Mortal Kombat To Hit In April, Pre-Order Stuff Announced

You'll be able to pick from two different special editions and, if you reserve your game, you'll get laced with some pre-order exclusive DLC.

Warner Bros has announced a release month for the upcoming Mortal Kombat, pegging the fighting game down as an April 2011 release, as opposed to the seasonal "Spring" listing it had before. But super eager fans can venture outside to major retailers as early as this afternoon in order to procure a pre-order ticket for one of two different special edition bundles, as well as retailer-tied character and fatality DLC.

The first of these special edition bundles is the "Kollector's Edition," which features Sub-Zero and Scorpion figurines, an art book, an "exclusive" classic Mortal Kombat costume skin, and themed avatar costumes. The other edition is the "Tournament Edition," which features a limited-release "portable fight stick" and another classic Mortal Kombat costume skin, as well as themed avatar costumes.

Pre-ordering either of these special editions, or even the vanilla edition of the pseudo-reboot, will get you additional "exclusive access" to DLC at Amazon, GameStop or Best Buy. I've created a little list here for your reading pleasure:

== TEASER == GameStop
  • "Klassic" Scorpion Playable Character Skin
  • Original Scorpion Fatality

Best Buy
  • "Klassic" Sub-Zero Playable Character Skin
  • Original Sub-Zero Fatality

Amazon
  • "Klassic" Reptile Playable Character Skin
  • Original Reptile Fatality

The DLC fatalities appear in addition to the two character-specific fatalities that each character will have by default. Amazon is the first of these retailers to release an image of this pre-order DLC. Check out Reptile's classic look:

In other Mortal Kombat news, God of War's Kratos was confirmed as a PS3-exclusive character at the Spike VGAs. According to WBIE, he'll have his own move set, fatality, and fighting arena. NetherRealm's Ed Boon spoke briefly about Kratos' inclusion in a recent press release. "We could not be more excited to have Kratos in the new Mortal Kombat, since we've always felt he would fit perfectly into our universe and can't wait for Mortal Kombat and God of War fans to play this game," he said.

One might say this game is second to none.

This is BS.

Everyone's gonna go for the GameStop one.

Bleh. This is a bad idea.

This is terrible.

I am super excited for this game but man I hate it when games do this.  So you essentially have to buy it 3 times from 3 places to get all of the content [yeah I know by "all the content" I am talking a lot of cosmetic stuff, but still]? Nothing against this game which I am super excited for [as this is probably just some grr markerters grrr or something] but this sort of stuff is the apsolute worst ever.  I can almost stand pre order bonuses [but I still dislike them a lot], but this is the worst of the worst of how those pre order bonuses can go.

and with that I wont be buying MK... good job whatever the fuck you call midway now

Posted by Dimsey

I don't like this.
I'll like the game, I'm sure. But the way they're handling this pre-order bonus stuff isn't great.

Not liking this retailer-specific DLC at all. Who the hell thought that would be a good idea?

I HIGHLY DISLIKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by yyZiggurat

Oh that's not so bad.

Not a fan of this game but if I was I would be soooooo pissed off. This is a horrible joke. Maybe something like costumes but aren't fatalities something integral to this game. I hate this marketing shite. What do they think that people are going to be stupid enough to buy 3 copies of the game........

"Portable Fight Stick"?  I demand pictures!  Parker, get on that!

Or just wait for it to go up as cheap DLC less than a month later, like they did for Dead Rising 2.

Best buy then.

Ugh I hate pre-ordering from Best buy.

This sucks big time.  I am a huge fan of MK and both Sub-Zero and Scorpion.  They are being really annoying with this retailer specific DLC crap.

I would be willing to stomach it if I could buy some kind of special edition that came with all of the skins and DLC, but there is never such an edition.  Hopefully all of this is added for free after the game's release to all versions because not having access to a fatality because I shopped somewhere else is a HUGE problem.

This is retarded.

Posted by Swaboo

Yeah, it kinda sucks but fatalities don't affect gameplay so it's pretty cool as far as pre-orderDLC goes.

Preposterous! Amazon is the way I'm going if I preorder it at all.
Posted by FritzDude

Wow. Fatality as a pre-order bonus. Well, i wont pre-order then.

Posted by Marino

Does the Tournament Edition include the Kollector's Edition stuff as well?

I'll go with a Best Buy Tournament Edition pre-order.  Does anyone know if the Xbox arcade sticks can work with a PC?

Since I have no favorite character I'll probably just grab it from Amazon anyway.

Agreed.

Preorder fatalities? Really lame. Do I really have to go to Best Buy? I hate going to Best Buy.

Edited by Double0hFor

i guess Kratos will fit in perfectly just like the DC characters or the Star Wars characters in Soul Caliber.......

Posted by IBurningStar

I want all 3 of those but I don't want to reserve a copy at 3 different places. So my answer is this: fuck it, I'm not getting any of them. Why? Because fuck you for doing this.

Posted by stinky

this will all become free DLC a month or so after launch i'm betting.

that fightstick looks fantastic.......

this news really doesnt agree with me in any form  especially when last week it was nothing but praise for the leak of the old characters

also as i said last week trying to be a rebirth/return to form for MK why did they include a character from another video game series?

Posted by buft

Fuck mortal Kombat its off my radar again, lousy bastards make it impossible for you to get what you want 100% of the time.

Posted by ThaMilkMan

why would they do this? what sense does it make to even lock out ftalities...like really?

Taking a step back its a bit of a non-issue but...why even do this to have people upset...that's ALL this ever does. ugh.

Mortal Kombat can have all my money. People will eat up Scamco and Capcom bullshit addons so why not put money towards a game that matters?

Same.

Man I work at Best Buy so I could get those collectors editions pretty easily, but Reptile is my favorite character :-/

@freshym:  Personally, I don't mind new outfits or things of that nature being exclusive. That's just sort of window dressing. But when you're marketing your game as a return to form with new fatalities and tons of gore, locking out some of that content bums me out.

That being said, I also miss the days when new costumes were actually unlockables. Times are a-changin.

Who wants to bet that the Xbox 360 exclusive character is Blinx?

Unlike Mortal Kombat, there have been good Namco and Capcom games in the last 15 years.

Ill go for the amazon pre order just because i hate the reptilian look they've been giving reptile since MK4.

Retailer exclusives beyond skins = will never buy a new copy.  I'm probably the small minority but at least I won't feel robbed.

Posted by Milkman

This "retailer specific" stuff is getting really old. Seriously, locking people out from other fatalities is awful.

No, I'm right there with you.  This just went into the "buy it used" column for me.

Look people, the only way to stop this silly BS is to STOP PRE-ORDERING YOUR GAMES!
Posted by crusader8463

Fuck you. With this once announcement you single handily destroyed any and all want for me to buy this game. I refuse to be a part of this pre-order shit and don't buy games that do it. So again, fuck the cunt who keeps doing this to games.

Posted by TheMartino

This sucks.

Posted by Pibo47

I hate this DLC stuff, and i love the kratos thing. But i wanna know what the xbox is getting before i throw down a preorder.

Posted by Robo

Torn between Sub Zero and Scorpion.

FUCK retailer specific costumes and fatalities. FUCK preorder bonuses in general.
Why not just make all that shit unlockable in the game? It may sound like an inflated sense of entitlement, but I'm just not buying the justification for locking out content everyone would obviously enjoy.

I mean, I know it's a great little business deal with retailers, but it's kinda shitty towards the people actually paying for the product.

Frankly, I'm just sick of preordering shit for exclusive content anyway. It's retarded. Why can't I just buy the goddamned game when it comes out? I already wait til the day before to preorder simply out of spite. And choosing between stores for exclusive content is equally dumb.

OG costumes and fatalities sounds awesome...too bad 2/3 of them are locked up with this dumb marketing horse shit (unless, of course, you buy all 3).
