. The bonus was that I guess they have an overstock of them and they sent me the one with LBP, Ratchet, and SOCOM included with it. So I felt way less guilty about buying it.

That fact that Sony failed to come up with a UMD-to-digital-download path for games already owned killed the Go out of the gate.
Posted by phish09

Yep.  Retailers are about to start clearing them out big time.  As of this Thursday, Best Buy (Canada), is going to be selling PSP Go's for $129.99 plus tax.

I said, from the moment I saw this announced at E3 that this is just not going to fly.  Who wants to pay more money for a smaller screen, cramped controls and a system of buying games in which you can NOT under any circumstances resell those games?  They should have just released the GO at $129 originally and maybe they would have had success, but it certainly should not have been more expensive than the PSP 3000.  Worst strategy ever.

@chickdigger802:  You can't get emulators on a PSPgo. Sorry.
Posted by TadThuggish

Never had a PSP.  Since everything is going digital anyway, I may pick one up when/if the price significantly drops.

Yes you can. Google Half-Boot Loader.  I just bought a Go a couple of weeks ago (£45 including the Euro 10 games offer) - updated it to the latest firmware and threw on HBL. Hey presto I'm running SNES stuff alongside GBA and Megadrive/Genesis stuff. Oh, there's a neat version of Cave Story for HBL too.

As for form factor, it's a really nice device. Doesn't have the screen issues of the 3000 and is much nicer to hold than any previous PSP I've tried

I thought this thing died more than a year ago.

Posted by FritzDude

Good riddance.

Posted by Grilledcheez

I think it truly died when it was announced.

Posted by shenstra

I totally called this two weeks ago. The PSP Slim got a price cut in Europe and on the same day several major Dutch retailers (including our equivalent of Amazon) stopped offering PSP Gos.

Posted by MeatSim

It was doomed to fail from the beginning.

Posted by OllyOxenFree

Dunno if I should buy one and keep it sealed for collector's sake.

Posted by FCKSNAP
@Rhythm: Last time I looked at it, it only ran ISO's, if that changed, well I guess they have a reason to discontinue it.
Posted by xXJonoXx

Almost bought one from Sams Club for $65

Posted by Delusibeta

Ultimately, it was a project that was sunk by the fact that it launched at a higher price than the PSP-3000 and offered no benefit over it. Had there been some great PSPgo exclusive games, then it might have gained some traction, but alas it was not to be.

Posted by FoxMulder

Isnt the PSP2 evidence that the PSP Go is on its way out?

Posted by Droop

"... red Kanji ..."

GET BENT!

Now this is more like it, even tried to contact the company to get a response at least.  Nice job.

PSP is dead. They should show that Butler guy get rid of the black kid.

it makes me feel so superior to have a post count higher then a staff members

Posted by MisterMouse

well this will only lead to the NGP which is hopefully good stuff for Sony.
