Namco Bandai’s Smash Bros., 3DS XL And Tons More Nintendo News

Because Nintendo’s press conference was so action packed, this had to wait.

No Caption Provided

Apparently Nintendo’s semi-regular Nintendo Direct events are where fans should wait for exciting news, as tonight’s brought plenty to get everybody talking.

We have the first details on the next Smash Bros., a collaboration between Project Sora (Kid Icarus:Uprising) and, uh, Namco Bandai. Of course, the game is being overseen by the always present Masahiro Sakurai. Due to the Namco Bandai collaboration, apparently the game isn’t years off.

Also, Nintendo confirmed the rumored re-design 3DS (something I’d shot down on the podcast, but looks like I’m wrong on that one), now called the 3DS XL. The machine sports a 90% larger screen, a 4GB memory card, improved battery life, and there won’t be an AC adaptor in the box because...cost savings? The machine will be available on August 19 for $200.

Otherwise? Let’s run down the list.

The reason Nintendo didn't show this stuff at E3 was because FUCK E3 CAN DIE THAT'S WHY! Think about it. They have to share headline space on sites with the other companies for duration of the show which what they don't want. They also have to put on a stage show for the press. The same press who have been singing Nintendo's doom since before the original DS was ever released.

AC adapter will come with the US version.

I'm not surprised that so many commenters are upset by the 3DS XL's lack of an AC adapter; that's what stood out to me as well. I can understand that it's really important for them to hit the sub-$200 price point, but removing the power adapter is not the way to do that. I don't know if Japan is a different case or not, but how many parents in Europe are going to buy this for their kids without realizing that it doesn't contain a power cord? This is a completely baffling decision by Nintendo. They really come across as having zero idea what they're doing.

Also, I thought reps from Nintendo have said previously that they don't believe in DLC. The DLC stages for NSMB2 clearly seem like throwaway challenge levels, but it's still odd that they're not going to be included with the rest of the game.

Amazon did the same thing with the Kindle, got my girlfriend one for christmas and then had to buy a charger seperately because it only came with a USB. It must cut the cost as the device dropped to below £100 here in the UK.

Im not fussed about a bigger 3DS but my girlfriend will love it, she has a DSi XL and didnt want to get the 3DS because it was too small, though i guess it will be me buying it for her lol

There are plenty of decent games out and in the pipeline for the 3DS right now. If people are still all pitchforks and torches over the 3DS then you're either not paying attention to them or you're too difficult to please.

If someone is bitching about 3DS lack of games then showing them Vita's release schedule would probably kill them.

Great. It's probably a great business decision for them to leave off the second analog stick. It seems that great business decisions are all that Nintendo is good for anymore. Heaven forbid they confuse grandma or a five year old with a second analog stick.

Nintendo USA says that the AC adapter is in the package for the US. That was only for Japan that no AC adapter was in the package.

Good to know! I had thought the lack of an AC adapter had carried over the the U.S. side of things. The decision to not package an adapter in with the system seemed rather silly.

Everyone should stop dreaming about the 3DS. Nintendo does this: Their designs for their consoles, while seemingly weird sometimes, forces them to be innovative. It did with the DS. It sort of backfired, but still kinda worked out with the Wii. Its gonna be the same for the 3DS. The Circle Pad Pro was anomaly which I will never understand, but hey, if you wanna play Resident Evil: Revelations with that, it works, I guess.

3DS is actually a very compelling device in my eyes now, more so than the Vita and the Wii U, both of which I was actually considering picking up this Holiday.

In terms of the games that are already out:

Super Mario 3D Land

Ocarina of Time 3D

Starfox 64

Mario Kart 7

Kid Icarus: Uprising

And games coming out:

Luigi's Mansion

Paper Mario

Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion

New Super Mario Bros 2

And to an extent, Mirror of Fate.

With Super Smash Bros on its way,

The 3DS line up looks fantastic in my opinion. With the XL coming out, I might just grab it end of the year.

Should have posted that 11 minute Dragon Quest X trailer from the japanese Nintendo Direct conference. Game looks so amazing. I suspect when it comes out in english it won't have the monthly fees like Japan does, but even if it does I'll gladly pay them for this game. Only time I'm ever paying for an online RPG

it's now 3.5 to 6.5 hours for 3DS games (5-8 for DS games)

yes it will, you seem to have missed that we (EU) had our own Nintendo Direct with Satoru Shibata this morning confirming Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem for early 2013.

I'll buy a 3DS XL for games like Theatrhythm and Shin Megami Tensei IV.

Those two little bumps to protect the top screen when it's closed really should have been on the first edition of the 3DS.

Still would have been awesome at E3 if they announced a Professor Layton for the WiiU, seems a perfect fit for that console or even just release a collection of the DS games for it.

not including the second circle pad is a good move. Segmenting your player base is dangerous, and really confusing for developers. Keep the experiences based around the touch screen and 3D, not a second analog stick.

Doubtful. It was always an optional accessory. There aren't any games on the horizon that would utilize it.

Just like the original DS revisions, this is just an alternative to the 3DS, not a replacement.

1. It would be amusing to see a Quick Look of someone attempting to play Kid Icarus with the 3DS XL propped up on that stand.

2. So anyone who wants to play the games that have the optional second analog stick are out of luck? Wouldn't devs just completely stop developing for a second analog if it's only available as an add-on for a first-gen 3DS model?

I'm excited that Namco-Bandai has assembled a dream team to do the development for Smash Next. I mean, first off, new blood - especially when it's talented - is always a good thing. Look how refreshed Halo is now that Bungie has moved on and 343 are taking it on. While I'm sure Nintendo will make sure this new game plays like Smash Bros, I'm still excited that new developers are tackling it. And Namco has experience making games for HD consoles, with advanced lighting, complex shaders and detailed, high poly character sculpts. Maybe now it will look better than a higher-res Wii game, hopefully - unlike all other Wii U games Nintendo has been working on. And here's hoping they bring SOMETHING fresh to the table. The core gameplay from Smash 64, Melee and Brawl has already been iterated to perfection - it just depends on who you ask which one is perfect.

I'm also excited to see a larger developer handle the actual development. Sora is too small and there's no way they could get these games done in a timely fashion by themselves. But Namco's super team here? They'll be getting this done much faster than if HAL was working on it; of this I am certain.

Excited for Smash now.

Since it seems that the best use of 3D is in games that are played on a 2D plane (side-scrollers) with 3D added for depth the lack of a second stick is kind of meaningless.

I don't think adding the second analog stick would have been a good idea. Either it A: would have been a built-in control that never would have gotten used, or B: it would have become a staple in most games that came out, meaning that previous 3DS owners would be fuuuuucked.
