Mortal Kombat Video Turns Out To Be Fully Unofficial

It really is just a pitch for a movie.

No one is more authentic than Scorpion.
No one is more authentic than Scorpion.
You wouldn't think that unofficial projects would get participation from known actors like Jeri Ryan and Michael Jai White, but as it turns out, that's exactly what happened. But the Mortal Kombat "rebirth" video that got out yesterday is more than just some crazy fan project. It turns out the short film was part of a pitch that, according to a Crave Online interview with the guy who played Johnny Cage, was designed to get Warner interested in making a new movie, and isn't some insane tease for Mortal Kombat 9.

I had back-of-my-mind doubts at that point, thinking that maybe the guys working on the game got ahold of it and threw it out there just to get Mortal Kombat back into the front of everyone else's minds. But that, as I understand it, is not the case, either.

So carry on, I guess. There's nothing to see here! But considering the substantial waves that video created, I have to imagine anyone associated with the game or the continuing push to get a movie made has to be feeling pretty good about their chances. Clearly, people continue to have an affinity for the MK property, provided it's handled by skilled individuals.

But don't expect Baraka to be a plastic-surgeon-turned-serial-killer in whatever the next Mortal Kombat game ends up being.

Dude what? Professional actors, killer props, good cinematography, great camera work, a friggin helicopter, good FX, and a god damn choreographed fight scene that was pretty god damn amazing? Why would anyone put this much effort into a pitch? Make it 100 minutes long and put it in the cinema is what I say

I'm kinda disappointed now.  For the first time in about 15 years I was actually excited about Mortal Kombat.  Hopefully something good will come out of this trailer.

I wasn't fooled.  It had all the hallmarks of a fan-made spoof:  excellent but overbearing production values, cheesy faux-insightful screenwriting and acting, and really dark cinematography.  Though, it did look a hell lot better than any of the MK films.

@TadThuggish: I think the thing is that this took MK in an entire different direction and didn't make it come off as a video game movie. Even if this trailer was not tied to MK at all, I would have loved it for the sake of how awesome it looked.

I think what most people are excited about is that it is something fresh for the series in general. And I disagree about the whole idea that it wouldn't work more than that 7 minute clip. I think what they did with the characters in this clip alone was pretty cool/interesting. I think it could work if a whole movie was directed and choreographed the way this trailer was.

Unfortunately what is really going to happen is that they will end up making a new MK movie based on the buzz of this trailer, but it won't be like this trailer at all and just end up being a trash video game movie. But IF they did do the movie like this trailer, I think it could end up being a really cool film.

Bummer. I hope Ed Boon is taking note, because for the first time in what seems like forever, the entire internet was STOKED about something MK-related. And it wasn't even one of the games. Oh, the irony.

It did seem a little unofficial. The part about the babies being born with their eyes inside-out is an actual video on youtube. I saw it a long time age. Don't know if it's a real video, but I definitely saw that clip awhile ago.

Sucks. They need to keep that one guy's design for Sub-zero, though. And if they were thinking about re-booting the franchise, now seems like the best time to do it. Please... no more damn Konquest mode.

It's not odd for movies to start off as a mini concept piece like this that is very similar to the end movie, though it is odd that the public would see it.    I think Ed Boon had something to do with it's leaking, I think he realized the hype it would generate.

I was interested when I thought it was the lead up to a big E3 announcement.

Now that it's a primer for a hopeful movie? Pass.

But it wasn't a fan made spoof. It was made by the director to pitch to the movie studio in hopes of getting the full movie made. I'd say that qualifies much more than fan made.

I sure hope they do at least something cool with it. I don't really see how it'd make that good of a game, though.

Saddest news all month.  Does it have to be Warner because of rights?  That teaser seemed like a perfect fit for whatever company made Resident Evil, Ninja Assassin or Saw.

This is what I expected, you guys are all insane. That turning into a movie is the best thing that could happen. I don't want that to be Mortal Kombat the game, cmon. Give me digitized actors and a blend between MK2/3, thank you.

After reading that the teaser trailer wasn't real I had to see what all the noise was about. Hell even Twitter was exploding over this. And I must say that I'm highly impressed. Personally I stopped playing the Mortal Kombat series after MK II, however, I thought the first movie adaptation was done really well and true to it's source, with the exception of Annihilation. If another MK movie was in the works with a dark, moody, atmosphere shown in the trailer - I'd watch it. In fact I'm bummed that a movie like this isn't being made with how well produced the trailer was.

@Sanious:
It was neat, but its neatness only existed because of our love for MK.  If it was anything else it would be scoffed at, and if you don't then you are a cancer.  It was shock value.  It was cheesy (JACKSon).  It had character reveals that appeal to no one outside already-developed fighting game fans.  If it is a feature film, critics will have to see it.  Moms will have to see it.  Film-lovers will have to see it, art lovers will have to see it, not just people who can suffice with "Oh man, Reptile just ripped that dude's head off lolololol!"

I'm not saying the entire movie as a whole would be inherently bad, but you cannot tell if it is/will be a good movie simply from seven minutes of pandering.  To anyone who who is not familiar with MK, it may as well have been one of the most retarded things ever.  It takes a passion of sitting around with your friends playing some fighting games to generate any positive reaction.  So people saying "HELL YEAH I WANNA SEE THIS MOVIE" don't actually want to see a good movie, they just want to see more MK, something that could be applied to their lives in a variety of ways, and not another atrocious Hollywood fiasco that only sullies peoples' opinions on video game writing even moreso.

Huh, I had no idea that directors would need to pitch movies visually, rather than simply with a screenplay and line readings.  This practice is usually relegated towards television pilots.

@TadThuggish: Actually, even if it wasn't based on a game franchise I loved, I'm going to guess I'd want to see it anyway. I really wanted to see Death Race because it looked like the same brand of quality B-Grade cheese, and I freakin' loved that film. I'm not saying that my love of that kind of project is universal, but at the same time I am saying that you're making generalisations that may not be true.

Hopefully this pitch turns into a real movie and they go forward with it. Otherwise it seems like it was a waste of a video story that seems to have some potential.

I would have liked this to at least be a teaser for something down the road, but it might bring enough attention to Mortal Kombat as a whole to get some talks going.

This cheers me somewhat, because it's been getting a pretty damn big reaction, so maybe Warner will actually go ahead with it "District 9"-style.

Of course it was cheesy, it is based on a video game. No matter what you do a transition from a video game to film will always come off cheesy one way or another. That is expected, it's just a matter if it is done way too much or not.

Not saying it will definitely be a good movie from a 7 minute trailer, but on the same token you can't say it will be an awful film because of it. I'm saying there is a possibility that it would be good if it was followed through more.

And I really wouldn't say that this is shock value. If you consider this shock value, I wouldn't think you have watched any rated R movies in your life.

that will be the best MK movie EVER.

Does nobody else wonder why a fan-made Mortal Kombat Rebirth trailer would release almost exactly a week before E3?

I'm sorry Jeri Ryan, but I call bullshit. Even if this doesn't have to do with a new Mortal Kombat game, the timing is too perfect to not have something else planned out for E3.

I'm SO glad that this isn't the new direction for the game. I have a special love for the current MK mythology, Quan Chi and all. I know it might be an unpopular opinion, but I stand by it.

To be honest, the trailer was a little too Saw inspired for my tastes, although it was definitely an unexpected direction. I guess all this proves is that video game culture continues to be a bit odd!

Hopefully they'll make it happen. I don't want to see them eliminate the supernatural side of MK, though, but they could certainly minimize it. I really loved the concept they had with Reptile.
