Mr. Roper is Cryptic

Cryptic Studios, the folks behind the upcoming Champions Online, have brought on veteran game maker Bill Roper in the role of Design Director for the upcoming Champions game. The California-based company is also working on the upcoming Star Trek MMO.

Roper's last gig was co-founder of Flagship Studios, the company that brought you Hellgate: London. In related news, the current rights holders for Hellgate, HanbitSoft, claim that they're going to release a downloadable expansion for the game. Considering Namco's recent announcement that the servers for Hellgate were going to close down in February, this sounds... uh... weird. Perhaps HanbitSoft has a plan in place to rescue the servers from extinction?

I hope Hellgate doesn't die yet. That game was surprisingly solid for what it was and the team size.
