The rumor has been floating around for awhile now, with TRMK also digging up a similar listing in a US-focused distributor database earlier this month. Most of the speculation and unofficial info seems to peg the package as a collection containing remakes of Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat II, and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3.
Much like the rest of the project, it's not known how, exactly, one would make these 2D games over in high-resolution. Much of the original footage shot for those first three games isn't in a suitable quality for anything more than some basic upscaling. Going back to TRMKÂ yet again, the site is also reporting that the footage is being reshot with new actors. The whole idea sounds crazy in a way I can totally get behind. In fact, if they need someone to play Stryker, I think I've got the "out-of-shape cop" look down to a science. Just putting that out there. I'll send my headshot over, cool?
Also of interest is the fact that all of these retailer and distributor leaks have only listed the PlayStation 3, never the Xbox 360. This could point to some sort of exclusive deal... maybe since Sony's so keen on getting 3D support into the proper Mortal Kombat sequel due out next year, it's also throwing some additional oomph (and by "oomph" I suppose I mean "dollars") in Warner's direction for some exclusive arcade classics?
Either way, the retailer listings and specific information about this rumored project have picked up enough that it certainly sounds legit. And GameStop isn't exactly in the business of inventing products to include in its database. From a business perspective, maybe this makes great sense as a way to get people re-excited about the next MK by showing them how it all began?
But if this game's really going to come together and ship in mid-November, it's a little surprising that it hasn't been announced yet. That's really the only part that bothers me about this whole thing. Either some secret team has been toiling away on getting emulated arcade code to play nice with new graphics for quite some time, or this thing's going to be some sort of rush-job. Or, heck, maybe it doesn't actually exist, right?Â
